    Your videos are an incredible resource! They are detailed and unapologetically full on nerd.
    When I came up, as a self taught engineer, my only resources were books and a band! I'd show up early to my house gig and try stuff, the band would show up, and I keep experimenting.
    If these videos were available at that time, I could have saved, no joke, years of development.
    Thank you!

    This is very close, as owner of Roxanne IEM custom mold. I was impressed that bass isn’t that big like other people says about them.
    I own Lola’s IEM and I feels the bass sounds bigger on them, compare to Roxanne!

    Awesome little series of videos! I noticed that the Stealthsonics C9 have some kind of buzzing in the mid-high range. It's almost like a distorted sound. Am I the only one hearing this? Listening on ATH-M50x headphones.

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat  3 роки тому +2

      That is actually part of the recording, not the in ears. I believe maybe distortion on the bass.

      Hmmm, not hearing that buzzing in the original track or the UE, just the C9 Pro - I wonder if it is vibrational?

      Interesting, I will go back and listen. If I recall, if it is what I and thinking, I could hear it in the original track, a bit of fuzz that follows the bass. Those mtx 50 headphones as I recall, are pretty strong in the LF and not a lot of sparkle, but sound good.
      If ya get a chance, try listening on a different playback device and let me know. And also I will check it out.

    • @toohardtohandle
      @toohardtohandle 3 роки тому

      Actually, I hear it on the Roxanne too. Perhaps it is a little more subdued on the UE and the additional brightness of the source masks it a little. Perhaps testament to presence and clarity more than anything?
      I will have a listen on different phones, sure.

      I just received a pair of JH Sharona’s upgrading from 64 A3’s and I’m blown away, at how much better these sound. With that being said my 64’s were great ears, and when it comes to professional iems now you really can’t go wrong with any custom mold over 3 drivers. It largely should be dependent on what your preference, budget, and or what your artist is using. Now things that differentiate between my 2 sets. My 64’s are very flat and a really good monitor for if I’m doing a mix down of a live record to use as a reference for what it’ll sound like through most earphones. Another thing is the apex module which in itself has benefits and drawbacks. Benefits being I can listen to them on an airplane with changing altitudes and have no pressure issues, as well as listen for hours on end with no ear fatigue. The drawbacks, wax can easily get in the space the module resides in, and the module itself kills bass response. Now for my JH Sharona’s. The fit is much more isolated than my 64’s because JH actually fills your entire canal which is a good thing, I don’t feel like they’re gonna fall out, or lose isolation. These ears I use for live show mixing because they’re a friggin PA in my head! Tuned very naturally sounding, and have a sub low end response like no other ear I’ve heard! The drawbacks are they’re incredibly huge. If you don’t have big ears then you may not be able to get these simply because they may not be able to fit all the drivers in the mold (16 a side). Another is that there is ear fatigue after a long while. Hope this helps!

    Is what looks like a HF shelf cut in the response of all these IEM's or is it a limitation of the testing rig? It being so consistant has me thrown to have such a noticable difference between the tested IEMs and the source that would make me triple check the setup with maybe a pair of normal headphones or speaker to make sure there isn't a consistant bias built into the test.
    Or they just really don't reproduce much over 12KHz which I find interesting unless you are using a beltpack and transmitter in the test rig and the UHF frequency response is what we are seeing.
    If you have another video explaining the rig setup it probably has my answer.

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat  3 роки тому

      The hf roll off is part of the iem. There is a 19k carrier tone that the transmitter use to transmit in stereo. So they need to cut hf so no audio is sent at or near 19K

    Sir, how to measure the frequency ranges? Yup iem. tq sir!

  • @BrianSimmons
    @BrianSimmons 3 роки тому +1

    10:13 - Wouldn't the phase response to something like a bass rig be dependent on the distance to the bass rig and the audio wave coming from it. Wouldn't there be certain distances where the IEM would be in phase with the rig and other distances where it would be out of phase with the rig? Wouldn't this be true regardless of the polarity of the IEM themselves? Please excuse the questions. I'm not an expert and just I'm just trying to grasp these concepts. Thanks Dave!

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat  3 роки тому +2

      If captured accurately by the mic or DI box, the phase sent to the in ear will relatively closely match the phase of the output of the bass rig.
      Yes, distance from the bass rig will mean the phase heard from the in ear will be time offset earlier than the sound felt from the bass rig located at some distance. That said, 55 hz has a wavelength of 20 feet or so. So if you stand near the bass rig or a monitor reproducing the bass most lower frequencies will tend to phase sum if the in ears are in polarity and phase cancel if out of polarity. Same with a drummer. An in polarity I bear will offer sound that is in polarity with the acoustic sound of the drums.
      I have 4 public videos on polarity that may be of interest.
      I think this Google search should show them
      www.google.com/search?q=dave+rat+polarity+youtube&client=ms-android-hms-tmobile-us&sxsrf=ALeKk03pFvk8G0a3cKj_GDAvs0eq0vv7rg%3A1617031013384&ei=Ze9hYO_rFu7O0PEP99K-iAc&oq=dave+rat+polarity+youtube&gs_lcp=ChNtb2JpbGUtZ3dzLXdpei1zZXJwEAM6BQghEKABOggIIRAWEB0QHjoHCCEQChCgAVCZHVi0TWCNVWgCcAB4AIAB1QKIAaYRkgEHMS40LjUuMZgBAKABAcABAQ&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-serp

