Losing the centre core is damaging because its the spine of the whole carrier. I'm pretty sure Elon is mad because they can't study it for future missions.
Yup it was confirmed by Musk himself. Turns out only one of the engines needed for landing ignited when 3 was needed. It ran out of the ignition fuel needed to light the 3 needed engines. It also did some damage to the droneship. The shrapnel from the crash destroyed 2 of the droneships engines.
Since they already know why the engines didn't relight I think they know how to correct that going forward. But like Ben said, they got plenty of telemetry from it to evaluate it.
What I read was that the core stage ran out of TEB (Triethylboran) which is used to refire the engines. So only one engine fired. Probably the best launch noise at KSC since the shuttle.
I was at the Saturn V/ Apollo area watching this. I must say this 360 cam captures the launch in a way that portrays the experience near perfectly. The clarity of the burn though, in real life, is brilliant. You gotta see it for yourself. It's like an orange star in daylight... No rocket just a brilliant flame. Thanks for sharing this man! And the two boosters with their initial slow down burn coming back was a thing of beauty. Just light. Two crisp burning stars falling slowly. And when you look at them knowing they are rocket boosters coming in to land.... I cried. Thats all.
This was probably one of the best videos I've seen of the launch. The SpaceX coverage never really gives you an idea of the path the rocket flies. This really opened that view up and gave me a better idea of where it goes and the overall flight path. Thanks for sharing this! -Brian
Cool, like really cool, wish i could have been there. Actually shed a tear when watching the stream so live would have been amazing. As i mentioned earlier on your TED talk, I'm a photographer (stills/vid), an external wireless mic would have done wonders here. I'm so glad i am alive during this age, space is right there now.
Thanks so much for this Tim, with headphones and a Google Cardboard viewer I think it's going to be the closest I could get to being there. I watched the live stream on Tuesday and it was incredible, fully immersive in this one though actually gave me goosebumps!
Thank you Tim for the 360 video! Really sucks that you had so much cloud cover though... Jetty Park had pretty clear sky and the booster return was spectacular, my camera wasn't good enough to film it though. I think you should do a 360 at Jetty next time. The crowd was big, but respectful, and the view (after the berm) was perfect. Separation, Boost back and descent was clearly visible with the naked eye.... Reserve a pavilion though so your guaranteed entrance (cost me $45 with parking at the pavilion).
Tim that had to be a hot day in your suit! I know I got a bit sunburnt, I got to watch from about 100 yards to your left on the other side of the Turn Basin. I thought I saw you over there, that suit is pretty unique and stands out!
Tim, from Saturn V center we could see booster sep, booster reentry burn and freefall all the way to landing burn all with the naked eye, somthing i wasn't expecting! The boosters falling in sync was a sight to behold, still not over it. The couple clouds seemed to have bad timing from different locations, how was your view?
That's a very nice video, of course the image quality is low so it's not for watching the lift off or landing, but I got a nice impression of how it would feel if I were in Florida on the D-day.
It's a tie on what I find more envious: That you got to see FH fly or all the people standing around in short sleeves and not even a hint of snow anywhere.
For great audio recorded from atop the VAB (just over Tim's left shoulder) check out ua-cam.com/video/ImoQqNyRL8Y/v-deo.html Headphones capable of good base response are a must. I'm not trying to promote SED, but it's just awesome to hear how loud it would've been from this spot for Tim. And good audio is hard to find. Cheers!
Yea, the sound in the video above is really clipped and distorted. I imagine with a better mike it would have sounded more distinct and similar, if not louder to this shuttle launch. Turn up the sound! ua-cam.com/video/NGJV0P_r1Rs/v-deo.html
Next time you go to a launch / landing, you should bring along a recorder that doesn't (need to) attenuate the sound when things get loud. Even the binaural recording from earlier did this. I'm endlessly surprised that nobody has done these launches justice yet in the audio department. You could be the first!
