I weighed in at 288lbs when I found out that I was a type 2 diabetic. Being on a ketogenic diet before and knowing that it was great for diabetics, I started the keto lifestyle again and with my 3 month check up I had lost 60lbs and my A1C went from a 7.9 to a respectable 5.3 I had never seen a doctor so excited for their patient. My doctor had stated that I am no longer a diabetic. Thank you Jesus!

My AC1 was 8.6. I started my Keto Diet on May 8th.................I am a bigger guy. I have spent decades in the gym. My ideal weigh was 205 . My weight went up to 226 relatively quick. I was previously diagnosed as pre-diabetic . My blood sugars went to hell as well as other functions of my liver. The doctors wanted to put me on 6 different medications, which I refused............I went on a healthy Keto diet....I lost 35 pounds in less than 90 days. I kept a good portion of my muscle. The best part is I just took my 90 day blood test . AC1 is 5.4. They told me I could stop the medication. I informed the doctors that I was not taking any medication. Keto works.................................feel better than ever.

Spot on! Great topic & content. My Mom was a type 2, her doctor tried to get her to eat healthy in her 30’s & dump the sugar...had she done it (then on half a pill no needles yet) she would have not needed insulin. Med’s increased because every medication has a side effect. Her health deteriorated drastically. When she passed away from cancer in her late 60’s we gathered tons of sweets from her cupboards. I threw all of them in the trash and it filled two bins. She was skinny, not fat because as you correctly state the more diabetic the more weight you loose. I am not diabetic but had gestational diabetes 22 years ago while pregnant with my oldest son. Thank God, I woke up & changed my ways. I made different lifestyle choices. At first I went to a Nutritionist & Doctor to have blood work done and obtain whatever knowledge they could give me. Later, I started my own health journey & did research to learn more. I’m now almost 20 years past her diagnosis and follow a low carb/Keto diet. I avoid white flour, white sugar (accept natural fruit in limited amounts). It works! Genetic’s do deal us a certain hand but we have a choice how we play the game to win.

Excellent talk :-) I am considered T2 Diabetic. Since I started Intermittent Fasting (IF), usually eating one meal per day, my Blood Sugar has come down to normal levels. I stopped taking Metformin about 2 years ago and take only one medication, but that is to reduce Blood Pressure and has nothing to do with my blood Sugar levels. I also try to follow a Ketogenic Diet. (KD). My Doctor is astonished at the reversal of my Diabetes. My A1C is back to normal levels and I have excellent Cholesterol levels... Many Doctors have tried unsuccessfully to get me to take Statin Drugs. I refuse due to Statins contributing to Diabetes and brain damage... I'll shut up now... Great video - thanks

Thanks for putting this together Thomas, great stuff. Just a quick note of something that I have observed being a Type 1 diabetic on the science based program: the second, and I mean the second, that my BSG goes over a range of 140-160, my bodies ability to sustain ketosis is gone... What I have to do is calculate the amount of carbs precisely and continue to reduce carb counts mathematically so that I can a) hit ketosis from a workout/ingesting of healthy fats and b) supplement BHB salts with maintaining my BSG at a normal level. Just some food for thought, appreciate your insight on a promising lifestyle for T1 and T2 diabetics out there! You rock brother!

Type 2 here in 2017 for 10 years A1C was 10.6, ldl was 293, doc wanted me on metformin, insulin n statin. I refused, went Keto this year, after 3 months A1C was 5.6, ldl 223, doc was shocked but still wants me on statin, so frustrating, at least test me to see my particle size. I remember the nurse I talked to and asked hey I’m trying to exercise and change my eating, I don’t really want to take insulin, she said no you are gonna have this for life, you need it. Also I know most T2 diabetics are known to be more obese but I was not one of them, both my parents have T2 so I think genetics also have a slight role in your chance of getting it as well, but for sure lifestyle change can make it manageable. I’ll also be honest, the first two weeks we were super strict and I had the app to calculate our macros, then I just got annoyed at this extra step so I stopped that and I just went by how I felt. Sometimes my husband and I would go movies and I would have popcorn n butter n a Coke Zero, he would have 3-4 beers then the next day we would be back on Keto. My husband is on Keto and has lost over 40lbs. I’m just saying hey sometimes we wanted a treat, didn’t go super overboard, yet our bodies are so much better at managing carbs now it’s awesome. Also don’t ever take your docs advice as written in stone, do your research, some docs are old school, and push meds like it’s candy. Thanks Thomas, love your channel and have learned so much, it has made all the difference in our journey. God Bless you and your family!!