    • @BrianSimmons
      @BrianSimmons 3 роки тому +1

      @@DaveRat That makes sense and certainly the long waveform makes it unlikely that the "out of polarity" IEM could be made to be in phase by standing at a certain spot. So making the IEM in the same polarity as everything else would be important. Thanks again!

    Not to be 'that guy' - but that buzz/rattle is evident on close listening earlier than I mentioned - check 2:35
    Here's where I noticed it upon first listening - 5:17. I would have chalked it up to years of hard use, but the rattle stuck out part three too, always on the stage left/house right fixture. Very prominent through 5:43. Maybe most evident at 5:41. Again, masked in the prechorus/chorus.
    Interestingly, barely audible at 10:58. But audible.

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat  3 роки тому

      All good and appreciated. Have not had time yet to go back and listen. Probably the mic is having an issue causing it. That said, I constantly tested and compared freq response to stored response and to the other unit and the freq response stayed close and consistent.
      I think for these vids where mainly people should be listening for tonal differential, the buzzing should not be overly an issue.
      That said, I will definitely sort it before the next tests

      @@DaveRat I agree wholeheartedly. The character of each unit came through despite the quirk. Nothing in this noted anomaly detracts from the value of this comparison.
      I am a little puzzled why the apparent mechanical noise was not apparent on the Smaart display. I would have thought the measurements would have borne out the apparent noise. I need to ponder on that a bit. Could be interesting to see if there is a drop from expected coherence at the points where it seemed evident.

      Hmmm, well if you hear a 6 k peak in the video on a set of in ears you will also hear a 6k peak listening directly to the in ears.
      If the in ears sound dull comparitively in the vid, they will also sound dull if you listen to them directly.
      Now whether that info is of use or value to you is completely separate.
      It relies on you ability to compare while also factoring out any biases that your listening speakers induce.
      If you hear a peak at 1k on everything and on my voice, then it is your speakers, for example.
      That said, I do agree that not everyone has these deductive skills.
      For me, I own and use or have used all the in ears tested. Being able to see on smaart and record the sound that the various in ears create has been quite interesting.
      And, realizing that the in ears that are closer to flat also were the ears that I preferred, was interesting as well.

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat  3 роки тому

      Interesting and yes, would have been useful if the issue showed on smaart.
      I am thinking that when I repeatedly pressed in ears into the tm2 and the airtight foam, it could have been putting extreme stresses on the mic diaphragm. Maybe a slight tear.
      I will talk with audix and also send the unit back to be tested.
      And thank you!

  • @MichaelBruceTaos
    @MichaelBruceTaos 3 роки тому +1

    Hey Dave, when you bypass the outer ear gain (pinna gain) by using IEMs, you need to add back in those frequencies as tuning. Generally starting at 1k and peaking somehwere around 2.5 or 3k. Let me know how this strikes you?

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat  3 роки тому +1

      I've heard that line of reasoning and makes sense but also, if I listen to in ears with those peaks, they sound edgy and peaky in those regions when compared to flat sounding headphones.
      I am not convinced that adding those peaks truly results in a flatter and more linear perception of the sound.
      I think there may be more going on and while the peaks my be technically correct, the peaks are at differing frequencies and levels for various ears, which peaks are correct? Which are to much or at the wrong freq? Is it better to have the in ears flat and EQ the peaks as needed or to build the peaks in at maybe the right or wrong spots so they need to be re EQ'ed to fix them?

    • @MichaelBruceTaos
      @MichaelBruceTaos 3 роки тому

      @@DaveRat My personal IEM target graph: nextcloud.taosforum.com/s/KGHNBPc5XsPKqoA It's somewhere between Diffuse Field and Harman tuning. And for the record, I do a bit of mixing myself and the IEMs that sound most like the studio monitors I have which are JBL LSR308 and Yamaha HS8 are the Softears RSV (reference sound 5) which has about 10db of Pinna gain centered around 2.8k The key thing here is that should be the highest peak aside from low subbass.

      Hmmm, introducing EQ will alter phase and yes, very well could EQ various ears to be flat and then compare sound.
      Also doing a distortion measurement could be interesting.

      Everything else they do is pretty sub standard and they have a reputation for having really harsh high mids, however this particular set stands out from the rest.
