I remember I got this game in the bargin bin at my local game store. The only reason I got it was because my Mom said "The Dolphin looks cute" Well since I was only 11 at the time and she was buying a game for me I sorta went with what she thought. I remember driving home with that disapointing feeling that I didnt get somthing cooler. Well when I loaded the game up I was hooked. I played it for weeks on end and never put it down. I guess it goes to show you that Moms can pick good games too!
When I was in Algeria, I remember my dad buying this game by mistake thinking that it was compatible with our Playstation. After several hopeless attempts, I decided to try it on my CD player and was surprised to see that I could listen to the music of the game. This song played first... and boy...I was in awe.... mesmerized by a composition which conveyed so much mystery and intrigue to the little kid that I was. I could imagine the story of the game without actually playing it. To this day, I am still amazed by how elaborate and refined this composition is for a music which was produced for a video game. I am now 40 and father to two kids. I am still returning to this video every now and then. Still remembering the transcending experience of listening to the music of a video game that I have never played. A music that is probably burned in my memory forever. I sometime regret of never actually playing the game but a part of me wants to keep that kid's memory and imagination.
That actually is amazing. Music compositions were something else back then! I have a little similar story, kinda with DKC 1. A specific level on that game.
yeah... that was one of the masterpiece of sound tracks for games. I always loved this soundtrack. I miss my childhood... sounds nostalgic to me. Thanks a lot dude.
This music reflects the wonder and dark nature of Ecco. Such a wonderful game. It always seems to be that music makes me want to play the game its from. If only I never listened to FTL music. God that game was hard. Harder even then Ecco. Because you can at least continue after you die from a level.
I never played this game either, but I do remember watching a relative of mine playing it when I was 6 or 7. This music brings back memories of back then.
I remember the first games comming out on disc had it's music easily accessible. Some smart ass figured out money was to be made by selling OST's on a seperate disc. And a lot of the cartridge game music could be listened to if you pushed certain buttons in a sequence. Thanks for sharing.
Yep. They even referenced "Welcome to The Machine" by making that the name of the level before the final boss. Must've really loved _Wish You Were Here._
Hab gestern mal wieder meinen Mega Drive + Mega CD angeschlossen und mir heute den Soundtrack reingezogen. Absolut der Hammer und in der damaligen Zeit konkurenzlos. -> Meisterwerk
There was a system released called the Sega CDX, which was the Genesis and Sega CD system in one...very compact and very cool... It came with several games including Ecco the Dolphin, Sonic CD and a Genesis collection that I think had 5 or so other games... The Ecco CD (which I still own) featured a playable soundtrack...Amazing music....I'm so glad I still have it...
Wow, I love this song. I have never heard it before, but I accidentally stumbled upon it here. Now I let it play repeatedly in the background whilst I play mahjong. :p
"Less melodically than the Mega Drive/Genesis versions"? This soundtrack is my childhood! I tried listening to the other versions of the Ecco soundtrack but it wasn't of my liking. I loved the Sega CD version, both in its soundtrack and the cutscenes that weren't even in the other versions!
Only way I found out was after finding a SEGA CD packet in a copy of Sonic 2 that I got about a year ago for the Genesis. Sure, I had the game already, but never the manual and case, so the backup cartridge was just a bonus.
This game still took advantage of the weak sound chip and turned it into one of the best soundtracks on the console (talking about the original games, not the CD ones, though they're good too!).
Finally catharsis after 28 years. This game was talked about like it was the most amazing thing ever at the time and it was strange, haunting, beautiful and very stylish but absolute dog shit to play once you got past zipping around and jumping (which was initially fun). A triumph of style over substance
Even if it did increase the cost slightly it would have only been for the benefit for the console..SNES might have come out later but not by much...games would always look more vibrant than they ever would on Sega's console...
YES! I was thinking about this same thing just yesterday, especially the part with PS4. And if this game gets a PS4 HD remaster, then I really hope they'll also add in the cutscenes that the Sega CD had (remastered graphics too) and use this soundtrack. And preferably gameplay from the Sega CD that were "fixed" from the Mega Drive/Genesis versions, example instead of starting over at Welcome to the Machine after dying at the final boss level (that the Mega Drive/Genesis does) players can start over at the final boss level (that the Sega CD does).
But if they added better things like a better sound chip, the cost of the console would slightly increase. Also you can't really compare it to the SNES seeing that came later in the 16-bit era, and that PCs will always have better hardware than consoles.
I love the genesis sound chip. Most of the ecco the dolphin music was really, really bad though. 6-op FM synthesis was not meant to produce thick/warm ambient sounds that fit this game. That being said i tend to dislike arranged versions of video game soundtracks.. this is good though.. it reminds me of Vangelis a bit.
My problem was those headache-inducing FM instruments they used on a lot of the tracks. Coulda been done much better.. If they would have ripped off the instrument programs from 'Devilish', it woulda kicked butt :)
I would just listen to the entire soundtrack. You put it in a normal CD player and skip the first track, of course, then record the rest on a cassette tape. :D
lol, this doesn't use a MIDI-triggered sound chip though. It was recorded in a studio using whatever synths the composer wanted and recorded as live .wav audio into the CD itself.
The soundchip was one of THE weakest aspects of the Genesis, compared to the SNES..(and its limited colour palette) you would have thought the hardware engineers at Sega back in '87-88 would have thought to include a better chip than what it had...hell even the PC engine had better sound and that came out not too far from the genesis launch...(well about a year or two..)

