    Arguably, the origin of the ever popular "Shave and a Haircut, Two Bits!" This little melody is engrained in so many of us. Also featured in 1939's "Shave and a Haircut, Shampoo!" by Dan Shapiro, Lestor Lee, and Milton Berle.

      Ok, now tell us the meaning of the title. What the heck is a Darktown (Negro, in the vernacular of the time, perhaps?) Cakewalk? I am very curious...

    • @VizuosoMusic
      @VizuosoMusic  4 місяці тому +2

      @lplzydeco you are correct that this title is certainly a product of its time, yet not excusing it anyway whatsoever. Darktown refers to an area primarily inhabited by African Americans and cakewalk refers to a dancing contest among African Americans where cake was the prize.

      That’s a great question! Probably just because it’s an incredible catchy tune that got stuck in people’s heads so they knocked to the rhythm.

      I recently discovered it might have come from war, actually. American prisoners used it for communication purposes to signify when it was safe to talk, or so I read

      @@VizuosoMusic yup! It's so cheery.. Sounds similar to playful vaudeville music, is that the same as cakewalk/ragtime music?

      It looks like it’s from the same time period, and there are many similar themes, all of which are precursors for Jazz. I haven’t heard of that music/style before!

    He's right. The jingle "A shave and a haircut: two bits!" originates from a ragtime piece from 1899 entitled "At A Darktown Cakewalk" by Charles Hale (1899). It would also later appear as a bridge in another ragtime piece called "Hot Scotch Rag" by H. A. Fischler (1911).