Because my footage of said things will be TERRIBLE compared to SpaceX’s... I’m mostly just shooting my and other people’s reactions for the video I end up making
asking the real questions now (for the flate. and others)... do rockets produce chemtrials as well? why only from a certain altitude(at which water freezes)? cool video XD
Which part? Don’t worry. I had 5 cameras running. No way did I have them all covered 😉 besides my footage is always going to be so much worse than SpaceX’s so I’ll just pull theirs.
I think CF is referring to the landing of side-boosters; just when they appear you react enthousiastic and block a clear view from the camera to these boosters.
Hey there I was wondering who was recording on the 360 camera, now that slider on the ground will be all lens flare from the Sun won't it? Great stuff!
There's space for 20 thousand people in that area behind you. Why don't they let people stand there? Why only allow 10 journalists? Is it deemed too close and dangerous area for the general public?
Charbax The launch viewing is run for profit by Delaware North, who runs the KSC Visitor Center. So a launch area like this that used to be accessible to the public for a few dollars now costs $300 up. Personally, I went to Playalinda Beach and had the same view while telling Delaware North to go fornicate themselves.
That's a mistake, and is kind of criminally stupid. Elon Musk should demand this stop. And people should be able to get good viewing spots for free just register interest beforehand using the official SpaceX app. If too much demand then simply allocate tickets to people who answer SpaceX trivia questions correctly in quick time with not enough time to check correct answers online etc. Or they could auction some of the spots through the app too. Having this much empty viewing space is insanely stupid.
I have no idea what I am supposed to see here. Al I see is a bunch of guys with cameras on a field who get startled by a loud crack? Is there anything else happening on screen? Watched it two times now, I have no Idea where to look, on what to focus :)
Great video ! The rocket give-away the page said it was taken down... But do you have a Full Size mode to send to me ? Any plastic model kit out there for the Falcon Heavy ? did you have a Telephoto camera running ? tjl
The InstaPro360 really let you down here Tim. Could the file be corrupt you think? Was only uploaded in 4k, when we know that camera does 8k. Great work though, I'm sure you'll work the bugs out. I think next step is to sync your lav mic to the 360.
I’ve got a lot of work to do with all the other cameras and such. It is in 8k just make sure your browser is in 8K, but yeah we’ve still got a ways to go before 360 cameras are more than a gimmick but this is the best one I could find.
The nice thing about the 360 cam is it gives you a better frame of reference. Zooming in is nice But you loose the sense of where in the sky the rocket is. Some camera angles make it look like it is curving back down. Good Job Tim!
👂HIGH / LOUD VOLUME WARNING!! 👂-: Excited guy around the 1:00 minute mark screams 🗣📢"OMG" several times, right near (into) the microphone! PS: I'm not having a 'shot' at the excited guy, heck if I was there I probably would've screamed louder than the rocket! ~I just want to pre-warn people for the comfort of their ears... ✌😉
I've been eyeing this 360 camera for my own work and I gotta say I'm not really all that impressed for a $3500 360 camera. I watched this in 4k on a 5k iMac and it looks potato'y. Plus the stitching looks awful (ie, look at your hands during the launch). I'm not sold on this thing, gonna pass. Cool video though!
I was in Titusvile on the river front some 12 miles away and I could see the boosters quite clearly as they landed (and I managed to find them on their reentry burn), but this vid on high quality you could hardly see them, so not a ringing endorsement of this camera in definition, though it's still cool in it's own right. That said I can not wait for a Night launch. Talking to an acquaintance of mine and he mentioned that their was in the range of 100,000 watching it live.
well this is a 360 camera, not a telescope. it isn't meant to give you a clear view of the takeoff and landing. it's meant to give you a look at the atmosphere of watching the launch. there are a million better videos of the actual takeoff and landing. my comment on the quality didn't have to do with that, i wasn't even looking for the takeoff and landing, i was just looking at the video/stitching quality itself for one of the more premium 360 cameras out there.
natarem well everyone else was looking for the takeoff and landing. That was the point of the video, without that the atmosphere of watching the launch isn’t all that cool. If we can’t see the same stuff the people there are able to it’s kind of pointless. No disrespect to Tim of course, I certainly appreciate the effort, I’d just agree that 360 is not there yet, hopefully by the time BFR flies it’ll be much better and we really do need people still buying this overpriced soon to be outdated 360 equipment so the companies can afford to further innovate.
im pretty sure the center core crashed in the ocean is Elon Musk 's way of dropping mic
Ran out of igniter fluid. Should have taken it to Jiffy Lube.
