"Draw what you see, not what you think you see." Almost 40 years ago I watched a Rolf Harris video, teaching basics of drawing. That quote he said near the start of the video, drawing a cup and saucer to demonstrate. "Draw what you see, not what you think you see." That one line is the single most important lesson I ever had and has stuck with me since I was a child. Over the years I have passed it on to many other people.
find basic structure of hands, normally they are with squares. Also try with perspective as he said on the video. I thought I was doing well with hands, but last year I had to take a class on humans interaction with objects (I study industrial design so it had to happen) and I learned much more! ask people to tell you what to draw, and simply start like that. First, structure, then form and leave the details at the end. :)
Great list, and thanks for mentioning my work, Stan. It's funny, I'm working on a similar video, about common errors in perspective. They're all different points than you've listed. As you say, we all make these mistakes, and have to be vigilant to avoid them.

A common mistake I make is not considering how gravity or movement can affect posture and impact. Like when sitting down your leg shape is squished more flat etc.

The biggest problem I tend to face is actually instinctive perfectionism. A rather bad instinct where mistakes, of any kinds, outright hurt my confidence. Because of this, the principle of learning from mistakes tends to get lost because my brain focuses too much on the mistake part. And to top it off it is, as I just said, an *instinct.*

Day 37 of putting Egyptian hieroglyphics in realistic portraits. Proko hasn't found me yet, but I can hear his footsteps as he searches in the night. This place will not be safe for much longer, when the sun rises, I'm going to make a break for the nearby caves. If I don't make it, please, tell my story, so others do not make the same mistakes.
You hit the nail on the head for me here: spending years and years trying to get drawings to look even half-right and I always always always crowd the page with figures that are way too big and proportionally wonky. I can't be arsed half the time to do proportions and it's costing me good drawings and good ideas spent away under bad and lazy practice. Hearing it expressed clearly and explicitly in relation to what I feel my problem was (I couldn't keep everything on the page) helps a lot. Thanks!

My avatar, while a years-old doodle of mine by this point, is a smaller example of what I mean.

At 3:23 I just bursted in laugh because thats totally me and I felt proko was really speaking to me, "lets hide this in shadows", "lets hide the hard part of that though perspective" hahahaha
Yea, most people do a similar thing. Well, people you aren't Kim Jung Gi. That said, there is a big difference between being messy out of habit and using less than accurate lines as placeholders in your underlying drawing. So when you are drawing your messy foundation, are you thinking as much as you could be? or are you kind of letting your hand do it's thing until a good line reveals itself? I find all too often these messy constructions are just a waste of graphite. Can you be more reliant on your knowledge and less on semi random sketchy lines? If so, why not be?
@@GussieBabes I like to think of it as drawing loosely. Jim Lee, a comic book artist from Marvel draws very "messy" when doing rough sketches but in the end, it all pays off. Since he draws so quickly, he's able to make decisions faster and fix his mistakes faster and it ends up a little messy but not so messy that he can't tell what he's drawing. I personally think drawing messy is a good thing as long as you know what you're doing and it gives you confidence.
I absolutely love this teacher, I've been learning so much in such a short amount of time! Unconsciously I've been making many of these mistakes and I'm glad he's pointed them out before I got stuck doing them =)
I got called out so hard in this. I avoid drawing humans, I have messy lines, sometimes I break my continuity, and proportions. I really need to get my skills together, thanks.
This is all excellent drawing advice I've heard from various drawing teachers throughout my life. "Draw what you see, not what you think you see" is probably the hardest one for people to understand, but this is explained very well here. Thanks Stan.

I adore how you make this video a bit of a wake up call to people that make these mistakes, without making people feel dumb for making them, great job!
Not into drawing or painting but your personality and the way u presented the information was excellent that even a non-artist like me can easily understand. Great stuff
This video is from 2018, this is so relevant.. I just love it. Nd for sure I will give it a try . The only problem I face is making face from different perspective .

Lol no. She also isn’t a man or a baby.
Of course Proko meant he said that
7:30 i thought I was the only one who did that silly movement of head moving back while drawing.
Does anyone else try to draw expressions and then your face hurts and you realize you’re making that expression

I adore how you make this video a bit of a wake up call to people that make these mistakes, without making people feel dumb for making them, great job!
Not into drawing or painting but your personality and the way u presented the information was excellent that even a non-artist like me can easily understand. Great stuff

"I WILL FIND YOU AND I WILL TEACH YOU HOW TO DRAW"
Wow, I'm applying Egyptian hieroglyphics as facial features to all of my drawings right now.
Drawing basics course please 🙏😭
Yes, yes and yes. As a 20 year Art educator, these are issues I've seen thousands of times. This is spot on.
We dont have mistakes in drawing, we have happy accidents.

I guess I'm going to start drawing in Egyptian hieroglyphs then.
"i will find you and i will TEACH YOU HOW TO DRAW"
me: sweat nervously*
This was really helpful. I do most of the “mistakes”, but I don’t consider them happy. Most of the time impatience is the problem and a need for closer observation. Onward I go while I wait for Proko to find me.
never have i felt so called out, yet so appreciative.
