  • On January 30, 1972, in the Northern Irish town of Derry, a peaceful protest march led by civil rights activist Ivan Cooper (James Nesbitt) turned into a slaughter. British soldiers suddenly opened fire on the defenceless crowd, killing 13 people and wounding 14 more. Shot as if a documentary, this film follows Ivan throughout the day as it chronicles the events leading up to the horrific incident and the bloodied, confused aftermath that followed.

With all love to my English friends, that scene from 1:08:36 onwards where the soldiers are shouting like animals and then just UNLOAD into a crowd of scared, fleeing civilians sums up everything that Irish people find terrifying about the British Army.

Absolutely I am ashamed to call myself British. It wouldn't shock me if the whole of Eire is still living in trauma and fear.
      Sorry is a pathetic world.

Well its nothing compared to what they did in retaliation to Collins during the war of independence, literally driving an armoured vehicle into a football match and machine gunning women and children. Watch the film Michael Collins, it depicts the carnage perfectly.

I'm an American of both Irish and English ancestry; what a senseless tragedy, as all of the deaths during The Troubles were. It is so often the innocent that pay the highest price in war, regardless of which side is right or wrong. So terribly sad and needless. RIP to all that were lost.

yup, I was a Sailor stationed in Derry during the Troubles. Met my Wife there. Never got into as many fights in my short, wild Year there as in my entire 66-year existence. It was like I had a bounty placed on my head, EVERYBODY wanted a piece, from The Red cap Paras who used to tease us about getting our butts kicked in Vietnam, we would
hilariously goad them that too bad that we were THERE, watching the Irish kick theirs and a Donny-Brook would ensue! I was getting swung on from everyone to the Seabees Golden gloves boxer and his mates, a Raging Crazy Cajun, and the Irish Yobs. The Army remote detonated my VW bug, thinking my new Converse shoebox in the back floorboard was a disguised plastic explosive! The Army explained to me they received an anonymous "tip"...kinda like the belated apology the Americans got from the IRA when they blew up our remote repeater generator building that was at the foot of the Dungiven Mountain Navy Radio transmitter site. They thought it was a Secret British base, and there were rumors it was a Cold War Secret Nuclear Storage facility and my favorite, a Secret Nuclear Missile Boomer base underneath the Mountain!
but there was one Particular Nasty incident when I started arguing with a SAS Soldier and he took offence, put his submachine gun in my jaw, and PROMISED he would blow my jaw off if I even breathed one word! SO far, he has been the only One to Shut me up in 66 yrs or so my wife says! ;)

Seriously? When has that attitude ever achieved anything but revenge attacks and a continual cycle of violence?
German civilians didn't demand the surrender of their government after 600,000 of them died under allied bombing raids any more than Londoners refused to give up after the Blitz.

The Troubles are historically from the late 60's to '98. This is '72. In the grand scheme this WAS 'at the beginning' and in fact was a huge catalyst to the following decades of violence.
Maybe soldiers shouldn't gun down unarmed protestors, many who were still in their teens? Maybe the powers behind them could own up to mistakes when they happen instead of lying and dragging out justice for decades? Maybe you should get a clue?

The people are in essence whites. The religions of Protestant and Catholic going at it with blood on each others hand. Such wonderful chaps!. So confusing folks. Endless killings all due to ignorance and stupidity. I guess you can say one side wants to be with Ireland? Ah? The other side wants to be with the UK? I thought the Arabs and Israelis were bad but you guys took it to another level of ignorance and stupidity and in the end you all talk the same language with slight differences. Please dont tell me your languages are different. Last time I checked my landlord from Ireland spoke good English. Likewise my friend or bloke we played football from London spoke good English too! They both wanted tea and drink good beer. The only difference once again was one was Protestant and the other Catholic. Not that much difference if you compare the Jews to the Arabs which is way different. In the end sad, sad, sad folks killing each other. Sad indeed!

And there, writ large, is your fundamental ignorance of the issue...it was never a war about religion....the two communities were Republican and Unionist and their religious affiliation was secondary...Ivan Cooper himself was a Protestant as were a large number of the founders of Irish republicanism....
The troubles in Northern Ireland were caused by widespread discrimination against Republicans where their religious affiliation would almost certainly class them as non Unionist/Loyalist...this is what the Civil Rights Movement marched for in the late 60's.....once the Republicans (invariably of a Catholic persuasion) were alienated and started to be burned out of Belfast and Derry in the pogroms of 1969, the old IRA who defeated the Brits in the War of Independence but lost out through the Irish Civil War and the loss of the 6 Counties to the UK, were reanimated. This i the cause of "The Troubles". SO before you accuse people of taking ignorance to another level, I suggest you educate yourself.

British army is considered one of the most professional and disciplined in the world..and it difficult to think about what s happened..but it is possible to do this kind of things..even you are very well trained.the situation in ulster...during those years was very bad...the terrorists of IRA ..in many cases..(but not alway) were supported by a part of the catholic population...even part of the catholics was tried to find a political..diplomatic solution...brits they were there also for separate protestant and catholics...and in my opinion they had the rights to do this..because it was part of the U.K..and police forces were not enough strong for controll the public order..it was a civil war...!!..that sunday there was a demonstration..probably authorized..a peacefully demonstration..but some groups of violents they were inside the manifestation..and they start to lunch stones against the soldiers and policemen...who answered in the right way..using gas and water....also the soldiers could make fire in the air...and surely the demonstrators were escaping away...it is crazy ..to shoot civilian who are without guns...at least in europe..by an occidental army!.. they were not terrorists!!!..army guys they were not on danger!!....it s crazy what s happened that sunday...but it s possible: before to be soldier we are human beings..and in many cases people of the "right "side...who has the"right"uniform...do wrong things!..it happened also during second ww...german soldiers (who represented the "bad" side...) protected civilians ....and allied soldiers or partisans did terrible things!!!...i think right and wrong are never on only one side.

Northern Ireland is not a diverse place. And it was even less diverse at the time. This is a docudrama which tries to accurately describe the killings on Bloody Sunday from a perspective shown as accurately as possible.
