    I was 5 months in September of 1969. My first memory of the Oilers was those silverish helmets.

      These NFL Films programs have lots of good film footage, but are nothing but sales propaganda for the league. Rarely do they reveal anything critical about the coaching or play of the teams. I was fascinated by them as an adolescent, but realized they were a lot of bullshit by the time I became an adult.

    I live in Tennessee in Titans Country so it is nice to see the Titans roots the Houston Oilers.The 1969 Oilers uniforms are far better than the current Titans uniforms and Coach Wally Lemm is the last Oilers-Titans coach to win a League Championship in 1961.The 1969 Oilers did make the playoffs at 6-6-2 but were routed 56-7 at Oakland after falling 28-0 in the 1st quarter.I noticed that disaster was not mentioned in this highlight film.

      The Oilers had these unis for about five years and not many people remember them. But they ARE great.

      Strangely, this film focused on only one specific game -- the monsoon at Kansas City. They let you know the Chiefs won, but they don't mention the final score -- 24-0. The Oilers had more turnovers in tha game (9) than first downs (7). Then again, the 1969 Oilers had no memorable wins -- all 6 wins and both ties came against teams with losing records. The Oilers had a worse record than the Chargers (8-6), but the 1969 AFL rules provided that both second-place teams made the playoffs, rather than the two teams with the best records after the division winners. So the Oilers made the playoff and got massacred by the Raiders (who'd needed a late TD bomb to beat Houston 21-17 in the season opener in Oakland).

      @@PreFabInternationalCine Crazy thing is my first memory of the Oilers is probably 1970 or 71. But definitely the silver helmet. I live in Cleveland so I saw them play the Browns twice a year, and the Bengals and Steelers were also televised a lot. I was only 2 in 71. Crazy thing is the Oilers became my favorite team in 1978.

      Campbellites were people who split the Church of Christ into two denominations back in the 19th.century, led by a guy named Campbell.

      @@johnmanier7968, that is why KANSAS CITY which was second in the AFL WEST that season is not retroactively listed as a WILD CARD. That finish is not considered a WILD CARD team's spot because WILD CARDS are teams whose finished spot is not guaranteed before the season as a playoff qualifier. It is almost as if the Chiefs were treated like a division champ, except they could only host the AFL EAST's second place Oilers in the playoffs, something that did not happen. The WILD CARD concept by the way was first pushed by the late, great DON SHULA after his 11-1-2 '67 COLTS failed to make the playoffs despite an identical record with the RAMS who won the NFL WEST's COASTAL DIVISION in a point-differential tiebreak of their two regular season meetings= which back then was tiebreak one, not head to head results and then on to a second tiebreak level.
      When the NFL decided to have three divisions in each conference in '70, the WILD CARD was born.
      Thanks Coach Shula, R.I.P.

    Look at those oldschool goalposts. Not just at the goal line, but how they aren't very tall.

    • @Stacie45
      @Stacie45 4 роки тому +1

      The first extension of the uprights on the goal posts came as a result of a playoff game between the Colts and Packers in 1965. The Packers won by 3 points, and they had a field goal called good that sailed high above the top of the goal post. On the replay it was easy to see it was wide and no good. The taller goal posts became known as "Baltimore extensions."

      @robertsprouse9282 4 роки тому

      @@Stacie45, yep and with the ability to make metal uprights more stable, the uprights will continue to grow to make it easier on the officials.
      The same thing as '65 benefitted the Pack in 1962's NFL TITLEGAME vs. the GIANTS in YANKEE STADIUM. JERRY KRAMER said he missed a field goal called good. The PACK won 16-7 over NEW YORK. KRAMER's FG made it 13-7.. Whereas, in the NFL WEST tiebreak playoff game of'65, the Pack had to hit that field goal to send the game eventually into overtime over SHULA's COLTS playing with runner TOM MATTE instead of regular injured qbs Unitas and Cuozzo= first wristband ever full of plays used.
      GBAY won on a field goal in o-time. They then beat CLEVELAND there, 23-12 for the last non-SUPER BOWL season's NFL title, the first of three NFLs in a row by the PACK.

      They did. As I recall Houston was well known for having some very big men on the Defensive line......and it was exciting to see the durable Elvin Bethea on this film while so young!
      Once Coach Phillips came in 1975, and then with a good offensive line, then Campbell, you really saw Dante could do great things.
      I grew up a Steelers fan, but I'll tell anyone Pastorini was very underrated. A great arm, and INCREDIBLY TOUGH. Dante missed 5 games......in 9 YEARS.... !
