Thank you. Searching for written explanations of this has proved fruitless. I appreciate the visual guidance.

Helpful video, just in time. My geranium looked promising and compact earlier this spring, now it's leggy already. Good to know I can prune safely. Thanks.

Brutal but worth it, must give it a try.

Very helpful, wasn't sure if I should cut it while it was blowing, but mine looks more like a tumbleweed at this point. Haha

Exactly the video I need. My geranium Rozanne is very leggy and expanding like a huge spider.

They come back in a nice rounded shape, but in my case, they don't flower again. Perhaps I wait too late to do the Chelsea chop.

I adore H Geraniums and have loads! I have never done this chop before. It looks very drastic! Mine tend to go leggy at the end of June in the far south east UK. Is it too late to do this then? Also, how long does it take to flower again after the chop?

I do wish you had showed a less drastic prune. I am not willing to go that drastic, plus we don’t know if or how long it takes to come back too possibly rebloom.

It looks like Geranium X Magnificum (purple Cranesbill).

Similar to mine “Johnson’s Blue” geranium

I have never seen a geranium like that. It is beautiful! What is it called? I need that in my garden.

maybe you are thinking about "pelargonium" that is often called Geranium but it's a different plant

Should I cut them back like this in fall, as well?

Just leave them now - but in Spring as growth starts just cut it all back to the ground.

@@paultsworld first year with them and they have emerged from snow melt of course all matted down and brown. I shouldn’t cut back until I see new growth? I appreciate advice!

Is it ok to do that in mid july? And how long does it take to bloom again?
    Thank you for sharing!

You can prune it now and new leaves will start to grow through the rest of the summer. You may be lucky to have a few more flowers buy the end of summer but more than likely it won't flower again until next late spring.
