Don't know how many of these dust ball planets I've been to, but you know it's a series of bad decisions that leads to each one of them. They start with terraformers doing a half-assed job, selling the world off to a colony corp as soon as the atmo is deemed "breathable". Then the colony corp signs desperate earthers with no better prospects to settle the place, one stop shop, everything you need at one low price. The corp sends along cheap pre-packaged kits of seed stock; some might grow, but most won't. No guarantees live stock will survive either. Half a generation later, instead of half-starved earthers living on the dole, they're half-starved dirt farmers living in hard scrabble villages, each fighting against their neighbors for whatever wilting crops dare to poke their heads above alien soil. Eventually, the feuding gets so bad one of those villages will decide to scrape together whatever coins they have between them, and hire a sheriff. That's where I come in...
@@SpaceBanjoMusic I have been prepping more of an almost steampunk fantasy one, although instead of steam or coal, the tech is based on a form of magic called Animancy, where living metal vehicles with animal-like characteristics (e.g. shiny snake strain) are animated using power forged from memories. The main actual plot thrust was gonna be around Monsterhearts, which are these kinda jewel-like globules that power constructed monsters who roam the wilderness and beset the nations that use Animancy. It'd start with a basic monster hunt merc job via a faction of monster-hunting mercenaries (the "Hearthounds") and proceed from there in a more sandbox fashion. All that being said, I am famously fickle when it comes to stuff I write, and I've already started putting down general ideas for a space cowboy campaign, hahaha. I've had the idea of gunslinger wizards doing quickdraw duels with wands for a long time, and I'll probably throw in potion-bottle pistols. Obviously, the spaceships would be flying trains.
