I have watched so many dramas with a sad ending but this one really shattered my heart... at the begining she was such a joyful and shining person but by the end was hertbroken beyond saving yet she still remained kindhearted. I loved him as a character he was not perfect knight in shining armour, but yet he was very lovable character... they loved each other so much but their love was stained with revenge and there was no saving. Even whem they forgot about each other they still fell in love deeply... Sadly their love was doomed and his punishmeny for his sins is her death... but my heart aches so kuch because despite their deep love they got very few moments of happiness together even when they got married... I dont know how am i going to get over this drama because it makes my heart so heavy and i end up crying likena baby.. i really need to forget it.. ;(

Its more pitiful to see a playful girl turning herself with full of hatred....where she have to live happily...she ended up drastically....where her every family member showed affection ended up in being orphan...... everything bcoz of one person...and more pitiful is felling in love with a person who ruined her hppy life
Well said, so sad, they r both in love at the wrong time wrong era n positions... I can't hate xiao wu either... he have a role as a prince to play... so much so... this director is really good. Some director focus on the scenes but not the deep feeling ... this drama brings out all the sweetness, romance, hatred, dilemmas, fun n joy of both actors... everyone plays their part so well... I will check out more of this director drama

Did anybody notice that Xiaofeng said she would forgive that prince in the story Gu Xiaowu told her when they were at Danchi, then at the very end of the series, she says she forgives Li Chengyin? I thought that was a nice recall back to the beginning and tying up the ending nicely.

@@drinzdrinz2371 these 2 could never be together the minute he annihilated her grandfather and his tribe. Another really dark and tragic drama to watch is Royal Nirvana....this one I had to take breaks by watching light hearted romantic comedies..

Others wanted a different ending for these two,but I think it was just right that they ended that way. Their relationship has already alot of bad memories in it. Love wont be enough to get rid of all that pain, disappointment,betrayal and others. It would be hard to love and hate a person at the same time. No matter what the prince do they could never go back to the lovers they were back then.
This made me cry a bucket and even now I still shed some tears for them. One of the dramas I would never forget.
So true love alone was not enough to make up to her. Too much has happened and it went beyond repair that love alone was too less to compensate

I think the best way to describe Li Chang Yin's love towards Xiao Feng is the fact that he was fighting for the idea of her and her loving him, not her happiness. He wasn't doing what made her happy he was doing what he thought he should to get her to love him or at least stick around. He did all of these things to try and win her back but the damage he had caused was already too severe. So when she still treated him coldly, he got frustrated. It's kind of like when "the nice guy" treats you well and with respect but when you reject him, he gets defensive and acts like he's entitled to your attention and love because he was a decent person to you.
He was an amazing character but I think he could have a lot to learn from Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice lmao.
Idk what is it but seeing Cheng Yin growing old alone and keep missing Xiou Feng for his whole life break my heart. It makes sense for this drama to have a tragic end and it would be weird if they live happily in their 2nd life after seeing all Cheng Yin wrong doing towards Xiou Feng. But really, I can't bear to watch Cheng Yin without Xiou Feng. It is heart breaking 💔
The drama version didn't go into details how much he longed for her so it was less heartbreaking but in the novel epilogue and in some of the short stories written by the original author that take place after Xiao Feng's death you could really tell how much he loved her and he was living with so much guilt and remorse. He was said to be a wise and a good ruler but he was never happy after her death. It's a fitting ending after all the things he did to her but it's just so tragic. I couldn't help but shed tears.

@@namhofficial Had they included all that in the drama version as well then I think our hearts would be completely broken into pieces (whether we hate the prince or not). The epilogue and those short stories are very depressing to read.
Chibiaya Somehow I cant hate the prince’s character. In the old days, vengeance was an important thing. He had to do it for his Gu family and he was mean to the princess to protect her from the court’s political intrigue and politics. Rightly or wrongly. As for killing the Dancii tribe it was also political, and killing her Sifu, was due to jealousy because he loved her. My late mum was from Shanghai and she would tell me about the history of China with the jealousy and treachery, especially in the forbidden palace. One of her ancestors was a royal concubine. Thank God we’re born in this era.

In the BTS, LCY couldn't stop crying in the scene where XF died, even though they stopped filming already. PXR had to console him. Their chemistry is amazing!

