I use a 30in Toro Timemaster in my business. Once or twice a week on specific yards. It is a heavy belt-driven mower, and I wouldn't recommend it for uneven terrain as it doesn't pull uphill very well. On large flat lawns, it is a great workhorse and gets the job done quickly. I had it over a year, and very easy to replace belts and cables. Blade sharpening is the same as you do with the bigger mowers, removing blades from spindles with wench and spanner. No need to have a shop do any of that. Engine starts up and runs very well. It's a keeper for me. No oil filter, so regular oil changes are important.
3:18 I agree, the Toro 22in. is a great self-propelled mower which can take the punishment of multiple lawns in a business. Cabling and belt is easy to change out.
7:25 I do larger, corner lots and a small mower just doesn't cut it. I've had a 32in Ferris Hydrocut, but it wasn't getting reliable operation long term. If you going for 36in or 48in mowers, I'd recommend Exmark or Scag commercial models. They are super easy to maintain mechanically and have solid frames built to last.
Trailers are mandatory in this business, but you should also have the capacity to load all your mowers on the bed of your truck. BTW a Scag 48" WB mower can just barely fit on the back of a bed of a Ford f150 standard long bed. You get about 1/2in clearance between the right and left fender wells, but it will fit and you can load and unload with DIY wooden planks.
9:48 Yeah, I'm with you on WB(walk behind mowers). Landscapers that sit and ride all day are just lazy bones. It's also more stress on engine/transmission to pull an extra +150lbs. of weight when you can be off that mower and walk as you cut. This is not a job for the weakling, only the strong survive out there in +100 deg. F. temps and 50% humidity.
Tip: consider getting into irrigation maintenance, but it can be intensely time-consuming and labor intensive. I've had 9yrs of commercial & residential irrigation experience in addition to the landscaping. You can save the customer on +$50 service calls from an irrigation company if you can do the pipe, valve and sprinkler repairs while you are on site and mowing the same day. This is not rocket science but you should stay away from commercial irrigation without an expert crew. Wire tracker / valve locator is a good investment to find lost&buried valves that the typical home owner has no clue on where to locate. You can't mow or fertilize a nice yard if the st. aug. grass is not growing and it's dying from lack of irrigation. You'll need to spot the difference between a bad valve diaphragm and a bad 24vac solenoid! How to program timers and check zones. Lots of job specific knowledge that's unrelated to mowing yards.

If you are ever looking to upgrade, the hustler trimstar 36in is great. Its a walk behind that is very heavy duty. The machine goes in everywhere and the h-bar steering is great.

I have used the same residential 21” honda mower for 7 years and the only problem it has ever had was the self propel went out. I only do it as a side hustle, but still, 7 years speaks to amazing quality. I have changed the oil 4 times. In 7 years. Love that mower. Looking for a 30” now though!

Anybody that says walking is putting miles on your body obviously don't like walking. I work for a corporation and whenever I'm on the clock I always choose to use the weedeater while the other guys fight over who's going to use the seat down mower. Its always best to walk then to seat when it comes to being physically fit. Plus the heart will thank you for it.

I worked for a professional landscaping company where the majority of the crew leaders would sit on their butts mowing all day but couldn’t push a mower for two accounts yet the 60 year old foreman could push a mower and weed wack all day. His secret, cause we talked about it often, was not getting use to not pushing a mower. He was better shape than most of the crew leads lol 😂

I have the cub cadet 28” and I love it... I use it commercially and it’s held well. I’d estimate around 380 hours by the end of this year (that’s be 18 months of use.). Only needs a small tune up, but it’s been amazing. Only price I broke was the plastic handle bar for the self propulsion. And much cheaper... after tax I think it was $875 from Home Depot.

Can you make a video of how to be successful in a over saturated lawn mowing market? I am 17 and was wondering what your thoughts are on this and how you were able to get a lot of clients. Can you also make videos about what herbicide and fertilizer you use?
    I’m in Houston btw.
    Thanks

    • @Makemoneymowing
      @Makemoneymowing  4 роки тому +5

I would be happy to make a video on the saturated market come up! Short answer for now- my market was saturated when I started & and it’s even more saturated now. Start small, do quality work, and be BETTER than your competition no matter how much bigger of a company they are than you- and the word of mouth will grow 🙂 I didn’t reinvent the wheel with my business- I just tried my best to offer higher quality and better customer service than my completion and boom I’m now here 😎 Another thing to think about... there are (likely) millions of homes in your city as there are in mine. I only needed 20~ customers to match my part time jobs income and realize that I need to quit it ASAP, and then from there around 40-50 customers and now I’m paying all my bills, saving money each month, eating good, and still able to travel whenever I want 😁 You don’t need EVERY yard, you just need a small amount of quality nice customers and you’re gravy ✌🏻 and I will also go heavily over the fertilizer & weed sprays in my courses!
Edit* was commenting from my phone and just now saw you’re in Houston! Bro you’re in a great spot there are gazillions of prospects all around you and these homeowners are waiting to give their money to a young respectful business owner like yourself 🙂🙏👍