just because your doctor wants you on statins doesn't mean you have to accept that, statins don't even really work that well, and even less on women. I'm statin resistant as they make me horrible gimped, headaches, bodyaches, can't sleep, terrible neck aches, I just refuse them, I do want to enjoy my life for awhile and not live in constant pain. I am type 2 tried ketogenic and it made my triglycerides and hdl go really high, although it lowered my sugars a bit, but not enough to go off insulin. I seem to be between a rock and a hardplace.

Thanks for your great content Thomas. I’m a T1D who has been following a keto diet and intermittent fasting (and you) for about six weeks now. I’m seeing better control of my blood glucose - although still having many fluctuations that don’t seem to coincide with the timing of food or insulin. I’ve also dropped from around 170 to 155 lbs body weight (6’0”). Although long term the most important thing is my A1C, I’m really interested in knowing how to maximize my diet, fasting, short vs. long acting insulin, etc. to maximize my muscle growth and lose that last bit of stubborn abdominal fat. I haven’t yet found a video that addresses these concerns specifically for a T1D, given that the manual control of insulin is obviously a lot different than in a “healthy” individual. I hope you will consider expanding on this in a video or that another follower can point me in a good direction.

On Memorial day 5/28/18 my blood sugar was 317, even taking Metformin and Victoza injections(plus choleresterol meds). Due to an injury in my arm they did a full body scan and the doc said after looking at the results I had fatty liver. I could no longer stand the cost and aggravation of the prescrips, plus the pain in my feet and feeling of worms crawling around in my calf muscles so I decided to make a change. I started the keto diet and quit taking all my prescrips that day, and as of last week 8/14/18 my blood sugar was 104. In this time I have also lost 30lbs, going from 256 to 226 and dropped from size 38 to 36. I'm 6 foot and setting my goal at around 205-210. Now I can run several hundred feet barely raising my heartbeat or breathing level and when I'm stationary I notice that I am barely breathing at all. I have never been able to sleep on my back before because of apnea but last week I fell accidentally fell asleep on my back and made it through the night without problem.

I forgot to mention that after being on the diet for a while my hunger cravings stopped and I am down to either one or two meals a day. After testing my blood sugar after eating it only jumps up about 15 points, instead of jumping up to 300. I am going to make a visit with my regular doctor in a month or month-and-a-half, but before that I am going to donate blood so they can give me some results ahead of time to let me know how everything has been working out. I am a stocky person and most of my fat was inside my rib cage and intestines and so far on this diet it feels like my internal organs are not being crushed anymore.

For anyone with diabetes dependant on insulin (I'm type 1), make sure you reduce your long acting insulin appropriately. I was playing catch up the first couple weeks and still adjusting in week 3, as i hadn't reduced it enough, and started two late (tteciba has a 3 day lag) and i kept waking up with hypos. Know that when starting on keto, you can reduce you 24hr insulin much more than you might think, and always do it preemptively, rather than chasing your low sugars in the morning and having to treat hypos.
Also, you can eat meat protein and or almonds or avocado for glucose levels to rise, so you dont have to eat sugar, though it is a sloght bit slower, it feel much bette rin some way. I can treat hypos of 3.4mmol/L fine with these foods, only thing is that if its on waking i dont often want to eat straight away.

As a T1D it is really important to track your blood sugars on a keto diet because you tend to develop an insulin resistance eating such small amounts of carbs. If you find yourself to have high blood sugars besides eating almost no carbs and injecting enough insulin you have to immediately stop the keto diet and start eating carbs to bring back your insulin sensitivity. Ketones are the healthier source of energy but combined with high blood sugars they can be life threatening as they will eventually cause ketoacidosis.

Mtkempf696 You need to continue to intermittent fast. Eventually, your morning numbers will come down. It takes time. A liver cleanse also helps. Research dr. Jason Fung. Here is a link to an article he wrote about this.