What makes me super sad is that no one really really really truly loved her. Like no one person was willing to completely and totally put her above their own desires, she was almost always just a tool and the side benefit was her love and trust for them. Makes me so mad 😠

I really liked the fact that she remained kind from the beginning until the end. I'm glad she didn't choose to plot a dirty revenge scheme against LCY. Xiao Feng is truly a kind person, a pure soul that cannot be found in the cruel and cold palace of Central Plains. I can tell why LCY fell in love with her. There's really no one else like her. I'm just sad that a kind girl like her had to go through so many tragic events.
After this drama, I did follow Peng Xiao Ran & Chen Xing Xu’s other works and tbh until today, their best chemistry is still with each other. The chemistry on GMP was just off the charts! It’s such a big pity if they never work together again after this strong chemistry they showed here.
Such a beautiful and heart wrenching drama. Li Chengyin is a such a complex character. I believe he is actually a genuine person but was unfortunately born into royalty, a path full of schemes, revenge, and cruelty. He had to either eliminate others or be eliminated.. securing the throne is the only way to protect himself and the person he loved. Although he committed unforgivable acts, he only did what he thought was right. From beginning to end, his feelings for Xiaofeng never changed. He truly loved her but only knew how to express it as possession given his path. She loved him deeply as well but she is selfless and always put others before herself like her family, her homeland, and overall peace and justice.
I keep thinking over and over how differently things could’ve gone because they both suffered so much. Thank goodness their next life is happy. Gosh. I cried buckets watching this. One of the most captivating dramas I’ve ever seen. 😭 someone heal me LOL.

It was like watching a whole different drama. 😭 Definitely would love to see these two leads in another drama to help heal us. lol!
Yes, the Director's Cut is more detailed and helps you to understand the characters more. I can't believe they cut so many scenes from the earlier 52 episodes version. Glad you were able to watch the complete version. Girl, I can totally feel you. It's been a year for me yet I still can't move on from this drama. I think I'm the only one who still makes new MVs of this drama but I can't help it. I've watched many dramas after GMP but I still can't find any drama that I enjoyed as much as GMP.

This series script is so well written. Every word spoken pulls at your heartstrings, one way or the other. I often have to speed forward in other shows with a lot of time wasting scenes, but not this. Every scene is necessary to weave the story. Every actor, even in the small parts, acted so well, thanks mainly I would say to the director. Well done! Thank you for posting!
What a beautiful well done recap of this drama. I know it ends in tragedy so I've just been watching the videos instead of the whole series. LiChengYin really did love XiaoFeng except in a really dysfunctional, obsessive, jealous way. You can say this was an abusive love story. They fell in love but because of all his despicable acts along the way to the crown, he constantly was hurting her mentally by killing all the ones she loved. There just was no redemption for his acts and the more he wanted to win back her love, the more she wanted to run away..and the more she tried to run from him, the more he pursued her because he couldn't bear for her to leave him. But had his love been truly whole, he should have done the self-sacrificing thing and let her go. But that was the problem...he couldn't let her go so his love became obsessive and possessive. They had their moments of real love but then they were marred by what he did. It was truly tragic. And in the end, he couldn't find peace and happiness without her. *Sobs*
I hope you'll give this drama a chance even if it ends in tragedy. The short video clips only show parts of the story but lots of important details are not there.
Chibiaya I watched a lot of the clips and did end up watching the eps that I wanted to especially towards the end so I could get a better understanding of the little clips I seen. No matter what I’d end up in tears watching the tragedy play out. Absolutely heart wrenching. The two leads were amazing with the depths of their acting. The whole cast was perfect. Maybe one day I will watch the full drama series..if my heart can take it! :)
Kistan12 yes, truly tragic. I always ugly cry when watching this drama too but I love it so much. She knew that if she died, it would also be a punishment for him. For the rest of his life he’d miss her and he had to live bc it’s one of the promises he made with her before she sacrificed herself :(