As of mid 2022 things have gotten a bit different. They now only sell the HDX versions of the toro/exmark 30” so with the Kawasaki you’re looking at like $2750! (plus it’s heavier and doesn’t turn as well) While the Timemaster is $1500! The good news? All 3 have 13ga. steel decks Aluminum frames, The exact same spindles and drive setup (same trans as the non HDX they no longer offer)
So the Timemaster is really a better prospect with some caveats. One…the motor really isn’t that bad…it’s pretty well matched to the weight ect (which is by far the lightest 30”) You do need to order the exmark tensioner/idler pulleys and get rid of the crappy ones somewhere in the first 100 hours. Also toro’s 30W oil is horrible. Run any quality full synthetic 10W30 and change it at 5-10 hours and then every 50 hours (also add a $15 hour meter) Basically this is the best you can do for under 2 grand now unless you find a non hdx version in stock somewhere (unlikely at this point) or a used deal on one that hasn’t been used a lot. You are more likely to get a dud motor with B&S but you also can get them to run many hundreds of hours. If you getva dud it’s probably going to tank under warranty anyway. Just my thoughts. I wish I’d have bought the non hdx exmark or toro last year. But so far the TM is doing well (knock on wood) There is a 30” DR Power in the same price range now…(within $50-100 anyway) I just hadn’t heard enough about them to gamble that way…they are offset/non timed blades so if that part scares you it might be worth a look. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Thanks for the advice and comparisons. I'm actually on the fence about the time master and turf master and this definitely helped.
I think my back up will be the toro super recycler and if the season ends right I'm hoping to finally get my ZTR. Toro Titan, as you know they own and manufacture eXmark too and have a good reputation, doesn't hurt I have a local dealer less than 10 miles away.
Looking forward to your fertilizing video, I don't offer this service right now because of lack of knowledge, I've researched and practiced on my own yard and have had decent results. Still a little weary though, especially with the couple of customers I have that have spent 3-4k on their lawn. The last thing I want to do or be responsible for is burning it up. I purchased a soil test kit, so again, still learning.

I've been looking into the Toro Super Recycler to start my business soon. I'm glad u talked about it. Yo it's crazy bc earlier today I was looking into my neighbors lawns and saw that they needed to be cut. Next thing u know I see a guy with a pick up and his equipment in the back, just like u. He worked on my front neighbors yard (small-mid size). I was literally watching him on and off from my window and noticed he was taking his sweeet time. I timed him and he took an hour and half to finish. I know that other lawn care guys like u do it much faster. But whatever. If he didnt have another lawn or lots of lawns to go to the rest of the day there's no point in hurting yourself or wearing yourself out on the yard. Sometimes if Im just doing one lawn i will take my time and make it look really good, im very particular about my lawns. I also have metal hips and a metal right caucaneous(heel) so im not as fast as some commercial companies that do 20 lawns a day and I dont want to be. I have lots less overhead

In my experience, it’s difficult to mow, trim, edge and blow a lawn In 20 minutes. Be prepared to take 30 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on the size. The more you mow the more efficient you become. (Sometimes an owner may come out and asks you to trim some bushes-there goes your timing)

Just got mine (Toro Time Master 20199) Used. The only difference from the residential unit is basically the Engine/ Gearbox/Propel system/Wheels /Engine brace. All the parts for the deck and drive belts are exactly the same (Part#'s Honestly expected better parts on the Exmark). While you might not have the gearbox issues you will still have the same pulley issues. But imo that's just general maintenance. Be careful about what you mow over (Bricks and stuff). If you take care of it it will take care of you. The 30" Is a game changer over the 21" plus this mower mulches really good. The amount of time saved will easily pay for any repairs it's not all that hard DIY either. The core parts aren't that expensive either. Will be carrying spare belts for mine. If you know about this mower personally you know.

I do a law office push mowing with a 21 is quicker than with my 61' lazer z because it is so tight that you have to go so slow around obstacles

Great video. Im just a homeowner not in the business but considering the timemaster 30, exmark 30 or ferris fw15. I like doing striping and my front yard is on a hill. Have about an acre, back is pretty flat. about 8600 sq ft in front and 18500sqft in the back. I really like the ferris but need something that will do up a hill. I dont mind walking, i have to keep my legs in shape.

You have found the walking zone! Congratulations. and at some point, you might choose a rider mower of some kind. Your mower might also get you through gates and narrow areas that a larger mower might not fit. Good job, nice video!

Great video! I have a push mower, I walk around I lose weight. Like anything there is no perfect mower. I like to get those expenses push mower, but the one I brought from Walmart work just fine. If I have a huge yard then I bring out my riding mower. It like don't need expense to start out. Go used till you can afford it. Just take it one step at a time

Yes, even a couple inches in blade makes a difference. I ve got 3, 21 inch "franken mowers" that have Harbor Freight Predator engines, on random bodies. (predator is a bad ass engine BTW-Ive got three of them, one of them has over 1200 mows on it) anyway, and Ive got a Toro peronal pace just like yours a customer gave me. When I take that 22" out, I get done about 30 minutes sooner than with the 21". Its like 5 minutes faster per yard. Doesnt seem like much, but when its 100F by 1pm, that 30 minutes counts. The only drawback about those Toro home-owner grade personal pace mowers is the weak Briggs and Stratton engines on them. You need to go with something that has the OHV style motors like the Honda GCV engine

What are the perks and cons to bagging? Are there customers you bag for? Do you charge more for bagging? I don’t think I have seen people bagging lawns.

You have it made if you dont have any hilly yards or yards as such. I live in ga and in a country/ suburban area. We have very large yards and some small. I think due to the difficulty of yard size and shape it very tough just to do 6 yards by myself. If all my yards we flat and small i wouldn't rec a big set up either.