Same thing happened to me the day that my appendix ruptured. My blood sugar levels went from a normal of 104 up to 269 the next day. The levels would come down during the daytime but every morning they would be high. Makes me wonder if the appendix plays a role in supplying the intestines with beneficial bacteria at night that help control blood sugars.

1:36 I have type 1.5 (LADA) diabetes. It's like a very slow type 1, and is very often mistaken for Type 2, because it takes years to develop. All my doctors kept telling me that losing weight will reverse my type 2 symptoms, so I lost 150 lbs. And instead of curing me? It kept getting worse and worse! The thinner I got, the worse the diabetes got. I had to have a special test to finally diagnose it. Low carb is the only way I can keep my blood sugars stable now, even with insulin therapy. One cookie and I'm blasting up to 500-650 easily. No refined carbs for me ever again unfortunately.

I try my best to mix, intermittent fasting (been doing it for 4 years in a row) + vegan + ketosis (whenever possible) + alkaline oriented diet. so that is exactly why I asked if they can make a video about this mixture, and to see more science behind it :D. knowing in fact that it can be done, also, in one of his video, he said that some natural carbs do not kick u out of ketosis like some ppl think, but actually bad and processed carbs are the ones that can kick u out of ketosis mode, along with fried foods, so yea, let's see.

Hi Thomas: Hope all is well. Before I embarked on Keto journey, my fasting blood sugar was 90-95. It has been 3 months that I have been on Keto and Iam on ketosis. No sugar and I get my few percent carbs only from avocado and vegetables. Ironically, my fasting blood sugar is now about 112 which means I have prediabetes. And there is an article that corroborates with the possibility of kept diet and raise in blood sugar. By the way, I have lost 22 pounds on this diet. But Iam getting concerned about this increase in blood sugar and keto. Please comment. Thanks so much!

Thomas - Firstly just want to say your videos are fantastic and so informative. Secondly - as an expert I was wondering if you could offer any advice to type 1 diabetics who are intermittent fasting. When i do this right it feels amazing but due to how much external factors like diet, excersie and stress affect my sugar levels alot of the time my sugar levels will fall too low whilst I'm trying to complete my fast (which I do mainly for autophagy benefits). Is there a way I can slightly correct my sugars by eating something without breaking the fast or loosing the ability of gaining the autophagy benefits??? If you can help with this I will be extremely grateful.

I have lost 22 kg/ 48 pounds , at present my fasting test around 82 - 90 every day and my ha1c test is 4.8.
    The questions are::
1- Am still pre diabetic or not?
2- Do I still have insulin resistance?

I've been a type 1 diabetic for almost 20 years now (I'm 46) and I recently read that ketosis cannot take place while the body is utilizing insulin. My insulin pump is set to give me small amounts around the clock (basals) and I take estimated doses accompanying meals (bolus) when necessary. It feels like my ketosis is thrown off easily. Could this be due to my insulin pump constantly giving me minuscule amounts of insulin? Should I consult with my endrochronologist about limiting my insulin to certain times of the day to allow ketosis to happen in between?

Why are there so many conflicting opinions about protein consumption and ketosis? I keep seeing that protein doesn't stop ketosis and actually helps it. They say there isn't any proof that too much protein actually negatively effects ketosis. There's even people who have measured their ketones after testing what their protein limit is before it kicks them out of ketosis and they never hit that point. They say gluceogenisys is a natural processes that happens all the time but doesn't happen like an insulin spike, that it's a much slower process and that the excess protein won't interrupt ketosis. But you and a few other UA-camrs say that it does.

Question... if i treat a bad hypo using sugar, and obviously dont inject insulin and it comes up to a good glucose level, am i still in ketosis? My understanding is that insulin breaks ketosis, not sugar specifically (though in normal people sugar makes body produce insulin but in type 1 diabetes, it doesn't). I normally treat my hypos with meat - protein turns into some glucose in the liver in a process called gluconeogenesis. If i have eaten too much protein in a meal, starting from normal good sugar levels, my sugars can still go up to 18mmol/L which obviously isnt good. Thats why its a moderate protein and high fat diet, as fat doesnt peak blood sugar but too much protein will. Also was feeling sick for a few days and realised its because i have eaten too much protein.