Since they already know why the engines didn't relight I think they know how to correct that going forward. But like Ben said, they got plenty of telemetry from it to evaluate it.
TheAtom actually Elon musk said in the conference that getting the side boosters back was more important because of the new grid fins.
This method sure makes tracking a lot easier! There's zero chance of losing the rocket out of frame.
Apart from Tim standing in the way ;)
Not better if you can't zoom in though.
I've seen zoomed-in shots of rockets that completely lost the rocket.
You can zoom.. unfortunately the resolution doesn't hold up for long if you do.. =P
That japanese camera crew... funny "sonic boom" reaction.
To help people skip to important parts.
Lift off 0:55
Landing 8:45
Thorgon Cross it’s all important.
True, just some more then other bits.
What I read was that the core stage ran out of TEB (Triethylboran) which is used to refire the engines. So only one engine fired.
Probably the best launch noise at KSC since the shuttle.

i was thinking 'good camera position lol' then i realized its a 360 video :P
first one i see on yt, great job!
This was probably one of the best videos I've seen of the launch. The SpaceX coverage never really gives you an idea of the path the rocket flies. This really opened that view up and gave me a better idea of where it goes and the overall flight path. Thanks for sharing this!

watching those 12 pixels move and my ear drums rupture was amazing!
turn to 4k res you numbnut
Constantin Müller I was. On my 4k monitor as well.
Best part of this video is getting to watch your reactions!
Thanks so much for this Tim, with headphones and a Google Cardboard viewer I think it's going to be the closest I could get to being there. I watched the live stream on Tuesday and it was incredible, fully immersive in this one though actually gave me goosebumps!

I know you were really excited and I don’t blame you but you blocked the booster landing ;)
Not from the primary camera.
I can describe it to you without Tim in the way: 10 bright pixels slowly moving downwards until trees block the view
Actually he didn't. By the time he moved in front of the camera the falcons have already touched down.
You can see the small bright pixel at 8:43
9:17 Sonic Boom right on cue! You're awesome bro
Tim that had to be a hot day in your suit! I know I got a bit sunburnt, I got to watch from about 100 yards to your left on the other side of the Turn Basin. I thought I saw you over there, that suit is pretty unique and stands out!
at 9:15 check the Asian guys reaction of the sonic booms.
They are Japanese by the way. すげいな-
Thought I was watching anime
Haha. Why were you looking in that direction during the landing?
because I already seen the video live feed from spaceX channel hehehe, I just want to see the people's reaction.
and they look concerned after the sonic boom, they might have think the rockets have exploded hehehe.
I love what you are doing man, keep it up with those awesome videos!
9:18 Look at how those two birds are affected by the sonic booms!
at what angle?
When looking towards the landing site, left above you.
That was the coolest part, I thought. They both veered the same direction.
This was AWESOME man thanks for doing this!!!
Hats off to Everyday Astronaut! Tim this was great! Technology is wonderful. The 360 view is amazing.
So cool! Saw you doing this live ;)
Been wondering when we'd hear from you! I was there, in the rocket garden. It was freaking fantastic!
Bonus, we saw the reentry burn, had a perfect angle.
Thank you for this incredible video. This make me feel almost there.
Each new video I see makes me even more excited. Great job Tim!
(btw... "Don't Panic!" has been my avatar for 15 years)
Great video!!! I put on my VR goggles and it was like I was standing there next to you!!! Loved it.
