Flashbacks are usually used in cheap and melodramatic way that ruins the story. You're right that Dragon Ball handles it better by not using flashbacks much.

Yep Suzy, this hits hard when yoh warch OG DB, seeing all the charcater we loved for 153 chapters falling one by one to these strong enemies is a lot of emotions that feell worse when you watch OG DB
It still boggles my mind that other reactors start with dbz instead DB. At least with fans who grew up with it had some semblance of dragon ball or started the manga from the beginning. But it's rare to see reactors start with og db first...

I just want to bring this up and I'm a bit late thanks to the holidays, but Tien's attack he used on Nappa was the tri beam cannon. The tri beam cannon takes life force from the user and he drained what was left in him.
The handful of episodes featuring the Z Fighters against Nappa and Vegeta had all of us convinced that Nappa was a blasted UNIT with how well he tanked attacks. Until Goku rolled up.
One thing you forgot raditz did say they were much stronger than him so it wasnt going to be that easy and it never was there were likely to be casualties just shows how strong nappa is and if they are having a very hard time even scratching nappa how cant they even take on vegeta?

What i love about dragon ball deaths is that there is no sad flashback because we already know the characters through the story.
