Did you use a clear coat? Also did you take off the mid cowl or just leave everything attached? I have this motor but 1995 just had to replace the lower unit and the lower unit is white and the rest of the motor is black so I’m wanting to paint everything.
For a mismatch lower I’d recommend stripping down to metal and then Primer, paint, clear coat. My method really only works for original parts and pain. Since everything was the same color it matched and hid a lot of my imperfections or missed spots. Where as in your they will show a lot easier! Here for mine I wet sanded and did a few passes with the rattle can and that was it
It came out good good job my lower gearcase i sand with 220 then 320 and use zinc primer about 3 coats then wet sand light with 400 and paint and use 2k clear it works good and still looks good in the salt I used a spray wax after 3 months in the sun and is still glossy
ThefatItalian66 X tell me about it...I just repowered this boat with a used 90 Etec! I got tired of fighting so many electrical issues I could never pin point. Mechanically the engine was sound!
Farr Outdoors that’s too bad about your motor I’m just learning about steering set ups with the tilt tube I currently have a really nice I/o mercuiser 3.5 4cly it was My fathers on a deep V 20ft wellcraft its very simple and dependable my dad hates 2 strokes because when he was in the 70s they always died on you and it’s not like today with the technology and parts available
@@jimcatx3090 I hear ya. the new etec 2 strokes are awesome! I love mine! just put up a quick review and another video of it you should check out! subscribe for when I post more
Where would u find the stickers? I have a 1994 johnson 90 but it says diehard on the current decals the rest is the same seems like and mine is white instead of black. Thanks
Chris Martin just google “Johnson Outboard stickers” and decal websites will pop up. These were actually the original ones from the factory when I painted the motor!
And it would last even longer if I did a clear coat to...but that wasn’t the point of this project. I wanted to kept this as quick, cheap and easy as possible. After a over a year it still looks pretty damn good!
u didnt do dry sanding? I wanna do the same thing, so i should do it in this order? 1. wash 2. dry sanding 200 grit 3 use primer 4 wet sanding 600 grit. 5. paint. is that about right?

@@kddcc wow those are in really good shape mine are starting to peel. I think the DieHard sticker was put on by a previous owner.
It would last a lot longer if you'd primed it first, .... $47.

6 hours I could of painted your house too
u didnt do dry sanding?
I wanna do the same thing, so i should do it in this order?
1. wash
2. dry sanding 200 grit
3 use primer
4 wet sanding 600 grit.
5. paint.
is that about right?
Jaap Tang I washed it several times then wet sanded everything I could
Not sure about using 200 grit...seems a little coarse to me. I used 600 grit
dalton farr no dry sanding?
Dalton Farr looks like it
How many cans did u need?
Jaap Tang I used 1 & 1/2 cans! Still have a half sitting my truck to touch up anything that chips
Its ok to just paint it you dont got to take it apart