You totally misunderstood the drama & your analysis leaves much to be desired. I suggest that you go back & rewatch the whole drama which is worth rewatching & will give you a different perspective. LCY/GXW is not dysfunctional, obsessive, possessive. He truly loved XF & vice versa but circumstances got in their way. He was made to believe XF grandfather's tribe killed his best brother which wasn't the case, thus the forced revenge on his part. He asked his cousin Gu Jian who also love XF to help him but it didn't materialize as planned & XF saw his grandfather killed & the destruction of her kin. To kill her love for GXW, she drowns herself in the river of oblivion where GXW tried to save her but eventually both lost that memory of their love in the river of oblivion. Years later, XF marries LCY who is now the crown prince in a political move & feels attracted to him then recovers that lost memory which pits her hatred & love for the prince. LCY kept being drawn to XF like a magnet & he couldn't understand why he gets a headache every time thus his behavior is irrational. He even forgot his first cousin & treated him as his enemy. Only his faithful general & ADA knows the whole story but they are both closed mouth. He only recovered his memory at the last minute. The tragic ending is unavoidable for XF who loves the crown prince as well as his brother on opposing sides. The only recourse to stop the fighting & save lives is for her to sacrifice herself & deviate the attention to herself. One of the best, superb Cdrama I've watch with a tragic ending.

With a few exceptions (them weaving through a kneeling crowd being one of them), this drama had one of the best scripts in Cdrama. The line about his hands being colder than her heart - so much symbolism there - and that entire conversation where she tells him that what they feel for each other is nothing more than two people clinging to each other while crossing a high bridge…just so beautifully and concisely written.

I've seen this drama many times. This week I've rewatched it and the pain still hits the same! Such a beautiful storyline of love, betrayal, loyalty, war and history. The costume design is so beautiful and Peng Xiao Ran is such a beauty! Definitely one of the most beautiful Chinese actress. She's so underrated as an actress!! ❤❤❤

I would usually watch a drama a couple of times if it's really good This drama is sooooo good and leaves a deep impression on me so I will remember it always. Yet, I never watch it again, simply because it wrecks me. I love the story and the cast. I commend them for making it so believable. It's not your typical Chinese drama at all. This will ruin you and will make you cry bucket of tears. I never rewatch it yet I sometimes go back to clips of this drama and it all comes back to me again. I cannot put into words how amazing this drama is.

Never really hated Cheng Yin action from the beginning to end, his innocence started to fade when he started to know about his dark history and was replaced with greed and anger leading to his bad actions. His love for the Princess was real and pure, no one can doubt that but the princess background was the biggest crisis on this story. At the point were he chose to kill her grandpa i know their love would end up bitterly.
Cheng Yin feeling remorse and guilty for the sins he have committed was the best ending they could give us.
I was happy he ended up being a good ruler and he did not made the same mistake his father did though i felt the loneliness and longingness must have been a torn in his heart.

Watching the drama made me learned and understand things around me more, the princess is a sacrifice destiny made her to be, ever since she was young everything and everyone genuinely care and love her, she was pure the perfect hero, the one who gives light to everyone and that's why she have the biggest responsibility and the one who get hurt the most. She have the biggest burden to carry out of every character, she had a destiny to fulfill. And what I learned is that like a loved celebrity they have to carry a big responsibility. Maybe there is really a price to pay if you received love, maybe there's nothing really free, there will always be a karma to make you pay, because being loved is not luck but fortune, it's a bonus that not all of us can have. Do you deserve the bonus in life?
I usually don’t watch dramas with sad ending but when the drama was airing I didn’t know it’d have a sad ending so I gave it a go.When I found out I had only 2 eps left till I finished and till now I haven’t watched it cuz I’m afraid I won’t be able to bear it.Though I don’t cry in the most saddest dramas it doesn’t mean just bc tears don’t come out I don’t feel sad.

I think it's very difficult to move on from this drama. I still haven't got out from the pit even after a year so I can't help you :D Maybe you should try watching more historical dramas and perhaps you will find another amazing drama that can surpass this one.

I thought their love story would be much more longer than this 25 minute. But when i saw this video, i realize their story although is shorter than 25 minute, but it really makes me cry to see their tragedic story.

I really wanted to make a longer video because there's no way their love story could be squeezed in a 25 min video perfectly but then I was worried if the mv gets too long then nobody wants to bother to watch a 1 hr video :D I had no choice but to omit so many other important scenes too.

