I moved at the end of March 5 years ago and had to leave my garden behind (zone 5) My Rozanne was near a large rock and the soil had thawed a little and I dug that sucker out and brought that sucker with me...half frozen and all. Potted it up and planted it in the spring and it lived to tell the tale. I love this plant and bought another for the other side of the garden.

A few years ago I planted Rozanne on a south-facing (dryish) slope in my front yard. It survived, but really didn't do very well. I transplanted the plant last year to my partly sunny, partly shady back yard and wow did it explode. Its blooms are so beautiful and plentiful. Thank you for the wonderful video. Rozanne is my favorite Geranium. I'm unsure about the future of my gardens this year. Had a fire which burnt my entire second story and waiting on the insurance is like waiting on molasses to run in the winter! So pretty

I have to tell you your love for geranium Roxanne rubbed off on me and last year, while watching your video ( I couldn’t even wait until the end 😂😂😂), I ordered 3 of them……. By the end of summer I had 9 plants!!! You enabler you!!😂😂😂😂 I have to say they are so incredibly beautiful and so flashy in their color! Too bad it’s sterile because I would love to go from 9 to…… 90!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣I also love the way they intertwine in between all neighboring plants. Thank you so much for your video!! 🌷🌷🌷

And let’s not talk about the winter sewn seeds I have outside in milk jugs……. No signs of life but I still have about a foot and a half of snow on the ground!!! I plant rozanne in containers with other perennials and it is so beautiful how it cascades over the pot. This plant does need regular water and also does not do well if transplanted during the growing season so make sure you plant it in a permanent place.
Excellent advice Bruce! 👍 Especially the plant needing regular water. I find Rozanne a perfect match with my Little Lime Hydrangeas as they seem to love the same amount of water. And I love how they weave through my Totally Tangerine Geums too. I haven't tried them in pots but imagine they look beautiful like you say. 😀
Combined with the Little Lime, the color looks amazing. You’ve convinced me. I’m chucking my hardy geraniums that like to seed and don’t bloom as long.

I am growing 'Rozanne' in zone 4b! I just bought another plant for my east-facing front garden I'm renovating. I love how it travels among other plants and trees. When water beads up on the blooms and backlit with sun they look like jewels. You've inspired me to plant a 'honeydew' echinacea (waiting on it from Brecks) next to this beautiful plant. I loved seeing yours making "friends" with Little Lime hydrangea.

Your description of the flowers looking like jewels when backlit is perfect! 💙 And I love the combination you're doing to do with the Honeydew Echinacea -- I think the color combo as well as them intermingling will be so pretty. I have two Echinacea I just planted in our back yard, since that's the only place 90% safe from the rabbits. I don't have Rozanne back there, but maybe you're now inspiring me to add some! 😉

I just picked up a 'White Swan' coneflower (replacement for one that mysteriously died). Gotta get that in the ground. It's so hot and dry in Minneapolis. I can't keep planted plants moist enough. Crispy critters

I wish I had known about Roxanne before I planted so many Biokovo. It has the same qualities except the long bloom time. I’ve been considering what I should plant to replace the strawberries - Roxanne might be a good candidate although it might be too dry in that spot. I didn’t know they like so much moisture. Could be why some of my HG are not doing as well as others. This video was very informative.

Regarding rabbits--- I use those wire mesh wastebaskets from Walmart or Dollar Tree. I cover young perennials in Spring until the plant reaches the top of the covering. Usually it has outgrown its most " tasty" stage for many rabbits. Only baby rabbits seem to munch on mature plants....? It saves me a lot of headache! I don't particularly enjoy the look of the baskets all that much but when they are removed I feel pretty sure many rabbits have moved on to someone else's garden.😂😅😂😅
Yes, I use chicken wire cloches -- similar to the mesh wastebaskets you use. Great idea! 👍And I feel the same way: it may not look picture perfect, but my plants are protected! And yes, I love when rabbits find elsewhere to dine -- hopefully they get better service than I'm providing! 😂

Tripled in price? Ouch! 😯 But I know what you mean when you find such a perfect plant! I’ve had good results ordering online, even though plant sizes will be smaller, the prices are less expensive. Bluestone Perennials is one of my favorites. Maybe that’s an option for you. 👍💜

