    Maybe a note in each mailbox thanking Richard and asking for each person to contibute. Our camp is on a private road. We started a road maintenance association, it has worked out well. At the end of summer we have a cookout. It keeps us connected.

    Might be worthwhile to ask him if he'll teach you how to run the tractor and do the section between your two houses so that you can take care of it if he gets sick in addition to saving him a lot of personal time. I'd take him a twelve pack of his favorite drink also even if it's just a soda 👍 Mom always taught me to appreciate anyone who does something for you even if you were paying them to do it and people would be surprised how much it counts to whoever is doing the work for you.

      We had a neighbor in Minnesota, he always got up early every Saturday morning and would kind of pester people, walking house to house if he spotted you outside he'd walk over holding his coffee cup.
      I told dad, your mechanical (like me) he works all week to, but you can do things he can't. Engage him he's lonely. Dad found out he had a bad back but was late 30's early 40's too. Snow came, dad would shovel our house, his and others that had health issues, till I got old enough he'd let me help. But when the snow was over 6' and I was 5'5" at 11 and dad was 5'8". We started getting creative. Then one day we heard this horrible noise outside. Here was our neighbor, he'd bought a wide fancydancy snowblower, wearing cleats so he wouldn't slip, cleaned OUR driveway. Then taught dad and I how to use it.
      I think when I graduated High School and moved back to MO for college, I missed that snowblower the most on winter mornings. LOL

    that looks so much like where i live, you are blessed to have such a man to help the neighbors,we are the only ones that live up here because my neighbors passed away,we could not get anyone to put down gravel over time, when i first moved here i would buy the gravel and get someone to spread it for me. People got older and they were not able to do the job. i finally saved 10,000 dollars and paid to get it blacktopped, it took a big bite out of my savings, but the driveway was washing away. it is fine now that me and my husband don't have to continue trying to fill the pot holes,so i know what you are going through, you are so blessed to have someone to help you and your neighbors, everyone on that road should try to put in some money to help if they can, we could not get the county to help,people who worked for the county would pass us and laugh

    Exactly how it gets done in west and central Texas. Folks pitch in, pool their equipment and materials and get things taken care of. Neighbor helping neighbor. Harvesting, planting, or irrigating hay and crops if a farmer is ill/hurt and can't do it when it needs doing. Taking care of predators and helping replace big losses of stock if need be. Sharing windfalls. That's how I was raised and how I saw my grand parents and parents do. I taught my kids to do the same. Hope that lesson took.

      Southern Missouri/Northern Arkansas (Ozark Mtns), and North Eastern Minnesota 15 miles from Canada. You get snippy with neighbors there, they'll leave your ass in a ditch in 40 below with wind chill making it much worse, after ensuring the kids and wife aren't with you. Sure becomes a "lightbulb" moment for lots of folks. LOL

    Ed if you get some stubborn potholes they just keep coming back you can take some Portland cement and sprinkle it on the bank run gravel as you fill the pothole and then a final sprinkling on top preferably when the gravel slightly moist like it is in the video or right before very light rain or if you have some old bags or concrete mix or mortar mix that are starting to get lumpy just put it on a little heavier as long as it's not a solid block an old-timer showed me that probably 25 years ago to keep the gravel in the road when you got a dig 2 repair utilities in the road and you're not going to blacktop that spot right away

    My family maintained a minimum maintenance road years ago. It literally had a sign on it with my family’s name; it was called Mortenson Road. My great uncles maintained the road. • @GrandCanyonRVResort
    @GrandCanyonRVResort Рік тому

    Sounds like you have a nice neighbor. I have a similar situation with a property located on a private road with public access. The county does not maintain the road so if I wanted to improve the road myself, would still require a permit from the county. Without a permit, I am opening myself up to potential liability with the other neighbors. If that road is not improved the correct way, without proper drainage, etc., a neighbor could sue me. Sometimes being kind can come back to bite us.

    Having been a dump truck driver for yrs that type of rock is called dga ( dense grade aggregate ) it's for a base that needs rolled, traffic will do that for you but with rain 1/3 to 1/2 will wash away depends on how hard the rain is. That can have a chip and sill ( sprayed tar covered with fine pea sized rock ) put over that, That will withstand the rain better.

    • @ICU8-12
      @ICU8-12 5 років тому +1

      rv sorce....I was kinda wondering if they were using the right sized gravel. Would the tractor be able to spray the tar? If nobody on the street has the equipment to spray tar should they just use the pea sized gravel instead of the dga?

    • @rvsorce7196
      @rvsorce7196 5 років тому +2

      @@ICU8-12 They have a trailer that heats the tar and pumps it to a tube that has spray nozzles on it, Once the tar is down a dump truck can then spread the pea size gravel very thinly. The pile shown in video if pea seize and spread right would almost go a 1/2 mile. As far as using the pea gravel over dga it could be spread on top to lessen the run off by covering and holding the sand in the dga but either way it should be rolled.

    Snow removal from the road in the winter is something that needs to be looked after too. Everyone should pitch in for common use things. However it comes down to the old 'tragedy of the commons' problem. Since no one 'owns' the road, no one is responsible for its upkeep.

    Ed, are you guys using "road base gravel"? If not, you may want to use that next year. Road base is a mixture of sizes and it locks together when it gets tamped down real nice, unlike regular gravel.
