I came to learn about herd immunity but vaccines are always mention. I read that the Spanish had herd immunity towards smallpox so i assume herd immunity isnt necessarily related to vaccines. Herd immunity is basically some people that are immune to a virus due to having the infection once OR cause of a vaccine, right?

@Michael T ~ As a Virologists you should be able to discern between a Vaccine and an Experimental Synthetic Substance substituting for a Vaccine which is what the so-called SARS2-COVID2 Elixirs are.

@@lightningfun6486 @@lightningfun6486 unless it's leaky -- the immune system works by storing pathogens as electromagnetic signatures in memory B cells - the mRNA treatments being used right now for SARS-COV-2 innoculate people against 1 out of 20 proteins that make up the virus (natural infection provides the memory B cells with the EM signature of all 20 proteins)
Mutations happen all the time (you're slightly different from your parents right?), in order to evade the level of innoculation that the mRNA treatments provide, someone only needs to come into contact with a strain that has a slight change to the protein it provides protection against (delta is mutated at the furin cleave site that the spike protein rests on) - so these new mRNA vaccines can be evaded quite easily by delta, and alpha (the dominant strain before delta) had it's evolutionary stable strategy (Nash equilibrium) disrupted by the vaccines.
You remember how influenza disappeared right? Just poof -- it got outcompeted by SARS-COV-2 alpha, and now we put up a barrier to alpha's success, by training people's immune system with the EM signature of the D614G S1/S2 pair (alpha's spike protein), and now delta is outcompeting it, even within the vaccinated

@@tyler3876 the immune system works by storing pathogens as electromagnetic signatures in memory B cells -- the mRNA treatments used for SARS-COV-2 innoculate against 1 protein of 20 that make up the virus - 20 proteins worth of EM signature is more comprehensive protection than having only 1 protein's worth of EM signature, ergo, immunity earned through infection provides broader protection
I'm not advocating for people to get infected, covid-19 is a very serious disease, but I think people should know this - those who have been infected have very broad protection
Delta by the way has a mutated spike protein - the EM signature of alpha's spike and deltas spike are different - the rest of delta (the other 19 proteins) are the same as alpha - being infected with alpha gives you very comprehensive signatures to create antibodies to fight delta, meanwhile, in order for the mRNA treatments to work, you need to encounter alpha, and only alpha, or some strain at least that has the D614G S1/S2 pair -- Denmark and the UK are the two countries that are sequencing the positive tests they're getting, and they're seeing that 98% of positive cases which are genomically sequenced are of the delta and sub delta variants
In essence, alpha is not circulating any more, it has been outcompeted by delta because the evolutionary stable strategy for alpha was disrupted by the vaccines
The vaccines DO work, but... Only against viruses with the D614G spike protein
The reason delta so easily took it's place is because of how similar it is to alpha -- it just has the mutated spike, other variants like mu and lambda, (and probably soon to be nu) are "double mutants" - they're less closely related to alpha, and therefore got outcompeted by delta because it was already highly adapted for the role, at least moreso than mu lambda and nu
Previously, vaccines typically used an inert virus, which would let your immune system see all the proteins that make it up
If you'll recall, we used to get flu shots every year, and those shots had to be designed with how the virus had mutated each year -- sometimes they got it wrong, BUT since influenza mostly was the same, regardless of variant (kinda like how alpha and delta SARS-COV-2 share 19/20 proteins) people who got the shot usually had pretty broad protection, for the same reasons listed in the first paragraph of this post
All of this being said, the mRNA treatments probably still provide some protection against delta - a close match is maybe better than no match; however, this protection most likely won't last forever (as we can see, the protection seems to wane over time) and different people's immune systems have different tolerance levels for what it considers to be an EM signature match

@@DoomTrooperTV ever had a water balloon fight? You know how you can wear a raincoat and be pretty much dry? What if everyone else surrounds you with water balloons and water hoses? Probably still going to get wet right?
The water balloons are covid and the raincoat is the vaccines. They aren't 100% - they only tell your body what to look out for. If your body gets overwhelmed you'll still get sick.
That is why is is *very important* for as many people as possible to get the vaccine, so there are fewer balloons flying around.
