The Axolotl Salamander Doesn’t Wanna Grow Up | Deep Look

- Native to the lakes of Mexico City, the axolotl stays in the water its whole life, swimming with a tail fin and breathing through frilly external gills. It’s nearly extinct in the wild, but survives in research labs the world over, studied for its amazing regenerative abilities. With our help, can these beloved creatures thrive once again in their ancestral home?

The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is an aquatic salamander that basically never wants to grow up. It grows in size as it matures, but unlike most of its close cousins in the mole salamander family, it does not change into a land-dwelling adult. For its entire life, it lives in the water, retaining its larval characteristics - like external gills and a tailfin, used for swimming.
Now, the few remaining wild axolotls left in the world live in the middle of Mexico City, in the canals that are the remnants of their native Lake Xochimilco. Here, for over 800 years, the animal has represented a bridge between humans and the natural world. The name “axolotl” comes from the Nahuatl Aztec language meaning “water dog.” For the Aztecs, this swimming salamander is one of the spirit animal forms of the Aztec god Xolotl, who is associated with lighting and death, and imbued with powers of physical transformation.
Mexico City was built around, and on top of, a large network of spring-fed lakes over the hundreds of years of its existence. The lakes were drained and filled in over time, as the millions of people made the city their home.
--- How do axolotls breathe?
The signature frills behind the axolotl’s head are its external gills. The fine, branched structure of these exposed gills allows more surface area to be exposed to absorb oxygen from the water. To breathe, an axolotl just needs to flap those external gills! That’s not all - these animals have even more ways they can breathe. Like all other salamanders, axolotls are able to absorb oxygen through their skin. Plus, they have fully functional lungs they can use if there is not enough oxygen in the water. NOTE to axolotl pet owners: Despite having working lungs, the animals will not survive for more than a few hours out of water.
--- Is the axolotl immortal?
No, axolotls are not immortal, but they do possess extraordinary powers of limb and organ regeneration. If these aquatic amphibians lose a leg, tail or even parts of their spinal cord or brain, they can regrow the missing piece. There are other animals that can regenerate organs and limbs, but the axolotl is one of very few vertebrates (animals with backbones - like us) that is able to do this.

Love to be able to see the red blood cells move inside the gills ! Beautiful camera job
Thanks, that is one of our favorite shots as well.

Amazing shots!
I wasn't sure if that was a purely natural shot or enhanced with CGI. Incredible to learn that it's real. :O
It's real!
It's mind blowing how "small" this channel is compared to it's content quality. Amazing work!
Spread the word!
i know you put small in quotes. but 2 million aint small. not even for quotes, bruh.
We know, but 2 million is definitely too small for such a big team doing all of this consistent research 🤷 it's almost like these producers are making these videos out of their own pockets... 1 million subs can barely give a youtuber about 800 dollars per month, it's not enough actually, you need at least a thousand dollars to afford a decent standard of living by yourself. Imagine the struggle for a whole studio like this.
:o im 2 hours early- yea why am i commenting this ill just get hate :v
I wish we'd stop thinking social media were meritocratic or used it to measure popularity.
"The axolotl salamander doesn't wanna grow up"
Right there with you, buddy.
My little bro doesn't want to grow up either.
*Maybe I am an axolotl*
@@fishbonezzz mee too i dont wanna grow up :(
Everyone is leaving their childhood at a rapid speed and I don’t like that.
Peter Pans, unite.
They are biological treasures worth protecting (although all animals deserve to be protected too)
I agree
But for example cockroaches and rats
I wish I could send them to their native habitats or a wild habitat near me instead of killing them.
But the problem is that wild places are really far from me because I live in an urban area. So sadly I have no other choise than to kill those creatures 😣
Because they will infest my apartment, and also if I sent those creatures to a park, I will give problems to other people . I feel like a monster but I have no choice 😞
I do feel bad for these creatures
I know they want to live like us.
mosquitoes can die
@So so we shall keep mosquitoes?
@@mokou8851 yes
@@beebboody9314 I agree
Because every specie has a job to keep
the ecosystem balanced
And mosquitoes might have a porpuse to be here so that the ecosystem could be balanced. So In my opinion I would protect them if they are in the wild, but if they want to suck our blood, I wont let them.
I never knew that those bushing things are actually gills. Today i learn something new. Thanks Deep Look!
Happy to help!
Never heard someone that speaks English say Xochimilco so perfect😭 proud of ya 💙

Yeah. But I like the mc axolotl.

Had no idea axolotls were salamanders, but it does make sense in hindsight.
Interesting how these creatures have been involved in human mythology.
they r also involved in wolf and rabbit mythology
"That's amazing for a vertebrate, an animal with a backbone like us" 😃😃
You have a backbone like salamander
A friend told me that there's actually a conservation effort being made in New Mexico to make them another natural habitat
Would it be natural if it's made by humans, though..
@@mbrusyda9437 well, sort of. It would be naturalized the same way non native, invasive and non invasive plants and animals become naturalized. After living/thriving, reproducing, and becoming part of the natural habitat/environment without harm to the natives here, it will just blend in with the rest of the beautiful wild creatures. naturally. Lol I hope I make sense.
@@kathryncastanares525 but i dont tink its a good idea to make a new axolotl habitad in a place so diferent from their original one
@@Leyva0scarVRL the one they originally lived in isn’t a good candidate anymore though. Also they’re highly specialized and probably wouldn’t even be able to cause trouble as an invasive species.
@@fishyfishyfishy500akabs8 yeah thats the problem i am from mexico and the enviroment they live in is very especialized and there are high probabilities of failiure by literally introducion them to another contry

I have one of these at home! He's an albino with black dots on his nose and red/pink gills with blue eyes. He constantly looks happy and swims up to the surface, because he loves taking air from above the water!
Huh, does he have dark blue eyes or light blue eyes? Albinos usually have very light eyes and leucistic axolotls have darker eyes. They are very similar in looks but easily told apart by the eyes. 🤔
@@parlike. his eyes are both. A mix between dark and light blue
@@REDFRLegend ooo thats cool!
@@REDFRLegend "A mix between dark and light blue"
not a true albino then, instead it is what we call "leucistic". the true albino forms have pink eyes, as they completely lack pigment.
@@thomasneal9291 leucistic? I don't think that word exists in my native language...

I have 7 of them currently and they are such amazing creatures this channel really showed that too

I’m happy that I’ve been pronouncing their name properly my whole life
YESSSSS THIS HAS BEEN A PERSONAL FAV I ACTUALLY HAVE ONE AND HAVE BEEN WANTING YOU GUYS TO DO THIS EPISODE (sorry if I’m doing caps I’m just really happy)
Axolotl is actually pronounced "ah-show-lut!"
It's a Nahuatl word, the "tl" isn't pronounced phonetically. You press your tongue against the roof of your mouth and exhale from the sides.
Wow! It’s like the ll in Icelandic!
does the same apply to the word “chocolatl”?
@@potatobird52 Yup! The "tl" counts as a single consonant, never a full syllable. It's in a lot of Nahuatl words that have made their way or have been loaned into both English and Spanish.

Gosh I love these guys so much!! My local zoo has one but its tank really wasnt up to par, i emailed them saying what was wrong with it (not enough space to move in, too much blinding light from above and no bubbler!) so they moved him to the back in a tank with a much better set up!
