Hey guys, thanks for your amazing comments! To answer a few questions that I saw here and elsewhere, off the top of my head: - You can download the original mod file here: markuskaarlonen.com/space-debris - Space Debris is a strictly four channel mod. This remaster probably makes it sound slightly bigger due to some subtle reverb and other processing I added, but it's still the original four channels playing, nothing more. - For the remaster, I rendered the original channels using OpenMPT with sinc interpolation. This is technically "better" than what the Amiga did, but of course a bit of the original charm might be lost, due to Amiga's resampling and D/A converters etc. adding their own flavour to the sound. It would be super interesting to actually record the mod directly from Amiga's audio outputs... I even have my old Amiga 500 in the closet, just no idea if it still works. :D
I have a question, do I have permission to remix your song? Not only that, may I take the photo of your face and put in my video to show the original artist?
@@MarkusKaarlonenMusic Ah, I actually decided against putting your face cuz i didnt know when you'd reply :/ but anyway, my remix is up on my channel! I want you to see it :D
Good luck remixing it. I've tried a few times. Captain's work was really hard to top. The mod scene was open to continual improvement. If you were going to remix something you had better do a good job. Most of us were amateurs playing with our computer keyboards at the time, and Markus was a real musician and it showed.
I've always remembered this MOD and recently I played this for my two boys. It's my all-time favorite MOD! EPIC! Still get chills every time I hear it!
No need to imagine that. That was youth for many of us. HippoPlayer playing Captain, Jester, Groo, Heatbeat and other guys’ mods on shuffle and browsing & chatting away endless nights on BBS boards. Good times in the 1990’s.
@@ToniKoobsolutely agree. Me and a friend of mine used to scour the CU Amiga magazine cover disks for tracks similar to this. Yes you'd go a couple of months with nothing, then all of a sudden you'd find a banger. That's how I found the original of this.
@tonikoo absolutely agree luckily I had a friend who introduced me to this wonderful universe of songs and this song was my favourite, and still is among the mods. I played it over and over and over again. Still, I happen to play it. I believe it was back in 1995 when I first was introduced to this song. The original mod file also had the channels divided in such a way that part of the song was in the left loudspeaker and the rest was in the right speaker - that was really cool. Somewhat like they produced songs back in the 50s.
This remains the absolute best 4-channel mod I've ever heard. An all time classic. Every time I hear your keyboards in a Poets of the Fall song, I remember that this was the first product of your talent I ever heard. Superb.
This track is my all time favorite (followed by Second Reality by Purple Motion) and a huge inspiration for me to start making music in the 90s. Just want to say thanks for making it, sharing the remastered version, and for the wonderful high quality spacesynth remix. Wishing you all the best!
NO WAY, YOU WERE THE GUY WHO MADE THIS!? This is one of the best songs ever made, and perfectly encapsulates this era of music/MPT music in a nutshell!
This was the song that inspired me to start making my own MOD music back in the mid 1990s. Such a powerful sound - yet so detailed and carefully arranged. Definitely a MOD I just kept coming back to over and over again back in the day. It was really moving to hear this again.
I discovered this song back in 1994 or something like that, on some random FTP archive. I may have listened to it a 1000 times probably and I always wondered were it came from. While doing some cleanup on my PC recently, I ran into it... Well, nothing more to add. I googled it and... I still love it. MODs... ❤ Like some SID treasures out of an old C64, I believe it will still be in my head in decades
One of my favorite tracks from 1991. Played on my AT-80286 PC back then using a digital-to-analog circuit (built on a breadboard) that output through the centronics parallel printer port & then through the D/A which then went through 2 stereo audio amp I.C.'s out to 2 speakers laid on top of 2 empty Quaker Oats cylindrical containers as the speaker cabinets. This was obviously because addon sound cards were still in their infancy, somewhat new & expensive back then. I think I still have that breadboard still populated, more or less, with the same circuit, after all these 3 decades. I even made a copy of Space Debris but with a couple of sample changes with the lead synths, but that was about it. Anyway, I also still have my Commodore 64 systems, but they are in storage at the moment. Thank you Captain for your music. :)
Thanks you Captain for this, brings back memories from 90's when I listened this by PC. I had this fabulous tune as ring stone few years ago, created mp3 from mod file(dont remember where I downloaded it). Still when I play this tune, time to time I check my phone, if it is ringing.