They sure can!
"Ecco, if we breath air, why do we live beneath the waves?"
Is that a line from the game, or...?
Martin D. Yes, it is.
W O K E
"How high in the sky can you fly"?
_/music plays_
"The marks on your head look like stars in the sky."
They ARE stars in the sky, Ecco is supposed to have a constellation in his head ;)
"Do you think the Vortex are destroyed?"

Did you ever actually get to play the game?
tu habites en Algérie ?
"You saved our family, the deepest seas will echo our thanks..."
Atmospheric. Haunting. Amazing.
And then there's the music...
yeah... that was one of the masterpiece of sound tracks for games. I always loved this soundtrack. I miss my childhood... sounds nostalgic to me. Thanks a lot dude.
Don't EVER play this while tripping.
You won't stop playing until you pass out from exhaustion.

i think with this virtual reality stuff they have coming out now they should make a new Ecco the dolphin
What's FTL?
@@buenapilapil5513 it's something to do with building spaceships, haven't played it myself yet but that's what i get from it
@@buenapilapil5513 FTL faster than light
I remember when I had this cd I would play it in the background while I was in bed so that it could help me fall asleep. Very soothing.
Wow. No other game music from 93 sounds this good. This is beautiful.
I never played this game either, but I do remember watching a relative of mine playing it when I was 6 or 7.
This music brings back memories of back then.
At some points during this wonderful song it reminds me of music from the movie Blade Runner.
Spencer Nilsen did a great job on the soundtrack.
Beautiful! Sega certainly hired some of the most talented musicians in the business.
Brings me back! This and the water level in Donkey Kong Country....wow....games ARE art, there is no doubt in my mind....
Most beautiful track in this game! :)
This sounds very much like something you'd hear from Vangelis, getting some Blade Runner vibes from this!
this sounds so much better than Genesis.
Genesis is suspenseful but Sega CD is A MASTERPIECE
This is the sound when you enter heaven
This gives me chills.. So beautiful. I really must track down a copy of this.
I remember the first games comming out on disc had it's music easily accessible. Some smart ass figured out money was to be made by selling OST's on a seperate disc. And a lot of the cartridge game music could be listened to if you pushed certain buttons in a sequence. Thanks for sharing.
Very 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond'
You can tell the composers listened to Floyd before writing this soundtrack.
Yep. They even referenced "Welcome to The Machine" by making that the name of the level before the final boss. Must've really loved _Wish You Were Here._
Has a Metroid Prime-y feel to it.
Beautiful and so pure.
One of the best "underrated" title screen of all time! Period!
as fun as the game was it still scares the crap out of me till this day.
A E S T H E T I C AS FUCK YOU GUISE

Simplemente perfecto sonido inigualable bello
Good music to play before going to bed. -u-
Same here. I still listen to it on occasion to sleep.
Both are gorgeous soundtracks

Amazing soundtrack! This reminds me of Ecco Defender of the Future music.... :)
this always got stuck in my head o.o
The game top 10 music soundtrack sent me here.
Spencer Nilsen rules.
Love how cute Ecco is on the cover, but good God this theme is amazing.
Wow, I love this song. I have never heard it before, but I accidentally stumbled upon it here.

Vaporwave sent me here
First vaporwave album was called Eccojams, and was almost certainly inspired by this soundtrack
@@Luke-tt3dt I've listened to Eccojams and i appreciate you bringing that up because now i want to listen to it again 🎧

If this isn't melodic then Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, Brian Eno, Isao Tomita, and Mike Oldfield isn't melodic
CD player recognizes this game as an audio disc
*WIN*
I never even knew this was for the Sega CD. I've owned the Genesis/Megadrive version for years but I've never heard of this
Saludos cordiales desde Michoacán México viva sega siempre
Perfecto
This was brilliant, but still love the Mega Drive title screen, but maybe that's because I mainly played the Mega Drive version.
I never knew Ecco was on Sega CD :o
Cette musique ressemble tellement à du Jean Michel Jarre...
Sadness of da 90s
Anika Carter obligatory dolphin suicide
Its Sad OSt and Beatiful :'v
i wish they had the sega cd version for the pc...they keep porting over the genesis version instead
"Keep your eyes on me, my sleepy friend..."

I fucking LOVED that game.
@Skylinesandsunsets oh yea.....very cool
Fun fact: Echo the dolphin is based on the dolphins experimented on during the 1960' MK Ultra incident.
16 years is not such along time.

Sounds like a Vangelis track
Thanks for the soundtrack. Will you upload Ecco Tides of Time too?
I think the name of the track I would listen to on a loop was "Medusa Bay".

Sound like Pink Floyd...
nice !!!!

(Ecco Tides of Time soundtrack, sorry)
Check out my rendition of the Ecco sega genesis theme!!
Even if it did increase the cost slightly it would have only been for the benefit for the console..SNES might have come out later but not by much...games would always look more vibrant than they ever would on Sega's console...
The best sega CD soundtrack ever! I wish Ecco would get a remake for the PlayStation 4, Xbox one or nintendo switch, who agrees?

The Genesis version is better :/ Totally different, but at least it can get stuck in your head.
2024 Anyone
Is there a name for this song
Aqua Vistas
And what was that about the SNES having an amazing sound chip?
In all fairness this was done through a CD, not a cartridge.
lol, this doesn't use a MIDI-triggered sound chip though. It was recorded in a studio using whatever synths the composer wanted and recorded as live .wav audio into the CD itself.
You guys are forgetting one thing: it's still better. No matter what technology was used, it was created at the same time and the music was better.
That Sega fanbrat Kool-Aid is intense.
This gives me Stranger Things vibes.
The makers of Stranger Things would kill to have this level of soundtrack
yeah I M U C H prefer Genesis OST
