George Eustice Truth Twists To Protect Boris Johnson &

  • George Eustice, former DEFRA secretary, boldly defends #brexitreality with a stream of bravado and lies, most of which are allowed to go unchallenged by host Andrew Marr.
Only the rich will be able to now afford to give flowers thanks to Brexit but Eustice minimised the impact. Marr didn’t remind audiences that the govt has once again decided to talk up Brexit impact and keep calculations hidden from scrutiny.
Independent, expert analysis for ITV News suggests the cost of the new border controls will be £2.9 billion - almost ten times higher than what Govt estimate.

  • @SonOfViking
    @SonOfViking Місяць тому +35

You are correct, Liz. Absolutely everything that came out of that man's mouth in this interview was a blatant lie, the most egregious of which being the initial assumption on which the entire interview was based and which Marr seemingly was equally ignorant of too.
The UK is not actually performing checks from this week - it is certainly charging for them, but it is not actually performing them to any degree which would finally bring it into compliance with its obligations under Article 20 of the WTO Agreement. Even if it had the capacity, personnel and infrastructure in place to do so (which it doesn't), should it suddenly start fulfilling its obligations in this regard under international law the government knows that it would effectively bring the entire food supply chain to a sudden and grinding halt, with all that this would then entail. So they have done what they always do - announced something as "real" which has as much basis in easily observable reality as the unicorns on the sunlit uplands ever enjoyed either.
Amazingly Marr, and indeed most UK media journalists, keep talking about these "checks" as if they are the result of an arbitrary decision on the part of the government regarding their extent and the timing of their introduction, and people like Eustace are more than happy to lie to the British public by pretending this too. The truth is that from the moment the UK left the EU the absence of these checks has been a blatant breach of Article 20 of the WTO Agreement, something that has not escaped the attention of many of your trading partners, including the EU itself which will focus very much on this blatant illegality of the UK when the TCA's implementation comes up for review next year. I have no doubt that it has been increasingly forceful complaints (including the threat of nullifying existing trade deals) from all these sources that have prompted the government to finally address this issue. And even this it couldn't do honestly.
But be aware - the UK public, media and politicians may be blissfully ignorant of the consequences of behaving like a rogue state with utter contempt for international law and a total lack of understanding as to how or why it should ever apply to them. But the rest of the world is not.
You guys are in even bigger trouble than you realise!

Ah Useless Eustice one of the more dim than most Tories and that’s a low bar.
As to the UK-EU Trade & Cooperation Agreement (TCA) it’s in no way a comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA) such as one of the many that the EU has with other developed nations - for example the EU - Canada CETA agreement.
The TCA is a barebones trade deal with tariffs set at zero but far far more importantly it has next to zero agreements of mutual equivalence of standards (MEA’s) to get around the myriads of sectoral non-tariff-barriers (NTB’s) that exist in all modern trade.
There are no MEA’s because the dominant ERG faction of the Tories refused to allow the signing of these claiming that they infringed UK sovereignty. This is a BS argument since any bilateral trade deal requires both sides agree to a set of standards in every sector.
The new UK deals with Japan and with Australia for example, contain all those MEA’s which were rolled over from the pre-existing FTA’s the EU has with those nations and under which the UK as a EU member used to trade.
In fact the new bilateral deals the UK has started as exact rollovers of EU deals but in many areas are the new bilateral deals worse for the UK as those nations knew the UKG was desperate to sign new deals and so those other nations forced changes that suited them - as we know from the new trade deal with Australia.
So why no MEA’s with the EU? It’s here that that the Brexiter EU derangement syndrome looms large. It was openly expressed by David Frost who told Michel Barnier that the UK would not sign any MEA’s and that the EU must just ‘accept the UK as equivalent’ with no signed agreements to keep standards as they are. The idea of Brexiters was that this would allow the UK freedom to change its standards to suit the USA and pursue a trade deal with the US. The US has very different standards- not necessarily lower, but they often are. Fir example the US allows a lot of food additives that are currently illegal in the EU and UK and it also does not require clear labelling laws and the US regards strict UK labelling laws as an ‘unfair trade barrier’ to US companies and wants them repealed before it will do a trade deal.

  • @celltest7645
    @celltest7645 Місяць тому +6

The checks are mandatory because of Brexit according to WTO rules which Quitterlings were so fond of. According to WTO rules, no country is allowed to give any other country or trade block preferential treatment. Importing goods from the EU unchecked is a form of preferential treatment. Either the UK stops controlling goods imported from any country, not just the EU or any WTO member can sue the UK over this.

I did join the Brexit plan never fully appreciating the doom and gloom that has rained supreme. In the position we are now in, we rely heavily on the EU for our goods which puts us in a pickle. While it was a good alliance in a sense of sorts the control and costs that was involved is horrible.

Very interesting; So after the UK levers the EU, the framers lost 40% of their market and are now weighted down with extra cost on the food that they do export to the EU. However, after leaving the EU; their income have never been higher and in fact they have doubled. So what were the framers doing wrong when the UK was a member of the EU then? Eustice is full of bollocks.

And for your delectation and edification, here are my reflections on the matter.
Disappointingly, the Rejoin EU “crowd” withdrew from the mayoral election in the lead up. Count BINFACE is still in the race so a Count BINFACE vote count victory is a given. So all bets between them are off. Score another for Count BINFACE.
The Rejoin EU (Federal Trust) “crowd” have mustered up 13 candidates for the “11 additional London wide councillors” chosen through PR.
I've got the list here. Names, borough they live in (not relevant to the additional councillor contingent), and past vote count (where relevant).
      Behold!
      HEWISON Richard: Barnet (105)
      KERR Alex: Southwark
      BLAKE Charlotte: Camden
      DONNELLY Brendan: Barnet (99)
      GALLO Alessandro: Wandsworth
      KAPOOR Briony: Camden
      MANDUJANO Marianne: H'smith & Fulham
      MILES Drew: Hackney
      REND Ben: Barnet (136)
      WILLIAMS Laurence: Bexley (100)
      AIREY Jaki: Haringey
      BEZER Simon:Barnet
      ALDUK Jas: Barnet
No, no! Don't laugh yet! Savour the moment when results are announced.
The Federal Trust YT channel is frequented by (predominantly non UK resident / voter) anti brexiters who, to this day, flame brexit supporters with their claims of “polls” showing “85% support for “rejoin” in the UK.
When I vainly point out to them that the EU referendum had a 72.2% turnout and that at its highest, the EU parliament elections had a 38.6% UK turnout in 2004, it seems to be lost on them.
I would argue that when Rejoin EU gets the same vote count as attended the last NRM march, leave supporters will scoff at them but they will still not “get it”.
