      Hello Irena,
I was pleasantly surprised to read you planted your rose near a cherry tree and that it was climbing it. I have never heard of anyone else using a tree as a trellis.
In the spring of 2019 I planted 4 Don Juan climbers in between 3 poplar trees. You may know that the trees are tall and straight and the branches on them don’t begin near the ground, however my son built the loveliest battlefield rail fences to connect the trees and extending just beyond the two outer trees.
It was my first experience with Don Juan climbers. I purchased them from Heirloom Roses and I am so happy with them. They came well rooted and healthy and from the moment I put them in the ground, they took off. I planted them in late April and by the first week of June all 4 had blooms. By the end of the first season they had nearly tripled in size and at the end of their 3rd season they are almost 6ft high and spreading so nicely. The deep velvety red is so gorgeous against the gray railing and they are climbing the trees very well. The overall effect is so pleasing. The trees look like 3 stately columns supporting the fences. The overall effect is more than I could hope for.
I love dogwoods and I have some wild ones growing, but none that could support a rose . I bet yours is beautiful.
I have a large property that I have put a lot of effort into naturalizing. I have lots of roses planted where they get lots of sun, but I have been looking for a nice rose that I could plant on a slope that only receives about 5 hours of morning sun and the rest of the day it’s in light to dappled shade. I was wondering if the Himalayan Musk rose might grow on that slope. What do you think? I also heard that it is prone to black spot and fungus. Does your rose give you any problems with diseases? I would love your thoughts.
