just curious - if this is the best single (song) ever what is your least favourite? - as I regard this as pretty dire (you know the kind of standard John-Peel type bands from the 1980's)
Martin Black agreed there is something particularly irritating about Stipes voice - "Shiny happy people" is in my top three along with "hit me with your rhythm stick" by Ian Dury at number one - the list would go on to include EVERYTHING by Jimi Hendrix, Patti Smith & Stevie Wonder
I'm reading this fab coming of age book about Scottish friends who go to a punk festival in Manchester at the G-Mex (in '85 or '86), and everything that happens in their young lives after that weekend. It's "Mayflies" by Andrew O'Hagan. This song was a request by one of the Scottish lads in the book at a Manchester club called the Hacienda-I wonder if it was real like the G-Mex? I did the 80's in the Southern US and pretty much missed punk and post-punk-shame on me!!!
I was 13 when it came out and I bought it in it's little poster sleeve. I still have it and it's as great as it ever was. Cannot remember where I heard it, possibly on Annie Nightingale as I loved her show around that time. Possibly John Peel.
Bought this out of Avalanche. Hibs versus Rangers at Easter Road. Got the supporters bus through. Everyone else went to the pub, and I spent 2 hours in the record shop being weird. I never really did fit in with football culture, even if I do love the game.
@@alanireland5819 Would spend about £100 on music monthly, 90s/early-00s. Local (Greenock) had nothing. I'd do Glasgow 3-4 times a year (Missing/Avalanche, not Pastel, a rip-off). Supporters bus to Gorgie/Easter Rd, Avalanche. Pittodrie, One-Up. Aberdeen got too dangerous due to their casuals. Our bus opted for a Stonehaven pub. Tee-total, Stonehaven, Sunday, 3hrs. Enough to have you read every word of the Sunday Post!
LYRICS..... Oh Candyskin uh Candyskin Who'd've guessed your luck You don't want a velvet skin Oh Candyskin uh Candysuck You don't have to beat me to Make me know you're there You just might have to beat me to Make me know you really care Oh Candyskin uh Candyskin Who'd've guessed your luck You don't want a velvet skin Oh Candyskin uh Candysuck It happens when you're not satisfied And just don't wanna say You just press a button inside And make the noises anyway Oh Candyskin uh Candyskin Who'd've guessed your luck You don't want a velvet skin Oh Candyskin uh Candysuck

The Hacienda was absolutely real! Happy Mondays performed there frequently, as did the Stone Roses and Oasis.
Me as well😂. That's why I am here

I bought this from Avalanche records in 1986 or 87. Cost me 6 quid. Which was a lot then.

Oh Candyskin uh Candyskin
Who'd've guessed your luck
You don't want a velvet skin
Oh Candyskin uh Candysuck
You don't have to beat me to
Make me know you're there
You just might have to beat me to
Make me know you really care

You don't want a velvet skin
Oh Candyskin uh Candysuck
It happens when you're not satisfied
And just don't wanna say
You just press a button inside
And make the noises anyway
Oh Candyskin uh Candyskin
Who'd've guessed your luck
You don't want a velvet skin
Oh Candyskin uh Candysuck
The old boys at Sabotage Times used to live this very much. Also the band the Fire Engines became, Win, were pretty damn groovy too.
Sheer brilliance the oriental strings and drums wow
