While not entirely true, the old saying carries a lot of wisdom- I don’t prep because I‘m worried all the time. I prep so I don’t have to be.

The prices will never go down, so what you buy today will save you money in the long run

    • @poisonfortheweak

@@ann-or6ev Very true. I bought simple things like extra socks and underwear a year ago. They’ve since doubled in price while also halving in quantity. Meaning you now only get 1/4 of the same thing for the same price one year later. Wow.
Anything that I can afford now, and that I know I’ll need in the future, I’m going ahead and getting it. It just makes sense.
As you said- whether it be inflation or lack of availability in the future (shortages)... it just makes sense to go ahead and get it. And the reality is it’ll probably be both of those because of supply and demand + inflation.
I’ve been a long term prepper but lately I’ve been stocking up on extra things that are on the “advanced prepper” list like extra chains for my chainsaw, stocking oil for my engines, tools of all kinds, I just got new tires and brakes since I knew that I would need them soon... extra lumber and animal food, etc.
Depends on your level of preparedness, but again- yes, good advice-and I’ll repeat myself again- if you’re going to need it anyway at some point and you have the money, get it now. Just as you said, you’re already saving yourself money and you may not even be able to get it in the near future.

@Rick Christopher Canadian Prepper has said this several times too. He said people spend thousands and thousands of dollars a year on homeowners insurance, car insurance, life insurance.. but won’t spend an extra $500-$1000 on food and water. Talk about “life insurance”, huh?

That’s exactly me! I believe in keeping a 6-12 mo supply of food, household goods and personal care goods. We had a plan for electric outages and a creek/river for water to purify. My husband didn’t like to worry so we planned together and I carried out the logistics. When something occurred, we dealt with it and when the event was over we assessed out successes and failures. He didn’t like the term failure so I changed it to what we learned that we need to change or add, lol. 3-7 days without electricity was just like our yearly mountain top vacations except a different shelter.

After living in Michigan for 57 years, I moved to Texas. Friends and acquaintances laughed at sweaters and coats in my wardrobe and the fact that I used anti-freeze in my automobile. However, when the temps dropped into the low 20s I wasn't the one looking for someone to replace displaced freeze plugs in my engine and missing days at work. I don't believe a person can be overprepared.

"What to do next?" is key. Prioritize and do something over doing nothing. Have a NEED and a WANT list. Of course the NEED items should come first. Prioritize tasks and purchases.

Exactly. I was making such a big list that I started to feel like I'm not going to be able to do it all. Then I realized that I should prioritize according to immediate versus some time down the road, seasonal, etc. I found myself being much more in control and able to make smaller lists accordingly, with ideas of when I will focus on the next list, and the next, etc. It's a lot more doable now.

In my mind what ever happens isn't going to change the fact that you need food, water, shelter, clothing, and security. So focus on those things instead of worrying about what might happen. If you have 2 weeks of supplies, you're much further ahead than most people. Don't stop building on what you have as your budget allows. Even if you are putting only a couple pounds worth of food a week or every other week it will build over time. Don't go into debt, pay off as much debt as you can while building your supplies. Debt is ENSLAVEMENT, break the chains.

Our hideous mainstream media reported, Thursday or Friday, that petrol stations were closed due to shortages of drivers to get fuel to the pumps. They didn't mention that it was only 5 petrol stations in the UK, and therefore started the panic buying, that has resulted in at least 5 petrol stations in our local area to close, and even some of the motorway petrol stations that we passed today had no fuel - they were given supplies as a priority. All manufactured, like alot of issues at the moment.

The air gap alone will help insulation, but, if you can fill the gap between the two with extra clothing that will help even more with insulation. As a bonus, use the gap between the openings as a sally port (don't open the second until the first one is closed) thus minimizing heat loss.

I'm having to remind myself "don't be scared, be prepared".

I grew up hearing about life during the Depression, the Dust Bowl days in Northern Texas and WW2 from my great-grandparents, my grandmother and my mom. Having survived those days they continued to prepare for emergencies/hard times. My kids can’t conceive of those living conditions and are not prepared to cope with emergencies. Last year I started giving gift baskets for birthdays and Christmas that included items for emergencies. I will do the same this year. Because I know my kids are not preparing for a potential emergency I increase the food/supplies to include them.

I have two adult children at home... still young and both autistic. One doesn't concern themselves with what I'm doing and doesn't question it. The other doesn't believe it's ever going to be bad. I then realized that my kids sure had it good. I had a rough childhood living in poverty, going hungry sometimes, one time we had no heat or power in the winter. We used to get government food and powdered milk. Even though I provided a decent life for my kids, I will never forget what my childhood was like and so I'm getting ready for some hard times. My kids will understand when the SHTF. Then they'll be grateful that I prepared.

