    Nice one, that did the trick on my Volvo V40 year 2003 model, which has the exact shame shifter knob. Thank you!

    Terrific video, just did the install and I am returning the OEM gear shift that just arrived. The instruction on the pin being just slightly too long was so helpful. Thanks so much!

      Hi C P, Thank you for your kind comment! I’m glad you found the bit about the pin being too long helpful. Apparently I’m not the only one who had that problem. By the way, one person commented that I placed the spring leg slightly off from original position. I think they might be right but I have never had any problem with it. Original spring position pulls the button back into the knob before knob is reinstalled. Shift release pin in lever pushes button back out when knob is reinstalled. The way I did it the button is out even when knob is removed from shift lever.

    You are a genius! You saved me a ton by creating this video. The furniture wax actually solved my locking of my shifter knob. Thank you, thank you. Thank you. My 2000 Volvo has been a great car the last 21 years needing very little servicing. BUT, when it does my local dealer rakes me through the coals, replaced my whole electronic system 2 years ago because the key in the ignition wasn't recognizing the key (after 3 key replacements the previous 7 yrs). Soooo, $2400 later and 2 yrs passing it is starting to not recognize my key again! Has anyone else had this problem with their 2000 V70?

      Glad you found the video helpful! Did the dealership replace the sensor ring around the keyhole? I haven’t had to replace mine but have seen some discussion about it. The 2000 v70 keys have a chip (like a super tiny original fit bit) embedded in the hard plastic. My lock mechanism is so worn I can pull the key out with the engine running. When I do it sometimes throws a trouble code that key was not sensed. Any chance you have a keychain with a lot of stuff hanging down? Could it be getting pulled away from the sensor ring? Maybe you could put a mark on the key so you will know which way it’s pointing. Then check to see if the problem happens when the key is inserted one one way vs the other? I have my key separate these days just on a thin rope so it doesn’t have hanging weight pulling it. Hope you can solve the problem without a lot of expense!

    It is a thousand easier to remove if you pull the shifter down to lowest gear or point and then pull !

    Instead of guiding people into cutting the plastic with an exacto knife which weakens the points, have them grind the metal shaft a little at one end so that it'll fit better into the aftermarket slot. Then have them spray all moving parts with dry lube at installation

    • @fiveable
      @fiveable  3 роки тому +1

      Either way works. The amount of material removed was minimal and basically excess from a sloppy molding along the edges. I doubt it is any weaker. Dry lube is a good point. That would have made it easier.

    I need to replace the bulb by the shifter to see what gear you're in at night time

    • @fiveable
      @fiveable  3 роки тому +3

      You need to remove the top plastic trim of the center console to get to it. It has been a while since I did mine. There are a few screws you need to remove. You may need to pull out an ash tray or small cover in the center box to get to them.

    The button is broken and I can't move the gear shift back, can it be pulled out in Park?

    • @fiveable
      @fiveable  Рік тому

      Yes, you should be able to pull it off in Park. I repositioned it so I could get better leverage when pulling it off.

    Are you sure the short part of the spring is seated correctly? It should be at the lower side of the pin instead of above the pin.

    • @fiveable
      @fiveable  3 роки тому +2

      Not sure, my original spring was missing but I think you are right. I looked up some other videos and they definitely show the hooked part of the spring in a different spot. I also found some images of new Volvo replacement knobs and it looks like the spring tension pulls the button into the handle instead pushing it out. Fortunately I drive that car daily and haven’t had a single issue with the shifter the way I assembled it in the video. I have a 99 S70 I can pull the knob off and disassemble for reference. Thanks!

      @@fiveable I just did my button with an MTC part like yours and I put the long part of the spring between the notch on the new part just like you did because it just looks right. What else would the notch be for? I also had to trim my plastic because the pin didnt fit but I think a better idea would have been to file one of the metal pin ends to make it a hair shorter, which I ended up doing so as not to stress the plastic. Good video.

    • @fiveable
      @fiveable  3 роки тому

      Hi Dale, I’m glad you liked the video. Thank you for your comment! It sounds like almost all, if not all, the MTC buttons are a little off. As for the spring location, I do think the OEM position is a little different. After someone commented that it goes elsewhere, I did some research and found that the button springs in toward the pressed in position. Perhaps this is to make it easier to shift. The way I did it makes the button spring out away from pressed in. Actually I prefer it the way I did it in my video because it makes it a little harder to accidentally shift. The extra tension isn’t a problem for me. Besides adding a little spring assistance to someone who may not have strong hands, the only other advantage of doing it the other way might be that the button pulling in would be pressing on the white release shaft that sticks up and prevent it from rattling.

    When you put the car in drive and to left what does that do

    • @fiveable
      @fiveable  3 роки тому

      I put it in drive, with hand brake on, just so I can get a good angle so I can pull hard straight up. It isn’t necessary to do it if you can pull the knob off from the park position.

    How would you reset the message on the dashboard that says: "Service Shifter" after you replace the part?

    • @fiveable
      @fiveable  3 роки тому +1

      The shifter knob/button doesn’t throw any codes on my Volvo so no need to reset anything after replacing the button. Maybe you have a different problem. Does your car have any symptoms you can describe?

      The shifter on my 2000 v70 is different. Tried looking up 2005. Could be a wire connector in the shifter area was pulled loose a little and needs to get pushed back in. Do the lights for the gear indicator still come on?