Insulin resistance is your body has too much insulin to try and control high blood sugars and is now ignoring it. You gain weight experience metabolic syndrome symptoms and store fat

I found out I was T1D about 9 months ago and just recently decided to try the keto diet. But I have also been vegetarian for 12 years so I’m doing a vegetarian keto diet. I was doing a relatively low carb diet before and taking 1 unit per 10 grams of carbs for fasting acting with each meal. And I was taking 12 units of long acting each day. I’ve been doing the keto diet for 3 days now and I do not need to take any fast acting insulin and have dropped my long acting to 8 units which is clearly still too much for me since I’ve been dropping into the 50s/60s at night when I’m sleeping. I’m thinking my pancreas might be producing enough insulin for me to stop taking insulin completely. Any suggestions? I am 24 years old, work out a few days per week and use a cgm to monitor my levels as well as occasional finger sticks.

you may be in what is known as the honeymoon period where your pancreas will still produce little bits of insulin. i have had diabetes for 36 years-in my first 2 years i only needed 6 units of long acting a day. i now only need 14 long acting & about 1-3 short acting. stick to what you're doing but focus on being healthy rather than coming off insulin as you will need to accept its part of you staying alive forever . even people on keto diet without diabetes produce insulin because you dont just need it for eating. you're doing really well but the true way to manage type 1 is acceptance and that will come trust me. (i know you dont know me but i mean as another person who has had it a long time).

    Let's remember
6.5% is ONLY the official medical standard.
True non Diabetic glucose and Hba1c are not officially established.
Cgm studies of non Diabetics reveals values that are much lower.

    Hey Tom,
When I saw the title of the video....I said this is a very interesting topic.....I had to drop everything to watch the video.....Just have to point out a few details made in the video....
The current conventional treatment of D2 is to give insulin either orally or intravenously, which actually makes the problem worse because the issue of type 2 Diabetes started with too MUCH insulin secretion in the first place....and then for Drs to go ahead and give more insulin to D2 patients is ABSURD....in the least....It's like giving an alcoholic who is dependent on alcohol more alcohol to CURE the alcoholism.....It's INSANITY.
Yes, the Beta cells do crash, BUT the reason is that the cells (main ones: muscles and liver) around the body have STOPPED listening to the insulin MESSAGE...and that happened because people EAT too often and too much sweet things.....which makes the person secrete TOO MUCH insulin in the first place.... Because insulin is pro-inflammatory, the constant secretion damages cells, as a result cells down-regulate insulin receptors to stop insulin from damaging them, because of this, the pancreas get the WRONG message that there is NOT ENOUGH insulin been secreted….so they start producing more insulin for the message to get through to the rest of the body, which worsens the problem.
I agree with the study that the best form for treating D2 is by the Keto diet....it helps cell to be desensitised to the insulin message...and eventually respond to that message of taking up glucose by the cells over time....
Yes the stats are amazing about the Keto diet with D2....I have heard similar reports by Dr Jason Fung, Dr Andrew Steinberg, Dr Albert Mensa.....who have been speaking about this.....
Yes, I agree with the other study about D1 on the Keto Diet too....My hypothesis is that leptin is playing a Key role in the autoimmune disease of D1....controlling leptin MAY help with D1.....the science on this is too weak to make any conclusions.....
    Good Topic.....!

Sir, please enlighten me. Iam realy confuse about insuline, blood sugar, and macros in the purpose of burning fat and gain muscle. Is body start utilizing fat in absence of insulin or in absence of blood sugar ? I read somewhere that protein food also trigger insuline release. So the absence of insulin only occur when we fast. Ok, i have to watch more of your video

Here is a very scientific question for you.
I have been on very low carb for 7 weeks now.
I eat between 12:00pm to 9:00pm, usually only one meal early in that eating window because later I'm really not hungry but will graze on sunflower seeds (in shell), 4 or 5 macadamia nuts and one or two brazil nuts. But nothing after 9:00pm.
Okay, each morning I drink coffee with little heavy cream no sugar and head to the gym to work out.
When I come home 1.5 hours later, I check my blood sugar.
It reads at the high end, around 110-125.
Fasting BS is usually around 75 - 90.
What is likely happening inside me that is making my BS high shortly after a good workout?
    Thanks.

