The song is about a drug bust in 1966 at Fagen and Becker's school, (Bard college, in which they and other students were involved) at Annandale on Hudson (Upstate NY.) G. Gordon Liddy (Daddy Gee in the song) a historical figure who lead the burglary of The Watergate hotel for Nixon, (6 yrs.later) against the Democratic Party, was the prosecutor in the case against the students...He also got a 20 year sentence for his involvement in Watergate, but it was commuted down to 8 yrs., by President Carter, but only served 4 1/2 yrs...Fagen wrote the song because he was pissed that the school planted an undercover cop, (there was a war against "Long-hairs" at the time) and they refused to bail his girlfriend out, since she had nothing to do with it...His case had already been dropped...Sidebar: G.Gordon Liddy was a political psycho. During the case he shot a revolver into the ceiling of the courtroom, but was only reprimanded. Them's were different times!.

Don't forget "Guadalajara won't do...." Fagan wanted to have his girlfriend skip court and flee to Mexico but she wouldn't go.

Hard to believe the guy playing lead guitar went from Steely Dan, to The Doobie Brothers, to being a consultant for the Dept. of Defense and was in fact designing missile guidance systems while he was with Steely Dan. (Jeff "Skunk" Baxter.)

They really don't write a bad song. Each one is full of funk, rock, blues, pop. There's always some extra sauce coming from the lead, chorus, back beat. Never a dull moment in a Dan tune.

As a DJ for more than thirty years, I've come in contact with every genre imaginable. Music from the 70s is, in my opinion, the absolute BEST. You had real musicians playing real music. Most people don't realize this but Donald Fagen was so particular about his recordings that he would spend days if not months getting just one part of the song correct. It was brutal but the result was short of absolutely perfect. If you get an opportunity to see Steely Dan in concert, I highly recommend it, even though Becker is gone now. May he rest in peace.

The genius of this song for me has always been that incredible instrumental duel between Jeff "Skunk" Baxter's lead guitar and Jimmie Haskell's absolutely brilliant horn arrangement. This song only went to #63 on the singles chart in 1973, but over the years has become every Steely Dan tribute band's crowd-pleasing set closer.

Steely Dan was a very innovative Band. First of all, they were excellent Musicians who happened to be very meticulous in the Recording Studio. They were Two Friends who met in Collage in the late 1960's and really hit it big. Their names are Donald Fagen and Walter Beckett. I'm a Steely Dan Fan! But Elvis is still, The KING!

    • @garrymathesen8748
      @garrymathesen8748 2 роки тому

What? First it was Becker not Beckett, second not sure how much of a Dan Fan you are and third the king of Rock and Roll was Chuck Berry, who wrote Johnny B. Good, not Elvis who wrote nothing and barely played guitar.

"You been tellin' me you're a genius
    Since you were seventeen
In all the time I've known you
I still don't know what you mean"
    From "Reelin' In The Years"
    My second favorite lyric is:
"Turn up the Eagles; the neighbors are listening"
on their song "Everything You Did."
And the Eagles responded in kind in their hit "Hotel California:"
"They stab it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast."

About a huge undercover drug bust that went down when he was in college in the sixties. His GF ratted them all out and the college helped with the undercover investigation. So he left and never went back.

Of course he wanted to go to Guadalajara. He got into trouble with G. Gordon Liddy, the guy who masterminded the Watergate scandal that President Nixon resigned over. Liddy was a local prosecutor and in the mood to bust long-haired hippie types for smoking pot. Liddy was always in the mood to arrest hippies. His bandmate got sent to jail, but he didn't get busted. The song is about how he resented the college for allowing the students to get arrested. He said he would never go back until California slid into the sea. Ironically, many years later he was awarded an honorary degree from the same college.