As a veteran drama watcher (been watching Asian dramas since 1997), I'm extremely picky and only like dramas (prefer romance or ancient historicals) with a decent script and production. Story and characters are the most important to me and I find many romantic dramas these days to be crap with non-existent plots. "Goodbye my princess" took me completely by surprise and will go down as one of my favorite romantic dramas of all time along with "Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms," "Someday or One Day," and "Romance of Tiger and Rose" (a bit too comedic, but is a well-crafted/quality drama with a romance that stole my heart). "Ten Miles" and "Tiger and Rose" also have the most charismatic/powerful MLs that are as relentless as Chengyin when it comes to the FL -lol, love it!!!
I initially never even bothered to look at "Goodbye my princess" as not only is it a tragedy, it's based on a novel by Fei Wo Si Chun, an author I avoid like the plague because I don't like the type of angst she writes -depressing plots and angst just for the sake of torturing her characters. Even when someone who shared my exact taste for possessive MLs recommended it, I still resisted. Luckily, my sister stumbled upon some clips and finally convinced me to watch at least the first and last 10 episodes since they have the kind of angst I like and an extremely compelling obsessive ML as well as a very lovable FL. The clips she showed me peaked my interest and the rest is history. I hunted for the director's cut and knew from the first episode that this drama was going to be my jam. It had everything I wanted in a drama: Irreplacable leads with explosive chemistry, an obsessive/powerful ML, high quality production, and a decent script that mainly stayed on track even if the pacing did slow down massively from episodes 15-29. I loved episodes 1-15 and 30 to the end (though the drama got rushed towards the end and I would have liked to see more episodes of Chengyin dealing with his memories coming back -that kind of angst would have be stellar).
And aside from being a tragedy, GMP surprisingly embodied the kind of romantic angst I love and avoided almost every type of angst I hate.
The kind of angst I hate in a romance is noble idiocy (ML pushing the FL away for her own good, etc.), cheating/constantly parading women in front of the FL, angst for the sake of angst, ML being too passive and self sacrificing (I only love MLs who go after their girl no matter what and like to take the initiative), and ML giving up/letting the FL go (only love MLs who never give up or let go of their girl).
GMP mainly had angst I liked and it all fit into the story naturally and didn't feel forced. I generally can't tolerate the ML sleeping with anyone other than the FL, but in GMP, he actively avoided it as much as he can while keeping up his charade and it can even be argued the number of times he may have touched Sese was minute as she was constantly subjected to house arrests by the Empress due to his shenanigans. I was able to handle it because the drama made it clear Chengyin only wants to be with XF, but is forced to spend the occasional night with Sese to keep up pretenses. Even then, he does his best to keep himself pure by using work/the Empress to ward off Sese.
Above all else, the ML, Chengyin emcompassed everything I could possibly want in a leading man. He's obsessive/possessive and unrelenting when it comes to XF -will never give up on her. Plus, he's faithful, capable, intelligent, charming, charismatic, hot as hell, and can see through subterfuge.