This and Beyond Music. Forever. Holy mother of God this hits hard. Do you even know how much you mean to people of this generation? So many kids that grew up with your music? I hope you understand how much you mean
YT just recommended this video for me. Still love to listen to those old school MODs; they just don't get old. Some commenters mentioned Beyond Music which is another memorable classic which along with Space Debris made it into the Best Of The Amiga Scene CD. I also like Broken Dreams.
this is my first and forever favourite electronic tune since a kid. i still remember the impact it made at the time and still today. its EPIC thanks bro for bringuing it out. TOP 1
Markus, great thanks for this wonderful, perfect mod, best of the best. More than 30 years of enjoying it on A500, PCs, home HiFi and car audio. My two young daughters also like it very much, both "classic" and spacesynth version. You gave extraordinary gift to the world!
Thank you for this unforgettable music Markus Captain! I'm not sure if you know, but your song is pretty popular in Brazil, because it was used in a Mega Drive emulator for PlaysStation2 that a lot of people have played in their childhood or adolescence.
Please, please, PLEASE do this with more Amiga mods. Some Fleshbrain, specifically Neodrink would be amazing. Either way this seems like the definitive way to experience this tune. Amazing! Thank you!
This is awesome! I also used to track mods, though I didn't start until the late 90's, using FastTracker 2 on PC (running under DOS at the time). There were still limitations even then, but nothing compared to the limitations you had to work with on the Amiga, and Space Debris blows all the mods I ever did out of the water, even though I had a lot more channels to work with, longer samples, and better bitrates. 😂😅 I didn't recognize this song from my mod days (I also went back in my old mod collection to see if I had downloaded it at some point, but it doesn't look like I ever came across it), but I'd love to hear the other mods you released from back then, and maybe even discover that I have one of them tucked away on an old floppy somewhere. 💜
If your tracks were ever distributed, or if you hung out in the IRC tracker channels back in the days, there is a good chance I have copies. I have a pretty large archive that spans 30+ years. As for Captain's other amazing tracks, one sticks in my mind - Mickus.s3m.
I don't know the track but still get nostalgia vibes. Came here from Ahoy's video and I'm glad I did because this so cool to hear now that I know how much work went in to it. Thanks for the upload
Yeah! Finally!!! Amiga Times ruled... And i liked the MODs and their ispiration for other People. Nice That you came in with a refreshed version of your own title "Space Debris". One of my Faves....
Hey Markus! Apparently you and I had the same idea only a few weeks apart. I also did a redo/reengineer/remaster of Space Debris. My redo is possibly a little more involved, but still uses all the original sounds from the original ProTracker(?) 4-channel SPACE.MOD file. I used OpenMPT to export separate tracks 'per instrument' at 48KHz 32bit FP and then laid all the tracks into REAPER and remixed it with a light dusting of reverb and/or delay on instruments that I felt would benefit from it. The 48KHz 32bit FP WAV file was then mastered in iZotope Ozone and dithered to 48KHz 16bit. I originally remixed this track back in March of 2016 and sent that to you. Not sure if you remember (and you'd be forgiven if you didn't). I'll shoot you a message on your website to see about getting this more recent remix update to you. Next up - Beyond Music (BEYOND.MOD)! Holiday Blessings to you, your family and the whole POTF gang!
This is such a marvellous tune! I first heard _Space Debris_ in an Amstrad CPC demo called _Digital Orgasm_ and I was mesmerised by it - and the demo itself was beautiful as well! It was only about 25 years later that I discovered that it was in fact an Amiga tune and I learnt its name.
