Burials untrue
❤
Some albums I would add: Aphex Twin's "Drukqs", Burial's "Untrue", Crystal Castles "Crystal Castles", Macintosh Plus "Floral Shoppe", Death Grips "The Money Store", Sophie's "Oil Of Every Pearl's Un-Insides"
Haven't heard of Macintosh Plus. Need to give that a listen
@SuperDuperMusic you might not like it hahaha, but for me is a timeless record, maybe it doesn't check all the boxes but still
boards of Canada ?
squarepusher ‘go plastic’, a lot of blank banshee songs more than the entire records themselves, four tet ‘there is love in you’ - the list is endless
amazing artists you named there :)
Justice actually worked with a choir in London to record the DANCE vocals.
Whoaaaa that's so cool! Where did you find this info?!?
Homework over discovery all day
Agree 👍
I love both records, but Discovery takes the biscuit for me. It’ll never get old.
Goldie - Timeless
Great selection! I would add, Leftfield - Leftism, KLF - The White Room, Guy J - 1000 Words, Hybrid - Disappear Here, Planet Funk - Non Zero Sumness
Kaytranada 99.9%
Great suggestion! I loooove Lite Spots
I can see a considerable amount of influence from Moby in your music. Great analysis and explanation from someone who I consider a genius of the art form. Still crank Hallelujah! on the reg
Yeah Moby has been a big inspiration on my recent releases for sure. Thanks for the kind words and for watching! 🙌
I love that you added 'In Colours'. My favorite album of all time
It's so good! Still blasting Gosh today
🤝🤝
Music has the Right to Children by BOC would probably go on my list.
Olson is soooo good. Such a cool mood / soundscape
Goldie's Timeless is, in fact, timeless.
What an incredible video!
I do think your picks are solid and you'd never please everyone (esp with just picking a few) but just for fun some of my personal ones: Dj shadow - Endtroducing, The avalanches - since I left you, Massive Attack - Protection, Prodigy - MftJG & Fat of the land, Amon Tobin - Bricolage, Board of Canada - MHTRTC, Aphex Twin - Drukqs, Venetian Snares - Rossz, Skream - Skream!, Burial - Burial, Bonobo - Black sands, Clutchy Hopkins - Walking Backwards, Flying Lotus - LA, Four Tet - Rounds, Tokimonsta - Midnight Menu, Gonjasufi - A Sufi & a Killer,
Lots of great suggestions here and a lot that I haven't heard of before. Gonna do a deep dive on all these projects asap. Preciate the thorough response!
@@SuperDuperMusic Just stumbled onto this vid from youtube reccs; so will check out more of your vids soon. I listen to a lot of styles but electronic music is prob the one I listen to most though it's such a broad genre term.
Great video! For me 'Home' by Rudimental also checks the boxes. It wasn't genre defining (as far as I remember),but it sounds like it could have been made today.
Tbh never gave this album a listen. Just checked it out...Waiting All Night is really great. Love the depth they added to DnB. Very cool. Thanks for the suggestion!
I nominate the 2010 trilogy of EPs by Pretty Lights - Making up a Changing Mind, Spilling Over Every Side, Glowing in the Darkest Night
great list. I've got a few. Howie B.- Turn the Dark Off, Chemical Brothers- Exit Planet Dust, Dj Shadow- Endtroducing...
Truthfully...never heard of Howie B. Listening now and loving it! Who's got the bacon is niiice
I bet you would also like Mint Royale - Dancehall Places. It's in that chill-ish big beat world
I came here to say DJ Shadows Endtroducing and I think dig your own hole is a better Chemical Brothers Album. Would have been nice to see Ronin Size on the list , New Forms is a phenomenal album
for me, every album using a lot of samples (like in moby play) are making the album timeless
Great video analysis/docu and still put on your tracks when in different moods. Keep them coming 😊
Thanks so much!
I would definitely mention flume's mixtape (Hi This Is Flume)as a timeless record
Flume is the best! He has such a unique sound that's all his own which might be his biggest strength and maybe weakness imo. He pushes soooo hard to be different and forward thinking that at times I get lost as a listener. Just want a normal drum beat sometimes haha. But without a doubt, he is one of the best in electronic music so nothing but respect for Father Flume!
i was just about to comment the same thing - what a record
Orbital, In Sides
There's a tendency in a lot of electronic music scenes to make music to a template, usually to encourage DJs in that scene to play the records. It's usually artists that make music for its own sake, rather than as part of a scene, or who are influenced by the scene rather than adhering it, that stand the test of time.
