- We all know the heavy hitters of the 80's and 90's/ Uniden, Cobra, Realistic, and Midland, but also running around in the mix was Maxon. They made a lot of decent radios back in the day and also made a lot of the radios for Radio Shack as well. My first 40 channel radio, a Realistic TRC-444 was a Maxon inside.

Thank you for sharing this video. I miss Radio Shack.
if I win the 1 billion dollar lottery I will put two Radio Shack stores in each of the States in America !🇺🇸
You are welcome!
@unitedstatesirie7431-- that would be awesome-
That Maxon must have been the AMC Rambler of the CB world. No frills, no bells and whistles but runs for ever ! Good purchase!!
You might be right on that one.
What I find amazing is how with all the old tech in the world, CB's still work! I love these small and older CB's.
Couldn't agree more!
You don't realize it until you have been through it it took two ice storms to realize that
Hi Eric it's Rob in Toronto T.C.R. 5322 I lost 1of my TRC221 in a fire 🔥. I bought 4 of them in 2020 for 100$ Canadian 2 of them I gave away as Christmas gifts 2 I kept 1 had the antenna broken. I found a used TRC216 with a corrosion issues but a solid antenna and it came with a microphone so I performed a antenna transplant and with great success I'm back on the air plus I got a handheld microphone yay keep up with the good videos Man
I am sorry that you lost one- I also love that you are giving them away, it helps to spread the job of radio.
@@FarpointFarms I don't have SSB. Capability so in the morning I usually go on Channel 14 and I give you a shout almost every day you just never know the conditions are right even with a handheld I can shoot skip I still sing praises about backup Communications even in a big city like Toronto power grids can go down it did in 2009 and an ice storm we had most people living in Toronto weather wise we're in a pretty beautiful spot but history tells another story in 1954 Toronto got hit with a hurricane Hazel so to say that it'll never happen again is to be it's pretty foolish
Thank you for the video. Good very basic cb radio in it's simplistic form (that can be a good thing).
We are in the beginning of what is forecast to be a very busy hurricane season. I have looked at the above normal water temperature in the Gulf of Mexico / Carabean and the open Atlantic.
Our government may not be as effective in helping it's citizens when they need it most. So helping ourselves by being able to communicate with our neighbors can be a life saving asset.
1/4 wave vertical ground plane antennas are easy to build and relatively inexpensive to make. A mobile antenna with 4 ground radial wires of light guage tied off to 4 Paracord guy lines and a coax feedline and 15 -20 feet of chain link fence rail for support. your on the air with a pretty inexpensive antenna that will outperform just about anny FRS - gmrs radio and doesn't require a license to operate.
Thanks for the video, 73 GOD bless Earnest k5ewm.
Thanks for the info on the hurricane season!
Yesterday when I was traveling, I noticed that all the highway department trucks in WV appeared to be CB equipped. I heard a good bit of regular radio chatter and was able to navigate a traffic jam a little more quickly by knowing in advance which lane was best to be in.
Also, I wanted to mention, I was able to chat with some guys that were on their base stations. I was using the President McKinley II FCC radio and a Tram 3500 antenna on plain AM, and we were chatting while we were 63 miles apart. This was in WV, and I was way up on some hill on I-79. That was pretty cool.
63 miles is some great distance for that-
I have a mobile and several 40 channel walkie-talkies. They made some decent radios and from what I remember they were easy on the pocket.
You are right, nothing fancy so it did not break the bank- It made it easier for everyone to afford one.
Funny, this looks identical to a Midland CB radio that I have. Only difference is that they flipped the radio over and relabeled the front panel. My unit has the channel buttons on the Mike, as well as a PA Jack on the back. OK everybody, GET YOUR BOOTS ON! 73.
I am sure it is the same, just with the midland name. Many other brands have the same cards inside
Really popular here in The Netherlands, we used it for packet radio, the Maxon was perfect for packet radio
Awesome, thanks for sharing
I found some pretty cool little radios just the other day. They are GE Y7010 handhelds. They look like they’ve never been used. Made in 1965. I gotta get a little free time to give them a test
Sometimes finding the free time is the hardest. That is my problem many days
Maxon made great radio equipment. Maxon was also known in the commercial and public safety radio industry.
Yeah they made business band radio's, 49 mhz radio's as well
I think they are kinda like mitsubishi in the automotive world. They are makers of many brands with different names.
great old CB . still working. The Maxon I have is 49 MHz ones run on 9V battery and has belt clip. I have Radio shack Space Portal 49 MHz one. and a kids one from yard sale. look just like the one in Toy Story. Girlfriend got it . turns out 49 MHz and they all talk together. not much range. but quit. NO one uses 49 MHz any more . still legal to use. Ringway Manchester on you tube has same Maxon 49 MHz he did video on it. shocked me .I have the same set of 2. and he in England. a lot of short wave on his channel.
