I have been looking forward to posting this video for some time. Lürssen yachts have built 11 of the 20 largest yachts in the world, including spectacular vessels such as "DILBAR" and "AZZAM".
At the Monaco Yacht Show last year I had the opportunity to speak with Peter Lürssen himself and learn about his background and his family business.

David, I know when you announced this video was coming, you said you knew it would not get the numbers of the other videos, what a shame! I love these videos, I enjoy seeing the history behind these brands. To keep a yard running for this long is truly amazing. I enjoy hearing about the planning for the future and how they got started in the private yacht business. My thanks to Peter Lurssen for agreeing to this interview, and to you for bringing it to us.

I cannot think of a business that I would rather be involved in than a business that produces some of the most beautiful works of naval architecture that have ever sailed the seven seas. The story behind Lurssen is fascinating. I can imagine how proud the founders of Lurssen would be if they could see the shipyard as it is now in 2022. A superyacht is more than just a boat; it is a masterpiece of naval architecture and a wonder of modern-day engineering. I can only imagine how proud the Lurssen family is of what the yard has achieved.

What an extraordinary and amasing interview. PL is such a down to earth great guy. I wish many more companies had CEO's like him. I can imagine it being a pleasure to be able to work in a company with management consisting of people like him.

I love the simplicity of this gentleman and the passion for his family history. The little details of his life. The way he remembers his family and the happiness of his youth. I love. I wish them to be the first to build a yacht of this type. Thank you David, it's a very great interview, with a very endearing gentleman. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Hi David and Peter. An insight into the heritage and history of Lürssen. His passion for the maritime industry is the use of innovation and technological development in fuel cells and the reduction of carbon emissions. Great video thanks 😊

Love these Lurssen episodes, always something to learn from hearing Peter speak. I do wish you had asked him one more question, when does he think it will be possible to build the first full fuel cell yacht (if there was a client willing to do it).

What a great story and insight to the company, and what a decent well grounded guy that could have approached it as an entitlement but really put in the work and the hours to keep the company driving forward.
I'd love to visit one of the yards and see some of the build stage.
    Great work guys 👏👏👏

The only word for their shipyards, is “breathtaking”. Sadly most of the projects are so confidential it’s difficult to get footage of them.

What a wonderful family history! My only objection was the comment by the young whippersnapper from 1959 describing those of us born in 1956 as old. It is easy to trust Pride in shipbuilding quality from someone born to the industry.

Very interesting, especially when looking at the future. I do have a question though.
Why use Hydrogen and not Sodium Ion Batteries as a clean alternative to fossil fuels on ships?
Compared to Hydrogen, they are much easier to implement and might return more energy per mass when looking at the entire system.
Due to the easy availability of the base resources, they are also much more affordable and less harmful to the environment compared to Lithium Ion Batteries. I assume their energy density does not matter as much on ships compared to cars, phones and planes. They also don’t seem to at risk of explosions or fire.

"Were you born in the ship building industry?". Being a gentleman, he started with the family history, 150 years ago. Me, being and arse, I would just answer "Yes. 4 generations". But that's probably the difference between him and me and why I am listening every word he says with my mouth open.

I respect Mr. Lurssen's professionalism and achievements. Perhaps he or maybe one of the readers here can explain to me the role of photosynthesis in the processing of cO2. Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from CARBON DIOXIDE and WATER. Photosynthesis in plants generally involves the green pigment chlorophyll and generates OXYGEN as a byproduct.
I don't see where the "emissions" of Carbon dioxide are harmful. It is a component of plant food.
Carbon MONOXIDE is poisonous and is emitted from burning carbon-based fuels. Taken in sufficient quantity it is lethal. These are the emissions that must be reduced. Mr. Lurssen's yachts more than likely spew out more carbon monoxide than carbon dioxide. I can support that effort. But cO2? It creates oxygen- air that we breathe... good for all living things.

You can see here that the heads of these companies are thinking hard about how environmental changes will affect them, and what they can do before it hurts them.

I think people in yachting do more for the ocean environment. They raise more money, more awareness and do more to push ideas about preserving the ocean environment. You want to clean up,the oceans, start with fish farms, drag netters and commercial net fishing using gill nets. Let's also eliminate Asian fishing fleets going after sharks for fins, whaling fleets, and commercial boats fishing in protected waters of countries that don't have the resources to go after these boats. If people were able to sell their 30-70 foot boat to the government for a fair price and also get a tax break, those boats could be donated or sold to other countries that lack boats to go after fishermen in their waters. They could sleep on the boat in comfort for long patrols, arm the boats and have cargo space to confiscate nets. You take the 'production manager' as prisoner and he sleeps in the crew area. Those guys are literal slave drivers. Anyways, I'm ranting. But yachting isn't as bad for the ocean as commercial fishing is.
