A Brief Introduction to Director Rainer Fassbinder

- Rainer Werner Fassbinder was a highly influential German director that was active in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. He was part of the loose movement known as New German Cinema that also included famous directors like Werner Herzog and Wim Wenders, but he definitely has his own unique style.
His major films include Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, The Merchant of Four Seasons, The Marriage of Maria Braun, and The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant.

Hands Down King Of German Cinema. The Decline of German Cinema started after his death.
I would disagree that German cinemas declined after his death. I could name a few films that prove my point.
I don t think so.German cinéma started a new kind of cinema After his death,but it was not a decline AT all! But Fassbinder is my favorite German movie maker ,he s a fantastic genious!
He never was a king, his films are boring and meaningless.
have loved his films since I was 15 and even though Ali wasn't my first of his films it was and remains one of my favorites. The cinematography in tight spaces is so iconic, and that one mirror shot in the shower will be with me till the end. Petra von Kant will allways be closest to my heart, though. the opening shot??
Fassbinder was bisexual to be very specific
A lot of his former female lovers have said that they think he was just gay but just never fully came to terms with it. One of his exes even said something like "He was a homosexual who needed affection from women, it's that simple and it is that complicated."
From what I have read it seems like he had a lot of issues with internalized homophobia, and also had some mysogynistic views. He wanted to be with men but didn't think he could ever have an actual relationship with a man, which is probably why when it came to men he always was with men who were just as self destructive and chaotic as he was.
When it came to women it seemed like he did relate with them more on an emotional level. It's theorized that the old woman in Ali Fear Eats the Soul is actually a stand in for Fassbinder himself. However due to him having some mysogynistic issues he probably couldn't be vulnerable around a woman unless he was in a relationship with her.
IDK I've rambled on enough and also I cannot some up all of Fassbinder's problems because his issues with himself, his sexuality, his views on women, his views of men, his views on religion, his substance abuse, his politics, his views of German society, and a plethora of other things that if put in a book would be the size of one of those 200 year old bibles that weigh about 5+ kilograms on average.
How did Fassbinder inspire Gaspard Noé? Do you mean his first film? But he has the perfect rhythm and little text. Noe is super visual
Noe has cited him as an influence on many occasions.

He is one of the most important filmmakers of the last century. Power is at the heart of much of his work.

In the film "In a Year of 13 Moons," there is a scene that I find unwatchable. I have seen it once.
I assume you mean the slaughterhouse scene. That was one of the most horrific thing I’ve ever seen, definitely never watching that again!
@@kubricklynch Indeed, it is. Everything about it is messed up. The way they casually walk through the slaughterhouse, having a conversation, while it's business as usual all around.
"Fox and His Friends" stands out as a favorite of mine, distinct for its era. It highlights the lack of equality and overall inclusion within homosexual circles at the time. Perhaps a situation that still exists, some would say.

One of the most overrated directors of all time. His movies were a rushed mess and didn't contain any actual heart or deep message. His movies are like a high school project. I have no idea how people like his boring and superficial films. I guess they just want to sound intellectual and politically woke, lol! BS director. QUALITY OVER QUANTITY.
Excellent and FANTASTIC old film and especially all those German actors....(especially Angst essen Seele (fair eats the soul)) pity he died so young. When you understand and speak German, is even more touching the heart., very touching....This old actrice (also the others), also her own character is a great lady.....
boring talking movie that can be watched in the background. In this sense, he was ahead of the generation, because now this is how people watch TV shows.