My kids kind of laugh at me and my husband is somewhat on board but he is the one who continually reminds me to keep my eyes on Christ. I do think if it were just my husband and myself, we would be ok. If our kids and grandkids ended up coming to our place, we definitely need more put aside. So I prepare for them having to come. And if they do, I've already told them not to come empty handed...bring everything they can...food, blankets, water, meds (heck everything they can fit in the vehicle) to add to the supply.

I'll bet once they start stripping their pantries bare, emptying out their medicine cabinets, tool chests, camping supplies, blankets, firearms and archery equipment, etc, they will be surprised how much they already have. Just have them stuff every thing they can into their car before coming over.

We just get used to how things are. I love the planning idea and I am with you, I feel an urgency to get prepared. Why? I don't know. And, that isn't the point. If you "feel" that you should - do it. The basic needs remain the same over the past 40 + years of being an adult. But as I live my life, the details and plans change. When I was a young mother, I needed preps for the kids. When I had a small farm, I needed supplies and backups and emergency plans for my horses and smaller animals and large garden. And as an empty nester and grandmother now in the city with our pensions coming in like clockwork and not messed with so far, my plans and preps have been seriously adjusted again. From year to year I make small changes. Over 5 years, it’s a big change. But the principles remain the same : have what you need to bug in without electricity for a year ; have what you need to survive in the car for 3 weeks longer than what you expect to be in there; carry what you need in a pack or purse to survive at least 3 days beyond what you expect to be away. Have 2 locations you can bug out to. Never remove or double use the emergency supplies from 1 stash to another (example. I wouldn’t take emergency supplies from my car to use in my bicycle panniers. I would buy separate supplies for the bike.). I always need to know what I got and where it is and that it’s there when I need it.

Constantly hearing about the impending doom only adds stress which can only be remedied by being prepared and a sound mind. Part of that sound mind comes from just enjoying life and appreciating what you have.
If I can't have the resources to get what I need in the meantime the next best thing is to try and become more organized.

I think everybody's feeling the sense of urgency especially now me personally when I got long-term food storage I was actually able for once in my life to afford something like that I started to feel a little easier once I also went and got things that I knew could help protect me and my family I felt easier now it's just focused on water canned goods and what little bit of medical supplies that I can afford on a fixed income I go to the Dollar tree I go to the Dollar general store and if they have specials at Walmart or something that I need that's not very expensive I get that too I just buy as I go with what I have but every trip to the store it's water always water and it's always distilled I don't have a lot of room as I moved from a three bedroom to a one bedroom because my children moved out but I am trying to figure out ways in order to make space for what preps I do have and trying to organize them not perfection but just keep them organized a little bit so I know what's what and keep a list of what I got I don't feel as worried as I did before I'm new to this prepping thing as my journey of whatever you want to call awakeness has just happened in the last six years so and I will be 47 next year but for what little I have that I can use to get the things that I need I think I'm doing okay I'm not doing remarkable but I have enough to at least sustain me and if my kids come to the door I have enough for them too so I feel very proud of the things that I have done for what little time I did them in.... The next thing to do is to get a couple of butane burners and a good portion of packaging of butane cans that is my next goal

  • @Karie419

So I’ve been having concerns about losing electricity during a winter storm here in upstate NY. @able880 2 роки тому +1

You can get those butane stoves from Amazon for $20 dollars - I don't think they will ship the butane canisters - you will have to get them at Walmart ect -
if your using it for heat you will use a lot of those canisters so buy as many as you possibly can - they only last 2 hrs on high &4 hrs on low -
it's better if you team up with people that have the knowledge you need
There might be churches that are into prepairedness in your area -
I live in a rural area were power outages are very normal yr round - summer and winter so it's a way of life for us - sort of when Ida came thru - you can survive the heat ok - if your in good health with out A/C -
Cold is harder to survive with out heat - you have to walk around a lot when there is no heat available - to keep your body generating heat -
but there are water pipe problems in homes when they freeze - so it would be better to team up with others that have the knowledge you need - during power outages
There are propain heaters that run off barbeque propane bulk tanks - or kerosene heaters - that can be used in homes also and are safe to use indoors - but as with all fuels other than natural gas it can be pricey -
I worked in the offshore oilfields in the Gulf of Mexico & remote mountain oilfields for decades -
every thing was always off grid - it does take a level of knowledge to make it when the grid is down - in your case you should find otheres or a church to team up with - that have the needed knowledge