This was so thorough! You hit on everything. In my situation I have to cut them right back after the first flush or they don't look the best. I can attest to the different colour shades. I got a clump given to me and over the years they have been divided and distributed. One year I noticed some were more purple and others more blue even though they came from same mother plant. I've wondered if it had to do with soil pH. Happy 1st day of Spring 🌱🌷

In my case, these weren’t divided but I noticed during the season they seem to alter color whether it’s from the sun - or like you suggest maybe soil pH. However, since Rozanne can grow and keep her color in most soils, I wonder. I seem to see both shades on the same plant. grew this one many years ago in different home. been looking for 2 yrs in new home. if i can't find it locally, will have to submit to online ;(. i highly recommend 'Ana Folkard'. grew her in Seattle, WA. hot pink fushia w/ black eye. she loved to ramble far from home, but sadly never seeded anywhere. i would've happily put up with weeding over seeding. Not sure if she would like it in the southl. they were my 2 fav. geranium and miss them terribly. i bought 5 'Kaya' from costco (longwood garden). one survived, my fault. now maybe not one, its been really cold here in the south!! (i know it won't hold a candle to Rozanne.

I’m not sure where you are located but I see that Digging Dog Nursery Online - located in California - has these varieties available. I hope you can add some to your garden! 😀 PS - I edited this to add that I see there is a high $$ minimum order for Digging Dog, which I didn’t notice before suggesting them to you.
People doing these videos need to get the grow zone info out at the beginning in the title or pull down description. I'm a zone 4 and hate watching a video on perennials and shrubs that won't grow in my area.

I have planted several Rozanne plants - yet to take off, but will be pleased if they perform as well as yours! What is the pink flower at time stamp 6:36?
Hi Helen -- the pink flower is Starship Deep Rose Lobelia, which is a variety of Cardinal Flower. It's a wonderful perennial, and right now here in mid-October the burgundy leaves are very pretty even without any more flowers. It definitely looks to me like Rozanne is very similar to Bloom Me Away, which seems to be a newer variety available in Europe but not in the United States. I know that Rozanne is a sterile plant, which is why it blooms so long. On the Bloom Me Away breeder's website, there was no mention of it being sterile, but the flower shape, color and bloom time all seems almost identical. Azure Rush is a beautiful plant called a "sport" of Rozanne -- meaning it came from the Rozanne plant. It is a smaller size than Rozanne, but you won't notice that for a few years, as early on they will appear similar in size. The color is slightly lighter than Rozanne as well. I hope this helps! These are all lovely long-blooming perennials to grow!
This is the second time I watched your video on Rozanne. I have one and did very well. But this year it’s not. It looks wilted and turning yellow. I water it and atlas it doesn’t perk up. Any suggestions??
Hmmm.... Let me see if I can help! What has your weather been like this year? Sometimes Rozanne can get a little baked in extreme heat. Another possibility is too much water from rainstorms (which can drown the roots) OR too little water, so the plant has been thirsty. I think the first step is to consider if your weather this year (especially heat waves, extreme heat and amount of rain/watering) has been different than last year.
Well maybe I can help! 🙂 Depending on the size of the plants when first planted, it does take perennials a few years to fully come into their full glory. (There's a garden saying that the first year plants sleep, the second year they creep, and the third year they leap -- meaning first the roots are getting established, then the plant begins to fill out during the second year for the third year of a really noticeable growth and flowering increase.) Rozanne doesn't like to dry out, but if you do notice some brown tendrils during the Summer, you can gently pull those out by hand or snip them off the main plant. During the heat of the Summer, Rozanne may slow down with her blooming if grown in hotter gardening zones -- but -- she will begin blooming again as the weather returns to more seasonal temperatures. Cutting her back might be a solution, then continue to water making sure her leaves aren't drying out, in order to encourage a new flush of blooms. And yes, too much shade will impact the amount of flowers -- Rozanne needs sun. However, I also have some of mine in dappled sun/shade -- these bloom nicely though not nearly as much as ones that get more sun. Morning sun is better than afternoon sun, if that's possible to give them more sun. I hope this helps? 💙

I live in 9b. No, Roxanne won’t grow here. Our Florida sun is way too hot for any geranium after May 1st. Our geraniums in Florida look best in Feb/Mar/Apr.