He can be ruthless to everyone except for his beloved XF and that just really appeals to me in a romance story. Ruthless and powerful MLs who's only soft towards the FL and can't live without her is my kryptonite in a romance. Never in a million years did I expect one of Fei Wo Si Chun stories to have this kind of ML. Especially when the source novel has Chengyin being abusive and always hiding his affections. I never expected the drama to portray the "abuse" in such a humorous and charming manner. It just never felt malicious to me (there was too much love/affection in Chengyin's eyes and mannerisms -he acted more like a spoilt child) as the drama made it so blantantly obvious that every cruel act's a show that I was thoroughly entertained and enjoyed all of their bickering. Lol, I found it as endearing as Chengyin did. He's literally engaging in foreplay with the heroine even in their public fights and whenever he gets mad for real, it's always due to his petty jealousy. Lol, this guy becomes wary of every male XF has a good relationship with. It's like he wants to be the only recipient of her smiles and laughter.
I really felt his all-consuming love for XF: I actually loved watching their married life because even though he couldn't display his feelings in front of his beloved XF, he still wore his heart on his sleeve for us viewers. Every one of his supposed "mean" actions against the XF was juxtaposed by his pained/regretful reactions when he later talked to Shi-en or Pei Zhao.
Lol, as a viewer, I actually thought Sese suffered more in the palace than XF because of Chengyin's fake love that effectively used her as a meat shield to protect XF from the Empress's jealous antics. Many people in the palace were very nice to XF as the ML concentrated on surrounding her with trustworthy people.
Unlike some fans, I didn't mind his scenes with Sese as his fake interactions with her made for a brilliant contrast compared to his genuine interactions with XF. His eyes literally light up whenever he sees XF, even when Sese's around -his eyes are always kind of dead when he's spending time with Sese. In my opinion, Sese's presence in this drama highlights Chengyin's deep love for XF even more.
He always acts so distantly polite whenever he interacts with Sese and it just gets worse as he finds it harder to rein in his passion for XF. Towards the end, he looks like a zombie and is struggling to even maintain decent courtesy whenever he bothers to see her. I found it hilariously entertaining and can't understand the fans who think his scenes with Sese were too lovey-dovey. His affections were so obviously (his mask was always on and I felt no affection) fake and it only served its intend effect, which was to keep the Empress off of XF.
I love Chengyin and find him to be one of the most fascinating and compelling protagonists I've ever seen. I've always loved more villainous MLs and Chengyin is a poster child for that trope. I live for drama characters like him. Honestly, the only thing Chengyin did wrong was to fall in love with the key pawn in his plan. His unwavering love for Xiao Feng is both his curse and salvation. My heart bleeds for both XF and Chengyin as she can never be with him with her memories intact and he can never stop himself from chasing after her because she's his only hope of happiness, the light to yank him back from the darkness. Only when Chengyin is with XF does he let down his guard completely and show her his true self. I completely understood why he went nuclear and full on yandere when he thought she hated him and loved someone else. He's terrified of losing the one thing he can't live without. It's utterly heartbreaking when what he feared the most inevitably happened and he couldn't even follow after her as he was binded by his promise to her to live on. Even then, he had to deluded himself into thinking she faked her death in order to make it through those 30 yrs. His love for XF is all-consuming and he will go down as my favorite ML along with Ye Hua from "Ten Miles."
Whew, sorry for rambling, but I'm so consumed by this drama and needed to vent out all my thoughts. I just want Chengyin and Xiaofeng to be happy together and I'm in so much pain for the both of them.