You may have to make the additional supplies out of sight and inconvenient to get to. If it's all in your pantry then it's open season. At our house I do my best to tell family to only pull from the kitchen. If something is missing, go get the next case and unpack the whole box into the cupboard. Rotating supplies is essential but you need to have enough ahead that you can build the stock. Involve family in the budget and shopping. I remember when my husband picked up some things from Costco. Poof they went and he was fussing about the money and how fast we consume. This I have known for awhile but finally 😂 had the opportunity to prove it. Involving them in the process will help hopefully.

A professional gets ready for the next incident even before the present incident is mitigated. Getting ready for the next incident even on the way back to the station. If you are a professional. Dear old dad had a complete emergency medical clinic, including surgical equipment (yes, he could use all of it). Even good and water, often cases of C-rations. I used to have a complete battalion aid station in my home (I was in charge of a medical platoon), and at work, which no one else did in my department, . . . in 9/11 everyone came out of the woodwork to feed us, not needing my stockpiled emergency rations when running mutual aid with Arlington County, . . . I carried MRE's for a crew of four for four days. I was raised overseas, often in or near war zones (dad's work: think if Jason Bourne, married, with children). Even without electric power and being snowed in, my wife and family of nine children did well in the Highlands of West Virginia. I carried a full winter survival kit, including cross country skis and snowshoes, so I could make it home after my shift or shifts in a DC area fire department. My boys used their skills in combat, above and beyond Marine Corps training. Dear old dad used his, escaping from the Communist Chinese twice during the Korean War (did you know we weren't supposed to be in Communist China? Gosh, neither did I!) and escaping and evading capture for weeks in the jungles and mountains of Laos about 60 years ago. People come to me when times are bad. For good reason. Many go to my children, now. I'm getting too old and beat up to even care for myself. Ha! True statement: I don't call law enforcement, law enforcement calls me! Know what to do and do it! Don't think it! Look up a genius IQ Swissman, Felix Immler, on UA-cam. He will show you over a hundred ways just to use a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife! And stay comfortable and alive in the wilds. For me, the only reason I will stay alive is to keep others alive. With my very best friend in the final stage of Alzheimer's, I don't see any other reason to stay around unless it's to continue in saving lives. I know where I'm going when I die. I have learned from Western Pacific Islanders, Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern farmers, East African tribesmen, my grampa (born and raised on an Indian reservation in the Pacific Northwest), Shenandoah Valley and West Virginia folk, years as a Boy Scout and Scout leader all over the World, the Dutch Army, the West German Army, the Thai Border Patrol Police, extensive studies in the National Fire Academy, WWII Pacific combat Marines and OSS commandoes, forerunners of today's Special Forces, to include dear old dad, even my mother's people, Illinois farmers! Never stop learning! And remember, people will steal, even kill for what you have, so shut up! Side note: I carry spare "city" clothe so I won't standout in camping or "military" clothe. Everything I have shouts "innocent civilian"! Anything else will get me shit at a distance! Think about it. Look back to Katrina. What the National Guard did and the New Orleans law enforcement officers literally murdering innocent people. And that a hurricane and storm surge. Trust God, not man.

I worked with him for a time in Europe during the Cold War (my German was so good that you did not know I was an American). It was an adventurous life. My parents, my siblings, now my children. I linked my goal zero Yeti batteries in parallel to my flexible solar panels to keep my food in the 12 volt Icecoo cooler cold.. I filtered water from the lake with my Sawyer Squeeze and my Cnoc bag and we slept in our tent. It got down to 35 degrees and I was glad that we had cots an air mattress, 20 degree sleeping bags plus wool blankets and an extra Klimet versa blanket. We just bought a Reliance portable toilet and it was our first time using it and it worked great. I thought of your video this week on the importance of practicing your skills. I can have all these items but I don’t want the first time I use them to be in a panic situation. Each time I camp or backpack, I edit my stuff and add things I realize I need. This time I realized I need a scrubber for dishes. It’s a little thing but it makes clean up easier. I also need to add work gloves. I got a blister chopping wood. We also decided we needed dust pan and small broom to sweep the tent before packing it and a quilted mattress pad to help block cold air from the ground.
For preps, this year we will focus on water. We have 30 days worth and a reservoir near by but I would feel better with two of the large stackable storage containers. Thank you for the video on that because it helped narrow down what we wanted