It has a similar height and spread, and beautiful blue flowers. Same care involved. Johnson’s Blue blooms from mid Spring into mid Summer, where as Rozanne will keep blooming well into the Fall. Johnson’s Blue also will naturalize over time as it produces seedlings. I hope this helps! 💙

Hi Laura -- no it isn't invasive -- although I love Rozanne so much I almost wish she was! 😆All of the growth each year will come out from the very center of the original plant you planted, instead of popping up in random places. Very well behaved plant!
@@57colliegirl You're smart not to remove perennial growth until Spring! 👍 I tidy up a bit more in my front yard -- where all of my Rozanne is located -- since it faces the street. Otherwise I'd leave even the dead long stems until the Spring. But leaving all of the leaves helps protect the crown especially during cold Winters. (Not to mention all of the insects that now have a nesting spot for the Winter too!) 🐝💛

Tripled in price? Ouch! 😯 But I know what you mean when you find such a perfect plant! I’ve had good results ordering online, even though plant sizes will be smaller, the prices are less expensive. Bluestone Perennials is one of my favorites. Maybe that’s an option for you. 👍💜

Great video ~ as always. I have max frei which looks quite a bit similar just more rosy to bright pink. I love the way you talk about this plant as "her" ... glad to know I'm not the only one that does that! I have quite a few her and hims in my garden. 😉

This was so thorough! You hit on everything. In my situation I have to cut them right back after the first flush or they don't look the best. I can attest to the different colour shades. I got a clump given to me and over the years they have been divided and distributed. One year I noticed some were more purple and others more blue even though they came from same mother plant. I've wondered if it had to do with soil pH. Happy 1st day of Spring 🌱🌷
Thanks Roxanne! 💜 That’s interesting about different clumps possibly producing some flowers more violet and some more blue. In my case, these weren’t divided but I noticed during the season they seem to alter color whether it’s from the sun - or like you suggest maybe soil pH. However, since Rozanne can grow and keep her color in most soils, I wonder. I seem to see both shades on the same plant. Either way, the flowers are lovely! 😀 Happy Spring and hope your snow begins to melt soon! 🌞

grew this one many years ago in different home. been looking for 2 yrs in new home. if i can't find it locally, will have to submit to online ;(. i highly recommend 'Ana Folkard'. grew her in Seattle, WA. hot pink fushia w/ black eye. she loved to ramble far from home, but sadly never seeded anywhere. i would've happily put up with weeding over seeding. Not sure if she would like it in the southl. they were my 2 fav. geranium and miss them terribly. i bought 5 'Kaya' from costco (longwood garden). one survived, my fault. now maybe not one, its been really cold here in the south!! (i know it won't hold a candle to Rozanne.
Hi LainyJane, I’ve had my eye on Ana Folkard for awhile, so thank you for the recommendation as I love to hear what other gardeners enjoy growing! 💜 I wasn’t familiar with Kaya, and just Googled her and wow what a beautiful geranium! I’m not sure where you are located but I see that Digging Dog Nursery Online - located in California - has these varieties available. I hope you can add some to your garden! 😀 PS - I edited this to add that I see there is a high $$ minimum order for Digging Dog, which I didn’t notice before suggesting them to you.
People doing these videos need to get the grow zone info out at the beginning in the title or pull down description. I'm a zone 4 and hate watching a video on perennials and shrubs that won't grow in my area.

