  • You never know what you're going to find in the calving pasture. Some cows are alright with us messing with their calf for a minute. Some don't really like it. Also, our bottle calf has a name!

There sure are lots of different tagging systems out there, you are correct there!
We do the same as you folks... Heifer calves in right ear and steers in the left. Also cows & calves get matching numbers... Sure does help us when pairing up on pasture!
Tell Ashlyn I loved her suggestion about pairing out 939 & calf via the pickup! 😁😁

Awesome video. Gotta watch them overprotective mammas wife was right. Yuh shoujd have moved the calf while you already had it in the truck. I loved the look on your face when she said that. God bless you and your family buddy. And remember God loves you

Now here's something I can comment on. I worked a registered brangus ranch for ten years so I had to tag and weigh every calf. Did alot of embryo work so I was calving 250 to 300 calves a year. By myself. Now I could get into deep detail about this but we'd be here til next week. And I'm not telling anyone how to do it. This is just how I did it. Keep the calf quiet. Catch em napping is good. Have your taggers in the back pocket, ready to tag. Cotton scales and little hand plaited rope with a loop on each end, for weighing. Extra soft rope. Good whip. Calm disposition. Firm, yet calming voice. Nerves of steel. And quick on your feet just in case. Brangus have enough Brahman in em to have very bad attitudes and they're damn good mama's. Cool y'all, brought back a lot of fun memories. That was 25 years ago. But I'd still do it today. Appreciate y'all. ✌️

Hi Bob, I just got my first few registered weanlings Brangus last week, so I have a while before breeding/tagging/weighing. How do you go about weighing them and getting the EPD information? Thanks

Garret, I've sent you a few messages asking questions. I'm sure you've already answered, but new to your channel, I'm learning here as we go along.... do you really respond to questions? I want to buy a few heads of cattle as a start-up, but I have questions after watching your show. How old does a heifer have to be before breeding here? If I want to buy 3 heifers, is buying them pregnant better than also buying a bull and breeding them myself???

Welcome!! I would suggest middle age bred cows. Bred cows will get you a quicker return and guarantee a calf right when u get em. No days we can breed on heifers as yearlings and have their first calf as 2yr olds but I suggest getting cows that have had a couple calves

@Behind The Wire I've been on a behind the wire marathon... you've mentioned what you do might be that exciting for a video, but it depends on what you're looking for, I think. I grew raising a cow and horse... as soon as our cows were to butcher we good a new born and started the process over... it cracks me up when you say youre not a fan of bottle feed calves...lol I find what you do awesome! It reminds me of good times and I'm thinking of getting about 4 or 5 to raise sell and freezer... hope you won't mind me bombing you with questions... did you see my minerals barrel idea?

@@behindthewire Here in East Anglia UK we've had so much rain that the cattle are splashing about on my grazing marsh and churning it into mud.