What about Goldie - Timeless?
While this is technically a compilation, I want to throw in Future Unknown, issued by Vivarium Recordings. Putting aside that I’m on here … it is two and a half hours of music that covers a lot of electronic ground, especially the 2010s underground varieties (vaporwave and the like). What’s impressive about it was you had about 45 or so different artists contributing to a general idea that simultaneously goes into a million different directions yet is able to create a natural and cohesive flow. You can also think of it as six or more different sci-fi films merged into one … and it works =]
Play all day. Love that record.
Blackboard Jungle Dub from 1973 IMO the most timeless album.
The Dub pioneers also pioneered all electronic music and modern pop music with the producer as an artist and not only engineer.
I'd put in: F.U.S.E. - Dimension Intrusion. Kraftwerk - The Man-Machine. A Guy Called Gerald - Black Secret Technology. LFO - Frequencies. Future Sound of London - Lifeforms. White Noise - An Electric Storm. 808 State - Newbuild. Silver Apples - ST. Felix da Housecat - Kittenz and Thee Glitz. Orbital - Snivilisation. Altern 8 - Full On...Mask Hysteria, to name a few.
Perfect list! Although personally I'd put Computer World over Man-Machine.
And I'd add Reload - A Collection Of Short Stories, Gas - gas0095 (em:t0095), B-Zet - Archaic Modulation, Brian Eno - Ambient 1: Music For Airports, Scan X - Chroma, Newcleus - Jam On Revenge (the album), J-M Jarre's Equinoxe and Zoolook ...and I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot of them...
Solid choices. However, there are more I’d consider timeless myself.
For your consideration:
Migration by Bonobo
Singularity by Jon Hopkins
Kiasmos by Kiasmos
Moderat (1) by Moderat
I See You by the XX
Were not Here - Gil Scott Heron & Jamie XX
100 Days Off by Underworld
Melody AM by Royksopp
Bicep by Bicep
And yes, like many others, Untrue by Burial
Massive Attack’s Protection and Mezzanine are levels of timelessness above the mentioned in the video. Orbital’s In Sides, Prodigy’s Experience and Music for the Jilted Generation, Snap’s The Power and so on are the albums of real timeless electronic music…
I was going to say Portishead's Dummy, which really is timeless but also re-defined trip hop down to a formula that a lot of bands bit, BUT, in the same way you mentioned genre defining, I would argue that Discovery is both timeless and genre defining. The way it introduced their style of sampling and of course influence on house in general is crazy. Without Discovery you don't get records like Cross. It's the rougher more electro version of Discovery, and also two French dudes. Also Daft Punk caused folks like Deadmay5 and others to use crazy helmets in the dance genre.
Bro didn't include upstairs at Eric's 💀💀💀
haha that's a deep cut. yeah sorry Yazoo!
Nice video, and agree with all the picks.
However, I would contest that your genre defining album list at the end is definitely missing Selected Ambient Works 85-92 / Richard D. James Album by Aphex Twin because of the sheer amount of influence and groundbreaking elements Twin managed to impart through his discography. I feel like any "all time" list of electronic music that makes no reference to Aphex Twin is lacking.
I would also suggest that Burial's Untrue is a truly timeless classic for all of the items that you mentioned (except Range perhaps, because the vibe is pretty consistent throughout), maybe a 4/5 on your scale but it holds up amazingly being the purest distillation of walking around a busy metropolis at night, a bit of rain, traffic, catching snippets of people's conversation. The crackly, lo-fi aesthetics make it really stand-out from the sounds at the time and the introspective take on dubstep and UKG was really fresh and still stands as a pinnacle of what that genre of electronic music can really achieve.
I'm hugely into Drum and Bass but I feel like that genre has diverged and evolved so quickly and rapidly with trends coming and going that it's hard to really nail down some timeless contributions because part of the excitement of the music is seeing where people can still innovate, which contrasts with the other aspect of the genre which is where producers try to find mainstream crossover. There are timeless singles, but no timeless albums in DnB in my opinion.
