The fact that this was focused upon in last year's season to the point that Nightwing's death was immediately disgraced by his coffin having an oversized ass on it. That, along with the Valentine's special and everything else in that season, made me lose interest in the Harley Quinn series.
I think the fundamental dynamics of sexualization in comics has led to this in a weird way. People complain a lot about how women get sexualized in comics, and when someone wants to say that it happens to men too, Nightwing is the example of men being sexualized the way women are (I think that in general when men are sexualized in comics otherwise, it's done in a way to show off the man as an individual to be admired, whereas with women it's done to show them as something to be desired and ogled, but that's not the point of this comment, just context for it). And I think him being THE example has led to a weird effect where he has to continue to be THE example. He's sort of become the one male character that people are "allowed" to project all of that onto. I don't know that it's being consciously done at all, but I think that at on some level there's a feeling among parts of fandom and the actual creators of "if we address how this is messed up for Nightwing, then we REALLY have no choice but to admit it's equally messed up for women and have a real reckoning with it and the differences in how male and female sexuality are portrayed in comics." I think that people don't really want to have a frank conversation about all that, so that leads to them just broadly de-sexying female characters (which I'm generally okay with, I disagree with most complaints about that and think they miss the nuance of the issue) because comics still have a default idea of female sexuality that's kind of objectifying. Not to say that it's the only way female sexuality is shown and there aren't empowered examples of it, but I do think that those examples need to have intentionality behind them and without that intent, you're more likely just get more objectification. And rather than uping the sexiness of the men to try and bring it into balance that way (which I don't think is necessarily the right approach anyway, personally) it's like Nightwing is bear the weight of the objectification of all men in comics on his magnificent thighs. So in conclusion, I think that Nightwing's ass is serving as a totem of male objectification in comics. Something that, likely unintentionally, can allow people to keep saying that men and women in comics are objectified equally when no other male hero comes anywhere close.

I’ve noticed that despite all the bragging about how comics have matured it feels more immature sometimes than the era when they were directly appealing to teenage boys. You can’t try to desexualize women and not appeal to teenage boys then be really creepy with characters like Dick. People like attractive characters but they like them as CHARACTERS with depth.

I do admittedly love a lot of the variant covers, and typically find myself buying multiple copies of an issue for the covers, which I know also inflates the sales numbers. I love the Dan Mora ones -- I have a lot, if not all of them. Thinking about doing a video on my favorites because Nightwing does have some amazing variant covers.

Ive literally stopped reading Nightwing since the Devon Grayson run because they just turned my favorite character from a sweet demi sexual leader with amazing ethics and optimism into a himbo man whore. I hate it. He even gets dumbed down for his relationship with Barbara. He and Kori were still the best and everyone else either of them were with isnt as good. The fact they keep molesting him too... like damn, even Powergirl and Koriand'r who were always sexualized that didnt take over their personality. (Kori got a little of it in that awful amanda conners series) Powergirl was never assaulted because of it. I really hope the new Waters run with my favorite Dexter Soy stays good and redeems the character. I just dont want to read soft core porn with a nightwing skinsuit.

You put into words feelings I didn’t even know I had, even though I greatly appreciate hot characters. I think some fan-service related to that sometimes is fine. I enjoy it and get a good laugh out of it sometimes. But I think it’s kinda weird how OBSESSED people are with his ass, to the point of his personality being changed when those people write and interpret him. These people love to write him as a hypersexual dumb “man whore” (and also remove other traits I love about him), when in reality he is pretty smart and quite demisexual. It’s fine to have a healthy appreciation for his *cough* assets, but to hyperfocus on it to the point of dumbing down and minimizing his personality when you write him is weird. It’s okay for a character to be sexy, but not when that’s all they are. People rightfully complain when all of this is done with female characters. The same treatment should be given when it happens to male characters. Minimizing and dumbing down a character’s personality to objectify them is just wrong. No matter who it is. And I know people can “do what they want” or whatever, but I still encourage these people to at least really think about WHY they are doing it, and what beliefs they may hold that would lead them to do this.
And this is why I don't want Barbara Gordon and Dick Grayson to be together because writers always do stuff like this whether it's Cannon or not it's always Barbara Gordon breaking up with him because of some superficial reasoning and really not a good reason to the point where it's just like at this point he has less issues when he's with Starfire then he does with Barbara Gordon.