Finally someone who appreciates Li Cheng Yin's character (drama version)! haha I also enjoy ruthless and powerful characters who are only soft towards the girl they love (although in real life they're major red flags so in no way are they ideal type of men). Like you, I didn't mind his scenes with Sese either because I could tell right from the early scenes that he was never interested in her romantically so she was never a threat in my eyes. I don't get why so many viewers still mistook him as liking her. I was like did we even watch the same drama?!
Yes, Fei Wo Si Cun is known for her tragic and very depressing novels and I think "Goodbye My Princess" was one of her most tragic ones. I usually don't watch overly depressive stories but GMP really lures you in with its captivating storyline. I see you also enjoyed "Romance of Tiger and Rose"!! I loved that drama as well. It was quite well written and so funny too. I fell in love with Han Shuo after I saw that drama :D I just finished making a mv for that drama recently and I'm going to upload it on my channel in the upcoming days.

Sese was no competition and it was clear (director's cut version) the ML never liked her even before he embarked on his revenge (he looked rather uncomfortable after her confession). I hate wishy-washy MLs, but the drama and actor made it clear as day that Chengyin only loves XF. Every scene he shares with XF is brimming with passion/love. He interacts so naturally with her in a way that he never did with anyone else, let alone Sese. Sometimes I do think certain fans and I didn't even watch the same drama.
Yep, I watched "Romance of Tiger and Rose" right before "Goodbye my Princess" and thoroughly loved both. Only reason I prefer GMP is due to my preference for more serious dramas. I'm glad I started with a more comedic drama before following up with GMP because the latter was so heavy/haunting that it seriously would have hampered my enjoyment for any drama that comes after. I'm seriously poisoned by GMP with no hope of an antidote anytime soon. I got really lucky with these two dramas and villainous MLs (Han Shuo and Li Chengyin) that I doubt I'll find anything else comparable. I'm looking forward to your "Romance of Tiger and Rose" mv :)
@usagi Both dramas were really good but GMP somehow hits me a different way. Maybe because of its tragic ending and more serious tone so I prefer it more but I do think "Romance of Tiger and Rose" was one of the best idol romantic comedy dramas I've seen. Usually I don't often watch dramas from this genre because I find the love/male leads rather too good to be true but somehow in this drama Han Shuo just makes everything work :D But I've got to admit that I fell for him harder after he turned a bit evil xD I enjoyed those parts the most lol
I've been poisoned by GMP for over a year and I'm still trying to find an antidote but without success. I got a double dose of that poison because not only did I fell in love with GMP but also for the actor who played LCY so it's hard for me to get out of this pit. GMP will always remain as one of the best dramas I've ever seen and unlike many others I do love LCY's complex character. Although I don't agree with the things he did but I still love him as a fictional character. Male leads like this don't come by often :D
@@Chibiaya10 Lol, same here! Ruthless Han Shuo in black was the best and delivered all the emotional feels when he got all aggressive with QQ. Similar to LCY, even when Han Shuo acted "cruel" to QQ, he still acted in a way where I can really tell he loves her deeply. Sigh...love MLs like them!

I was going to watch this series but I won't anymore cuz I can't take this much heartache and sadness. I'll destroy my eyes by crying nonstop..
It's not that bad. I think the bgm in this mv just made it sadder. The heartbreaking parts are in the early episodes and very near the end. The middle part is a lot lighter than many imagine ;) You can still try to watch it and there's always the modern epilogue were they have their happy ending so altogether it's not that bad.
I think I should soon put a disclaimer in the description box that viewers shouldn't watch this mv before they've seen the whole drama xD Everyone is running away after they see this video...

this is too heartbreaking.... i cannot even fiish the drama bcs i have exam but to see all this... probably one of the most tragic drama i have ever seen. they loved each other so so so much, but his actions is too unfogiveable. my heart throb so much for fengxiao. the one that she loved was the pure gu xiaowu, not the li chengyin that killed her family.... its too much for her that she cannot bear to live anymore. arghhh im really sadddddd
It is definitely one of the most heartbreaking dramas I've seen but this drama is sooooo good though. I hope you will still continue it once you finish your exams. I think she really hoped everything was just a nightmare and that Gu Xiao Wu was that kind and nice man whom she first fell in love with. Li Cheng Yin is always associated with the betrayal and killing her grandfather even though GXW and LCY are the same person. In the novel even at her last breath she was still thinking of Gu Xiao Wu and kept telling herself that he never died. He just went to catch fireflies for her. Omg, at that part I just couldn't hold my tears. Xiao Feng suffered so much and shw didn't even deserve any of those 😭

Yeah, I can understand that heartbreaking feeling after watching a sad ending. It does make you sad for days. Most of my friends refuse to watch dramas that have sad endings too. I think I'm pretty much the only one who still watches a drama despite the ending because weirdly the dramas that I've loved mostly have sad endings.

Yes, I really love their acting too. It's not often that I see young actors give out such good performances. Like you, I couldn't find another drama that can surpass this. I watch a lot of dramas but for it to make me fall in love like this is rare. It actually took me a long time until I found an awesome drama like GMP. Normally I just like some dramas, find them good but that's it. I don' become a fan like I did with this one :)

This is my all time “Tragic Heartbreaking Star-Crossed Lovers” drama. It’s been 2years since I watched this but every time I hear the OST, I still feel the angst pulled thru my heartstrings. If only I could drink from the river of oblivion to forget the pain, so I recommended this drama to my friends and we all share the grief 😅

Mine too. This drama totally topped my favorite dramas list and is definitely the best drama of 2019 for me. The leads are currently nominated for awards but competition is tight because other nominees are very popular artists. I do hope our leads get some awards for their outstanding performance.

I'm talking about The 26th Huading Awards. He was one of the nominees for the best actor award. Since GMP was a web drama so they get less nominations compared to the dramas that aired on tv. I hope that both of our main leads will win something for their roles at least.

Goodbye My Princess is a really good drama so I hope you will give it a chance. You might be heartbroken after the final episode but there's a modern epilogue where they have their happy ending. I think years of watching Chinese dramas with sad endings has made my heart stronger so I don't really mind sad endings. I am way too used to tragic endings now lol
