You can use either the zapper or the ruler to get rid of the dirt to go down to bedrock, using tnt is the worst way you could have done it And also instead of placing 20+ rows of tnt, you could have used the rule at the beginning of the plot to place a line and atop of that place a line of dirt and then get rid of the initial line