I have planted several Rozanne plants - yet to take off, but will be pleased if they perform as well as yours! What is the pink flower at time stamp 6:36?
Hi Helen -- the pink flower is Starship Deep Rose Lobelia, which is a variety of Cardinal Flower. It's a wonderful perennial, and right now here in mid-October the burgundy leaves are very pretty even without any more flowers. Is it similar to bloom me away and azure rush?
It definitely looks to me like Rozanne is very similar to Bloom Me Away, which seems to be a newer variety available in Europe but not in the United States. I know that Rozanne is a sterile plant, which is why it blooms so long. On the Bloom Me Away breeder's website, there was no mention of it being sterile, but the flower shape, color and bloom time all seems almost identical. Azure Rush is a beautiful plant called a "sport" of Rozanne -- meaning it came from the Rozanne plant. It is a smaller size than Rozanne, but you won't notice that for a few years, as early on they will appear similar in size. The color is slightly lighter than Rozanne as well. I hope this helps! These are all lovely long-blooming perennials to grow!
Do you think it will do well in North Carolina with our heat and humidity? Also, will she do well in dappled shade in a deciduous forest?
This is the second time I watched your video on Rozanne. I have one and did very well. But this year it’s not. It looks wilted and turning yellow. I water it and atlas it doesn’t perk up. Any suggestions??
Hmmm.... Let me see if I can help! What has your weather been like this year? Sometimes Rozanne can get a little baked in extreme heat. Another possibility is too much water from rainstorms (which can drown the roots) OR too little water, so the plant has been thirsty. I think the first step is to consider if your weather this year (especially heat waves, extreme heat and amount of rain/watering) has been different than last year.
I can show you some geranium Roxanne that quits blooming in the summer. Mine must be getting additional shade.
Well maybe I can help! 🙂 Depending on the size of the plants when first planted, it does take perennials a few years to fully come into their full glory. (There's a garden saying that the first year plants sleep, the second year they creep, and the third year they leap -- meaning first the roots are getting established, then the plant begins to fill out during the second year for the third year of a really noticeable growth and flowering increase.) Rozanne doesn't like to dry out, but if you do notice some brown tendrils during the Summer, you can gently pull those out by hand or snip them off the main plant. During the heat of the Summer, Rozanne may slow down with her blooming if grown in hotter gardening zones -- but -- she will begin blooming again as the weather returns to more seasonal temperatures. Cutting her back might be a solution, then continue to water making sure her leaves aren't drying out, in order to encourage a new flush of blooms. And yes, too much shade will impact the amount of flowers -- Rozanne needs sun. However, I also have some of mine in dappled sun/shade -- these bloom nicely though not nearly as much as ones that get more sun. Morning sun is better than afternoon sun, if that's possible to give them more sun. I hope this helps? 💙
@@GardenSanity thank you! They are first year plants. I planted them and they bloomed for a month then quit. I was sad because I thought maybe I stunted the roots or somethings they are still green and look healthy, so maybe next year they will take off and be beautiful!

In the video at minute 3:07 you’ll see the zone requirements, which are 5 through 8, so Rozanne won’t do well in zone 9B. Sorry!
I live in 9b. No, Roxanne won’t grow here. Our Florida sun is way too hot for any geranium after May 1st. Our geraniums in Florida look best in Feb/Mar/Apr.
@@carolyncook3611 I found it at local nursery here in 9b (SF Bay Area), and I am trying it out. So far it's thriving as we've had milder climate this spring. Hoping it survives the summer heat though.

How does this compare to Johnson’s Blue? 🤔
It has a similar height and spread, and beautiful blue flowers. Same care involved. Johnson’s Blue blooms from mid Spring into mid Summer, where as Rozanne will keep blooming well into the Fall. Johnson’s Blue also will naturalize over time as it produces seedlings. I hope this helps! 💙

I don't remove ANY perennial dead growth until Spring. It helps the plant in many ways to leave it until then. You produced an EXCELLENT video. I am tuning in again for your expertise and interesting presentations!! Thank you!
Hi Laura -- no it isn't invasive -- although I love Rozanne so much I almost wish she was! 😆All of the growth each year will come out from the very center of the original plant you planted, instead of popping up in random places. Very well behaved plant!
@@57colliegirl You're smart not to remove perennial growth until Spring! 👍 I tidy up a bit more in my front yard -- where all of my Rozanne is located -- since it faces the street. Otherwise I'd leave even the dead long stems until the Spring. But leaving all of the leaves helps protect the crown especially during cold Winters. (Not to mention all of the insects that now have a nesting spot for the Winter too!) 🐝💛
