When I was a kid, many, many years ago, my bicycle was my freedom. Sadly, that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. I still ride, and still enjoy it. Great video. 😎

Well, I want to be Mary-Jo when I grow up. In the meantime, I'll have to think about how I might encourage more of this in Boulder. Thanks for sharing!

Maura, yes! Give me a reason to come back to Boulder for documenting :)

In Germany we have a bike school in the third or fourth grade. At the end the kids get a „driver license“ for bikes. The problem with our system is, kids are due to insurance issues not allowed to ride their bikes to school till they got the license. I rode my bike with my son to kindergarten and then he had to stop use the bike 3 years. 🙄

I live in that typical suburban environment where cars rule. I'd love to see more of this in practice - however, adequate infrastructure (physically separated) is a must in busy and congested corridors.

I also (now) live in that place but my kids still need to bike around the neighborhood safely and when they start driving.

I went to something like this near Lois Lowry park as a kid in Tampa. It was a million years ago so I don't know if they still have them but I remember it to this day.

Loved your video. Had lunch with Mary-Jo today. Looking to do more Traffic Gardens here in Charlotte. We have one at the Arbor Glen Recreation Center. We need more.

Love it! I know Arvada CO installed a learning center under the guidance of a former traffic engineer working for the City. Did Aurora also do something similar? Bicycle Colorado does a safe routes to school program but their reach is too short and the course too brief due to funding and other constraints. What I do know is that learning programs and environments are apart and few in between. Thanks for sharing this, Arleigh.

"Safety Town" is what it was called when I was a kid. I don't remember where it was set up, but I remember wheeling around safety town as a little kid. It was supposed to teach us how to cross streets and driveways (biking on the street wasn't a thing back in the early 80's especially for youngsters) and we pretended to drive like people in cars, but were on our bikes.

Traffic gardens are a derivative of Safety Towns. It’s focus is strictly on traffic flow to gain a better sense for it which enables you to understand it. When you know how to flow in traffic, safety increases exponentially. It’s just traffic, Safety Town covers so much more and are still in operations all over the states. There’s one in Greensboro, NC.

I think neighborhood churches could have an underutilized resource in their parking lots that'd be good places for traffic gardens.

Andy, I SO AGREE! I was just telling someone that this weekend. We could use them 5 days a week and not be in their way at all.

I did something similar. With the Cub Scouts. We called it a bicycle rodeo. We did it with chalk.

We covered our chalk lines with duct tape to make the lines shine :-)

I love everything about this. I’d love to create one in our community!