My partner is the same, he is type 1 and on a keto diet, and often has high levels up to 2 hours after working out. Simply put, high intensity workouts put your body under stress. Youre endocrine system releases adrenaline and cortisol, which also causes your liver to release its glycogen stores into the bloodstream as glucose, so that your body's cells can use it for fuel for either a fight or flight response, due to the stress hormones being released. If you dont have any extra insulin in your system, it can't be absorbed into the cells to be used, so it circulates your bloodstream, therefore raising your blood sugar levels. Its best, on a low carb diet, to test your sugar levels every 20-30min for the next 2 hours post exercise to gauge if its coming down on its own, and if so, how quickly, as sometimes little to no insulin is required. Theres been many times my partner has tested right after exercise, taken his normal dose of insulin for that level, and wound up having a low because it was alredy coming down due to the stress hormone levels coming down also. Once we realised, he started leaving it for up to 2 hours after a workout, and often it would come back to a normal level on its own, or he would only have to take 1/2 the amount of insulin he normally would to get it to come back to a normal level

But what about a Keto diet for someone with type 1 diabetes? The idea of Wanting to increase your ketones is terrifying to me bc ive always been told to avoid having them. Everyone uses ketostix to make sure they’re in ketosis but any time I have had ketones in my urine it’s because I was in DKA and incredibly sick with high sugars. I’ll always need small doses of insulin through my pump throughout the day to keep my sugars under control but I want to try the keto diet without running the risk of high BS. Every video I’ve seen on UA-cam focuses on the affects the keto diet has on type 2 diabetics and weight loss which is great, for them.

2:54 you don't explain why we have to lower glucose.
5:37 and now insulin keeps ketones from getting too high? How? Came out of left field without explanation. Up til here insulin is for signaling beta cells to make use of glucose.

drmdmd1 only if it's 50 calories. :) on keto, you probably don't want all of those to be carb.

I am on a 21/3 diet- How do the various insulims (ultra, fast, and regular acting insulin affect the diet if I take them once a day while eating in the 3 hour window. I am still taking insulin once a day as when I do eat in that 3 hour window, my sugar is still going as high as 225. I am thinking that I should use an ultra fast insulin (like aspart) to get the meal spike down and then get the insulin out of my body as fast as possible, so use ultra fast insulin (like aspart) once a day. Correct, not correct?

are you type 1 or 2?the reality is that no synthetic insulin developed as yet can really 'cure' spikes in blood sugar after eating carb dense meals. They do work fast-they start to lower your bs in about 10 minutes but carbs are digested so fast the insulin cannot keep up because it isn;t responding automatically its just in the body playing catch up. They are also not going to offer you the 24 hour insulin you need if you have type 1 diabetes and you will be seriously ill very quickly. It may also be that you dont need a fast acting insulin if you have type 2 because you still produce some insulin still and maybe changing what you eat would be more helpful than changing insulin.

You are very informative, but can I give you a word of advice, could you speak a little more slower and more, kind of like dr. Berg and maybe simplify a little bit. So we can catch up with you and understand and grasp what it is you're trying to say. Thank you so much for your videos

    • @descargaelbano

Haha, we are opposites. To me Dr Berg talks too slowly, making him seem wishy-washy. ;-) Have you checked out KenDBerryMD videos too. I love his videos because they are straight to the point without too many technical terms and sometimes he rants on the old school medical profession because they will not admit keto is good because that would mean they have been wrong.

You can slow down the speed. I think he speaks fast because he's trying to cram so much information in these short attention span target audience.
Lol I like the huge amount of information he's explaining to us I can pause or rewind or rewatch if I missed anything.

I'm a Type 2 from the UK, 52 Year Old Man. I have Diabetes 15 years and not really controlled it, mainly due to my love of food... and the massive portion sizes I have. Anyways I have tried the KETO diet twice before, each time for 6 weeks... both times it's taken my blood sugars into single digits... however I've felt like crap, even though I put that down to not eating enough FAT... so trying it again from today... My only worry is I have just checked my Keytones in Blood... and it's came back as 1.1 mmol/L and I am worried I could go into Ketoacidsis… seems pretty quick for day 1... any advice ? Would love to know what Thomas thinks...