I will have to check out that channel- Thanks
Videos like these are back to your roots - CB and shortwave radios. I noticed that you seem to have more views on this type of content, too.
I think my channel is really a radio/cb channel- I love being able to share what I can find.
That was my first radio except the realistic version trc 501 thanks for the video
I thought this looked like a RS model. Thanks!
@@FarpointFarms ya no problem. Thanks for posting this, brought back some memories
Eric, not only did I have a Maxon CB years ago, but, the best Walkie Talkie I ever had for a Public Safety radio in the Fire Service was also a Maxon!
They are nice little radios. I wonder why they didn't make it.
@@FarpointFarms I figure they just didn't have enough bells and whistles for most people?
About your comment at the end... Keep up the great videos man. Been watching you for many years, and I'm not even a CB guy. Ham and GMRS are my main, but I really like the option of CB. (I own 1 Cobra 19 AM/FM that you reviewed)
I appreciate that, Thank you
Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
I miss Radio Shack too.
I think we all do- I heard a rumor that they are opening some brick and mortar stores this year.
So many for these radios have been in so many vehicles over the years that the original power supply cords are nonexistent.
I agree- finding a powersupply in the "wild" is non existent. I have seen so many at flea markets with no cords, power, etc
I bought another CB radio two months ago. I am also thinking about buying a new Yaesu FT-60R VHF/UHF dual band handheld radio for hunting and Survival uses. ✅ I like this handheld radio because is uses a rechargeable battery pack and can also function with alkaline batteries.
Having a radio for those uses is smart. Better to have and not need
@@FarpointFarms I am going to buy a good quality 15" inch dual band aftermarket antenna to attach to my Yaesu FT-60R radio for better performance.
I have one of those... I bought it at least 20 years ago brand new in the box for around $20. Mine doesn't transmit properly but I think it's probably just an issue with the mic. Going to be a fun project to troubleshoot.
That does sound like a fun project.
Very cool old radio.
I love being able to show different radios.
Cool basic radio! Love the t-shirt, didnt see it in your store. Plans on selling that design soon??
I used to have it on there, I might have to add it back.
Thanks for the video. I grew up on CB and I still like it today. I'm curious about your shirt is that 1670 Khz? If so that's something I want to try and listen out for here in the Kansas City area.
That is my part 15 LPAM radio station. It's also available on Shoutcast. Search for WFPF.
@@FarpointFarms thanks I'll give it a listen :-)
Professor CB, did you know there is a Radio Shack in Lenoir? I've been there several times and since taking to the manger, they've been stocking more President radios. I showed them my McKinley AM/SSB and they ordered some.
Thank you for working your channel. I even watch your videos on things that don't interest me because maybe I would be if I knew more about the subject.
Thanks for letting me know- I think I see a road trip in the future, maybe they will let me make a video of their store.
I'm sure they'd love the publicity. It's half Radio Shack and half a Christian bookstore. It's still a decent size store and they pack a lot of things in it.
I was happy when I came across the store as I hadn't seen one since the store in West Palm Beach closed sometime around 2009ish. A friend of mine since gradeschool sent me a picture of one in Tennessee where he lives now in Knoxville area.
a radio that's fine for long trips, getting smokey reports, shoot the sh*t
Indeed-
Probably quiet because of the solar activity going on...there was a little skip yesterday.
It has been really hit or miss lately- we peak in 2025 for activity so it might be a long time for things to go back to "normal"
Maxon not Maxton also made a lot of the smaller midland precision series radios
I had no idea that they made radios for companies other than Radio Shack.
Question, Do you mispronounce and misspell radio names on purpose, Maxon is Maxton, Retevis is Retreevis? I really like you videos. Been a subscriber you years.
No, I'm just bad with names.
Nice little radio. I was thinking of to handle names. 858MD "that is my area code and short for metal detecting or 858fusion. Which one do you think sounds better?
I'd go with 858Fusion. Sounds cool to me!
@@FarpointFarms perfect that is what it will be.
Love your channel, i just got into GMRS with 2 Retevis Ailunce HAG1 handhelds and would like to get a CB for my truck, and would like it to have SSB capabilities, any recomendations for a good reliable unit, I unfortunately don't have alot of $$ to spend , any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, your brother from Washington state
Thank you-- The biggest thing is that you don't need a fancy radio but you need a good antenna. If your antenna is not great, your radio will not work the way you want it to. There are so many great radios to choose from that I can't say just one model
Very basic radio, but did what it was supposed to do.
Just a basic radio-
