The band was formed in 2013 by the backup singer/rhythm guitarist Miku Kobato. She had just wrapped up her contract from a Japanese idol show win, went to another production company with the concept of café maids playing hard rock, and convinced them to let her put the band together. She was the lead singer but felt the need to have a singer with a deeper voice in the lead. The band's sound would also benefit from having a rhythm guitar, so she asked the lead guitarist to teach her how to play. Production companies want to write the music, and often toss bands out if they don't create a hit right away. The band pulled off a Hail Mary, with a huge international hit music video, "Thrill." The band pushed to have their own songs aired. Twelve years later, the band is still together, having 140+ recordings, and independence from production companies. Kanami Tōno, the lead guitarist is the composer, Miku writes most of the lyrics, but in truth, they all have a piece in creating the final product. All instrumentalists have been recognized with signature instrument releases. For example, this past month, PRS released the Kanami Tōno limited edition electric guitar. Only ten people (like Carlos Santana) have been given that honor, Kanami being the only Japanese guitarist and only female guitarist on that honor role. Band Maid fans are referred to as Maidiacs. They refer the audience as Masters and Princesses, and concerts are servings, presented with a magic spell (all part of the Japanese Maid Café culture). Outside of doing reviews, you might want to watch the seven episodes (30 minutes each) of the documentary of the band by Ohrenje. You will see that their amazing diverse discography is only one aspect . Each member is dedicated to their craft, to their band mates, and to their fans. Live performances are always outstanding, but the MVs should not be overlooked. They have transformed into Geisha apprentices to produce two Band Maiko videos ("Secret Maiko Lips" for example). They have produced partially animated videos (like "Unleash"). Their instrumentals (like "Onset" and "From Now On") will blow you away. Want acoustic, check out their pandemic special ("Sayonakidori " is sung by Miku, backed-up by just the drummer and bassist ). Do you want three minutes of just the bassist and drummer doing an intro? They just released 20 songs not on their Tenth Anniversary concert recordings, with Misa (the Bare Foot Assasin bassist) and Akane Hirose (the forever smiling drummer ) opening the spin off, "Honkai". This past year also saw one of their biggest collaborations, "Show Them" with The Warning (a three sister rock group from Mexico). There are so many great songs to review. Welcome, thanks and happy new year from Japan 有難う💛。 My wife and I witnessed this very performance at the venue on Nov.26, last year. Very exciting 3-hour-40-minute-long show with 33-song setlist. We were in bliss (and happy fatigue thereafter 😄). Band-Maid is one of the best bands in our country, especially in live performance. We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.)

What makes this even more crazy is that this is 27th song out of a setlist of 33 for that concert, and they kept it this quality for the entire time. Also, their lead guitarist, Kanami, composes the songs. The rhythm guitar + backup vocalist, Miku (also founder of the band), usually writes the lyrics (however this song in particular is written by the lead singer, Saiki). What I'm getting at here is you didn't know how right you were when you said they did everything! Their songs are fully produced by the band themselves!
How? 25 years of practice. These women are masters of their craft. Now do another one. The Warning is another great female band. Trident, Lovebites, there are so many.
As rock bands go (without getting into the metal scene), in my opinion, they are the best, male or female from any country. However, in the Japanese heavy metal scene, there are a number all-female bands who have similar levels of elite talent on every instrument, most notably LOVEBITES, Nemophila, Aldious, and the newest lineup of Hagane.

The band was formed in 2013 by the backup singer/rhythm guitarist Miku Kobato. She had just wrapped up her contract from a Japanese idol show win, went to another production company with the concept of café maids playing hard rock, and convinced them to let her put the band together. She was the lead singer but felt the need to have a singer with a deeper voice in the lead. The band's sound would also benefit from having a rhythm guitar, so she asked the lead guitarist to teach her how to play. Production companies want to write the music, and often toss bands out if they don't create a hit right away. The band pulled off a Hail Mary, with a huge international hit music video, "Thrill." The band pushed to have their own songs aired. Twelve years later, the band is still together, having 140+ recordings, and independence from production companies. Kanami Tōno, the lead guitarist is the composer, Miku writes most of the lyrics, but in truth, they all have a piece in creating the final product. All instrumentalists have been recognized with signature instrument releases. For example, this past month, PRS released the Kanami Tōno limited edition electric guitar. Only ten people (like Carlos Santana) have been given that honor, Kanami being the only Japanese guitarist and only female guitarist on that honor role. Band Maid fans are referred to as Maidiacs. They refer the audience as Masters and Princesses, and concerts are servings, presented with a magic spell (all part of the Japanese Maid Café culture). Outside of doing reviews, you might want to watch the seven episodes (30 minutes each) of the documentary of the band by Ohrenje. You will see that their amazing diverse discography is only one aspect . Each member is dedicated to their craft, to their band mates, and to their fans. Live performances are always outstanding, but the MVs should not be overlooked. They have transformed into Geisha apprentices to produce two Band Maiko videos ("Secret Maiko Lips" for example). They have produced partially animated videos (like "Unleash"). Their instrumentals (like "Onset" and "From Now On") will blow you away. Want acoustic, check out their pandemic special ("Sayonakidori " is sung by Miku, backed-up by just the drummer and bassist ). Do you want three minutes of just the bassist and drummer doing an intro? They just released 20 songs not on their Tenth Anniversary concert recordings, with Misa (the Bare Foot Assasin bassist) and Akane Hirose (the forever smiling drummer ) opening the spin off, "Honkai". This past year also saw one of their biggest collaborations, "Show Them" with The Warning (a three sister rock group from Mexico). There are so many great songs to review. Before long, you will be talking pigeon, adding "Po" to the end of your sentences (watch those Ohrenje documentary episodes).

Welcome, thanks and happy new year from Japan 有難う💛。 My wife and I witnessed this very performance at the venue on Nov.26, last year. Very exciting 3-hour-40-minute-long show with 33-song setlist. We were in bliss (and happy fatigue thereafter 😄).
Band-Maid is one of the best bands in our country, especially in live performance. We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.)

Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Don’t Let Me Down, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.

What makes this even more crazy is that this is 27th song out of a setlist of 33 for that concert, and they kept it this quality for the entire time.
Also, their lead guitarist, Kanami, composes the songs. The rhythm guitar + backup vocalist, Miku (also founder of the band), usually writes the lyrics (however this song in particular is written by the lead singer, Saiki). What I'm getting at here is you didn't know how right you were when you said they did everything! Their songs are fully produced by the band themselves!
How? 25 years of practice. These women are masters of their craft. Now do another one. The Warning is another great female band. Trident, Lovebites, there are so many.

As rock bands go (without getting into the metal scene), in my opinion, they are the best, male or female from any country. However, in the Japanese heavy metal scene, there are a number all-female bands who have similar levels of elite talent on every instrument, most notably LOVEBITES, Nemophila, Aldious, and the newest lineup of Hagane.
Never stop in the middle of a solo. Shut up when Kanami is speaking!!