Great points! I hear you on Burial and Aphex Twin having massive influence...especially Burial. To me, both of these artists fit into more of an influential category than timeless IMO. Aphex Twin's sound palette is so experimental and 90s so it's hard for me to hear past those qualities for a timeless label. He is definitely groundbreaking though and I'm sure so many artists wouldn't be doing electronic music if Aphex Twin didn't exist. I just relistened to Burial's Untrue, and you're right about his sounds and aesthetic still feeling fresh...I'm with ya there. I guess since we're going deeper I'll be a lil nitpicky and say that I only hear one overall mood on that album and hear only a few recurring drum sounds and ambient pads. Wish he expanded things a bit more. Still tho...it's a great example of a nearly 20-year-old record that still sounds like it could come out today and turn heads. Timeless art is always subjective tho...even with a goofy checklist haha. But I wanted to try and see if I could make it a little less biased. I was hoping to chat with some devout electronic fans and see how close I was to making a concise list so seriously thanks for the feedback!
In terms of timeless dnb literally Timeless by goldie aha, Roni Size - New forms, LJT Bukem - Journey Inwards, Pendulum - Hold your colour, DJ Fresh - Escape from planet Monday, high contrast - tough guys don't dance, Commix - Call to mind, Chase and status - More than alot.
Picking Discovery over Random Access Memories ain't crazy, picking it over Homework is!
Discovery has almost no skips imo. A lot more depth across the track-listing. It feels like they honed in their skills on Discovery and made their sound more palatable. Homework is a bit too wonky and quirky at times for my taste. I wanted more memorable / hooky moments...just my take on it. Da Funk and All Around The World are def classics though!
@@SuperDuperMusic Well...RAM and Homework stand the taste of time pretty well and by definition, can be considered timeless.
Discovery sounds pretty cheesy today, in my opinion...
@@SuperDuperMusicbig agree with this take. Some cuts off the record go on a little long in the context of an album. It’s a fantastic record, don’t get me wrong, but discovery just takes everything good about Homework and just nails on improving the flow. Both are so close to my heart though.
incredible video!
would you consider 'Velocity: Design: Comfort.' by Sweet Trip to be in this echelon?
I'm curious about that too, but it's more of an idm than electronic i think
Jon Hopkins - immunity.
yeah great one!
17:47 please what song is here playing while you're talking? 🙏hank you! amazing list Josh!
It's one of my unreleased songs I never finished. Shoot me a DM on IG and I'll send it to ya
@SuperDuperMusic Ooooh it sounds amazing as usual! Thank you Josh! 🙏🏻
SBTRKT debut album
Enigma's MCMXC a.D. from 1990 is a good one.
Love this project as well. First heard it on the Pure Moods compilation album...so good
It's good but, timeless? I don't know...
The drums sound very 1990 and those KorgM1's presets (especially that flute) sound pretty cheesy today, in my opinion.
@@kazoku_rec The drums sound fine to me. Not overproduced, not overprocessed, and no cheesy auto-tuning to be found on the entire album. If anything's cheesy, it's today's overuse of auto-tuning. There's nothing wrong with some good presets either. I sometimes do this myself as well. Some people just want to make music, without having to create everything from scratch. The latter falls under sound design and is not a necessity to make good music.
@@DancesRainyStreets Tried to reply to you in details but my comment keeps disappearing...
Giving up.
"Thanks" UA-cam !
@ I've experienced this myself as well. What i was trying to say is, there's lot's of timeless music out there, but all music is tied to the equipment used at that time. Even contemporary music is tied to the equipment used today. Some music has better production qualities than others, not everyone has access to the best studios or equipment. All this overuse of auto-tuning and extreme limiting these days. The latter is to achieve more loudness, even though there's a volume knob on pretty much every playback device, but hey, someone's mixdown is louder and so tends to stand out more. I could go on about waveforms etc. Anyway, i do think that Engima album still sounds as good as back then.
any Skee Mask album.

untrue
Timeless album is an oxymoron and in the same breath all albums are electronic. Nothing on this list is over 50 years old intimating that early electronic musicians like Kraftwek or Morton Subotink weren’t timeless. Albums have existed for a little over 100 years and are on their way out. This whole exploration seems flawed at the onset.
What tripe !
What a narrow point of view.
Starts at the mid 90’s.

Sounds like a pop album list, not really electronic. Dig deeper dude! There are so many better timeless albums.