I'm sure you had fun getting off Merrit island :P I was in the crowd over near the VAB and it took me 3 hours to get off the island!
AYYEEEE FINALY!!! THE PTERODACTYLS ARE PROUD!
The 360 video quality is getting better and better! I like it.
Wow! It even has a zoom function!
Thank you for recording this!
I just watched it with Oculas Rift. It was like i was standing in the crowed! Well done!
Just wow! 😱
Que Coffe and science aqui tmb?
vc por aqui!^^^
Not sure if this whole 360 degree is that cool. The quality is not there. A+ for effort! Loved the launch.
I think it's really cool if you want to have a perspective of the surrounding area as well and not just a video zoomed in on the rockets
The distance was a problem but the quality of the video was actually pretty good in 4k.
I don't have an 8k monitor. Full HD. But still the quality was way better when I pressed "8k" instead of 720p.
I guess I was little disappointed with the sharpness. Especially when title says 8K. But that is probably combined resolution.
Yeah probably.
Anything on video:
Americans: OH MY GOD OH MY GOD
For great audio recorded from atop the VAB (just over Tim's left shoulder) check out ua-cam.com/video/ImoQqNyRL8Y/v-deo.html Headphones capable of good base response are a must. I'm not trying to promote SED, but it's just awesome to hear how loud it would've been from this spot for Tim. And good audio is hard to find.
Cheers!
I saw that vid yesterday, its absolutely fantastic, its not so much a video as it is an experience!
Yea, the sound in the video above is really clipped and distorted. I imagine with a better mike it would have sounded more distinct and similar, if not louder to this shuttle launch. Turn up the sound! ua-cam.com/video/NGJV0P_r1Rs/v-deo.html
Great job, love your enthusiasm!!
Wow that was just like being there. Thank you so much for making that.
Jonathan Hiatt it was just like being there if I forgot my glasses at home. Lol. It was cool though.
Next time you go to a launch / landing, you should bring along a recorder that doesn't (need to) attenuate the sound when things get loud. Even the binaural recording from earlier did this. I'm endlessly surprised that nobody has done these launches justice yet in the audio department. You could be the first!
Finally I have waited for this!!!!!
During the livestream you stood in front of the launch, and during the 360 you stood in front of the booster landings... *slow claps* ;)
Very cool use of 360!! Is that slider camera on the ground tracking you or just automatically going back and forth??
Great video Tim. Nice to see Vax there too.
You were im front of the camera at the best moment!
Which part? Don’t worry. I had 5 cameras running. No way did I have them all covered 😉 besides my footage is always going to be so much worse than SpaceX’s so I’ll just pull theirs.
Everyday Astronaut at the end.
Everyday Astronaut when the sidebusters were landing.
I think CF is referring to the landing of side-boosters; just when they appear you react enthousiastic and block a clear view from the camera to these boosters.
Yes thats what i mean, not hate love the channel
The dude in the suit (regular, not space) standing in front of the hangar looks like he's vibrating side to side really fast... before the launch.
How to Blow Your Speakers Out in 3...2...1...
Sonic boom! YES!! Thank you so much for this video. Almost like being there :DDD
it's nice that they let people with learning disabilities so close to watch the launch :)
shut up
He's the only true professional there. Everyone on the grass, he's on concrete.
Hey there I was wondering who was recording on the 360 camera, now that slider on the ground will be all lens flare from the Sun won't it? Great stuff!
Thank you for this!!
Does anyone know if someone already posted a 360 degree video of FH? If there isn’t any, then congrats Everyday Astronaut!!!!!
9:18 PETA PLS :( That seagull must've startled so hard :o
haha thats funny xD
Thanks for this! I got the feeling like i was there

I was wondering what that ball was in front of you. I guess the re-entry burn was behind a cloud for you.
shot in 8k but uploaded at 4k
I don’t think the 8K has processed on UA-cam’s end yet still
Watching this in VR makes it feel like I was there for real.
