It sort of reminds me of a cross between Tim Burton and Gerald Scarfe's animation for The Wall: that creepy edge, combined with odd transformations and transitions.
I just saw an interview where Sol said they are influenced film scores. She spoke of TIm Burton's films as being part of the ingredients of composition. I certainly can see that here.
Stunning! This seemed like an anomalous song on the CD, something fascinating, telling its own story, yet not quite connected to the other songs. The video gives it a life of its own and tells the story I thought I was hearing when I first put the CD in the changer.
I saw this video years ago and, for some reason, thought it was someone else. I have been looking for this song again since then and could never find it. Land of Confusion just came up on one of my playlists and I immediately remembered. So glad to find this again!

As a Russian, I see nothing offensive in this video. It opens with Russia being poor, the alcohol showing that many Russians were trying to hold onto the grandeur of Peter the Great and Alexander I, but the recent humiliations against the Japanese and Germany lead the other powers, represented as a rival street music group, to laugh at him. Russia begins having dreams of change, dreams of playing a different kind of music. Mother Russia grants him this opportunity, and Russia successfully rebranded himself. His new-found success corrupts him, however, and the larger he gets, the more violent. In the last minutes, Mother Russia intervenes, calming Russia down and bringing him 'back to Earth'. Although Russia now smiles, his psyche is permanently altered. The ghost of communism still lingers in the form of a dragon (perceived as an evil creature in Russian mythology), both INSIDE of Russia and in China, Russia's greatest ally in the 21st century.
Russo-Japanese War, 1904-1905, in which the Japanese kicked us out of Port Arthur AND destroyed the entire Baltic fleet, and WWI, during which the Gdrmans advanced quite heavily onto Russian land.
I see as just the story of an artist dealing with the fact that he was exiled from Russia for not towing the party line and rejected in Berlin for being a Communist. In the end, he thinks of taking vengeance on the societies that cut off his dreams, and the women pulls him from his thoughts and places him reality. But the dragon haunts him, possible apathy and isolation, and walks off with empty eyes and little hope.
After looking at that ending again, and noticing his smile, maybe his future is still uncertain in his eyes. I could be that he has seen that is a way to change these societies so other won't suffer like him, which could be symbolized by the woman. However, his nihilism and hopelessness still haunts him, being the dragon. Also, first fantasy: Him in Russia. Supported, but he is surrounded by false Communists (pigs) and is exiled Second: Him in Germany. Free expression, but quickly cut for his history and beliefs. Third: Struggle between his rage (himself), his hope (the woman), and his nihilism (the dragon).
Nothing anti-Russian, but anti-Soviet... the guy escaped to Berlin, but he's still Russian in his heart and he can't get rid of Soviet ideology... it brings all his problems and his genius suffers because he feels out of place... he wants all those luxuries of European life, but the boundaries in his head, created by the Soviet system don't allow him to let himself go... Nice video and good lyrics, to my mind :)
It's not super anti-Soviet either. The guy didn't escape; he was exiled to Berlin after he misused his power as a potent symbol to force women to sleep with him. Berlin was half under the control of the Soviet Union for most of the Cold War; he wouldn't have had access to any sort of western luxuries even if he hadn't been homeless and Soviet.
@@Oops-All-Ghosts I know that you made this comment three years ago, but I was curious where you read about him abusing his power. It's very believable and makes sense in the song, but I am struggling to find anything online. Thanks!
Of course, a Soviet person feels terrible in the Western world. It's like coming from the land of giants to the world of Lilliputians, who live in stupid little philistine joys and do not understand what scale he saw and felt. The USSR was the land of great people, this is Atlantis that has left us
@@sweetlachok lol, did you live in the USSR? All people I know who actually did live there, had no doubt that USSR was nothing more than an anti-utopia where most ordinary people lived in quiet desperation. Not something to be romanticized by edgy Western teenagers.

Brilliant!!! The story, the moral, the music, the animation.. it moved my heart.. it made me cry for all the poor men and women who grew up knowing nothing but hatred and inevitably became it.....
If this reminds you of Tim Burton it might be because one of their biggest influences is Danny Elfman the guy who scored the majority of Tim Burtons films.

Eric James I have ALWAYS thought that this could go into a Tim Burton film...that totally makes sense now heh.
Not just in terms of the video, either. This and several others feel more like something from a musical without a film or play.

A timeless masterpiece of its period and those to come ☺👍
This is one of my favorite songs
They should write a musical
I know right! They're music is so theatrical and dramatic. I think they're style could really lend itself to a musical.