Perhaps it's just me, but for me the video flickers painfully between the full distorted 360 frame, and the processed normal viewing angle... ouch!
Awesome stuff thanks very much.
Did anyone else hear tires screeching right after the sonic booms as though someone was driving past, didn't expect them, and lost control? 😦
This was great. Thanks!
Any plastic model kit out there for the Falcon Heavy ? did you have a Telephoto camera running ? tjl
You must connect a portable fan to your Orange Suit or an A/C Unit ! tjl
no one is gonna watch it in 8k :D but still its there, and thats alot of upload time :D thanks
Wow! I wish he would do more of these...
The InstaPro360 really let you down here Tim. Could the file be corrupt you think? Was only uploaded in 4k, when we know that camera does 8k. Great work though, I'm sure you'll work the bugs out. I think next step is to sync your lav mic to the 360.

Keep innovating dude! Just poked you an email.
The nice thing about the 360 cam is it gives you a better frame of reference. Zooming in is nice But you loose the sense of where in the sky the rocket is. Some camera angles make it look like it is curving back down. Good Job Tim!
Must say this was one exciting day!!! Wow!
I bet all the restaurants and other tourist type industries in the area love Elon and SpaceX. The frequent launches draw people in.
I like how the cloud stream left by the booster rockets looks like a dude sitting on a toilet
Were those guy that behind Dodds (on the right hand side of the laptop) were press from Japan? :)
Thanks man :) that was pretty cool
hmm the audio isnt that good
Is there any public information on the altitude that they fire the first engine on the 1-3-1 side booster landing burn?
Did anybody else notice the bird absolutely redirect when the sonic booms happened?
Tim, can we see the footage of panning ground camera too? Thx
It’ll be coming, do not worry 👍
For your next video how about a static camera location view of paint drying on a concrete block wall? Just about as exciting. 😕
There was almost no one there! Was this such a bad vantage point ?
Most press was on the other side of the big clock or at the causeway. There were actually TONS of people just most of them not right there.
👂HIGH / LOUD VOLUME WARNING!! 👂-: Excited guy around the 1:00 minute mark screams 🗣📢"OMG" several times, right near (into) the microphone! Awesome video. 👍👍👍
Great to see my Japanese folks get hyped so much
Humm, I can only pick a quality up to 4k... is that a typo in the title or is youtube still processing the higher res?
UA-cam may still be processing the 8K version.
Question: What is the blue wall behind you good for?
Can't believe that I was just across the water from ya. :D
The flat screen society won't like this...
This made me very happy
the reaction of the people behind you at 9:17 LOL ha ha
I've been eyeing this 360 camera for my own work and I gotta say I'm not really all that impressed for a $3500 360 camera. I watched this in 4k on a 5k iMac and it looks potato'y. Plus the stitching looks awful (ie, look at your hands during the launch). I'm not sold on this thing, gonna pass. Cool video though!
Good call. I came to the same conclusion. I only rented it. 360 has a ways to go but this is getting closer
I couldn't even see the boosters land. I could barely see the Heavy take off. :(
I was in Titusvile on the river front some 12 miles away and I could see the boosters quite clearly as they landed (and I managed to find them on their reentry burn), but this vid on high quality you could hardly see them, so not a ringing endorsement of this camera in definition, though it's still cool in it's own right. 9:50 Asian guy walks past the crazy guy in the orange suit taking a very wide distance
So amazing thanks for sharing.
Hey Tim, how would you compare the sound intensity level of the F9 vs the FH?
superb reaction from that one seagull
If you additionally had filmed someone doing some magic tricks in the foreground , the video would have reached MONTY PYTHON quality....!!
I would have synced up audio from one of your other sources for this video
I feel like I was at the launch....but I forgot to bring my eyeglasses. Cool video anyway though.
Great video!!! :-)
It’s finally up!!!
Bottle of water right next to spaghetti of wires lmao. Think safer Mr. Astronaut
Bottle of water was empty 👍
