I even notice in college and pro football how every routine play damn near ends with a personal celebration. It's been out of hand. The 'letting out the yell' when you make a good play makes me think those guys have lots of anger inside. In the 1980s and 1990s you would often see players smiling and laughing during games when things were going their way. The hi-five is dead now and it is a sign of joy and intentional comradery. It's getting worse but this all started about 10 to 15 years ago.
I am 67, and have been playing basketball since the mid '60's. I still do. I am in excellent shape for my age. Anyway, all I see in today's game is players standing around, while they take turns going one on one and show their flashy moves. Very little passing or teamwork. It's sad, really.
@@jonnagel7022 It will not happen; In fact, expect the opposite in the future, right now people are getting tired of referees calling technical fouls, and the professional leagues (NBA) have already been criticized for relaxing their rules and sanctions in order to appeal to the younger audience. Although some technical fouls are/were unnecessary or even stupid (Tim Duncan and his laughter), but I understand that technical fouls exist for a reason.

On top of that they have basically banished defense from the game by discouraging clean, competitive, physical play. Every year they introduce a few more rules meant to soften the game. The truth is they don’t view it as a competition or sport anymore, but a business. They are all making so much money, they just want to make it as easy as possible to get a paycheck and go home, even if that makes sport less fun to play. The players get fewer injuries so they are happy. The owners get less risk so they happy. The fans don’t like it and aren’t watching, but they have replaced us with foreign eyeballs, particularly Chinese. Corporations usually deploy the strategy that they should offer the public the least quality of product they will accept while still paying for that product. This enables them to maximize their profits, which is why so many products these days seem to feel like rip offs in some way or other. The NBA has taken the same approach
I was taught to play basketball by my uncle, my father, and a old white basketball coach. Just from what I see now the TEACHING is different. They learn from the internet more than going to try something new on their own
No, it's the folks raising them to disrespect others; this includes their peers. Swag is one thing but stare-downs, flexing, excessive celebrations after one bucket, running on the court after one good dunk. It's turning into real life baseketball out there.

Whenever I teach my son or daughter to play basketball or any sport it’ll be the way my dad taught me, he always told me to show sportsmanship above all and that’s the way I played, my dad never talked back to the ref over something, or yelled at me if I did something wrong on the court or ever forced me to play ball 24/7. When I think back to those days I realize my dad really loved the game and it was just a son and father enjoying basketball. Now I’m 21 with 2 semesters left til I graduate with bachelors.
Yes, it's absolutely abysmal to see the lack of sportsmanship these days. And before anyone says anything, it's kids from all backgrounds. And as many stated already, it's a parenting thing for me, but also it's what they see today's players do. My father would have beat the you know what out of me for taunting someone like that. It's one thing to play hard and compete, it's another to try to intentionally embarrass someone. No room for that.

Thing is most of the kids don't even know why they're starting shit or taunting, they just do it because it's all fun for them. My wife was a score keeper for high school basketball as part of her required teacher duties. Because of bad parent behavior, the player seating, scoring, and other required support for the game was eventually moved to one side of the court and the spectators were on the other side. It created a nice buffer zone.
I knocked out a lot of people back in my days from balling. Things can get emotional in basketball. We balled, we talked trash... When it got personal, we fought. Then afterwards we became good friends. No hard feelings. The difference is, these kids are just pretending to be hard. Don't be a poser, respect the game. It's a team sport. It's not always about you. Remember that!!!
I coached 1 season of 3rd/4th grade boys basketball and after layups at just practice they would celebrate and talk shit to other kids practicing on other side of court. They couldn’t pay attention longer than 5 seconds. The kids even complained about playing time and getting touches in games as if they were any good aka they were absolute trash since none of them play sports besides sports video games. They all acted like entitled kids and parents didn’t help either.

There was no context to the game either, from what ive heard they were playing for last place in a qualifying tournament so the game had no real meaning. Thus them fooling around.

My generation (Millennials) are mostly to blame for this. Most don’t wanna admit it, but it was our thug sh*t throughout the 90s-2000s that these lil dudes grew up watching. We had a lil more respect, because we still had the WW2 generation hanging around (our grandparents) but after they started dying in big numbers? The stability was left up to us- the thug generation- and our uncles/older cousins- the GenX generation who were about drugs and dealing with 70s-80s trauma.

I’m getting kind of tired of hearing excuses for bad behavior from athletes, like “Well, he’s just so passionate.” Passion is great, bad behavior is just bad., and “Winning at all costs” isn’t really winning. The pro athletes -or the NBA itself- need to stop all the flopping and related nonsense, because it sends the terrible message that cheating is ok…as long as it works. It will filter down, as it always does.
"What is the cause of the new stare down culture?" 1) Parents are teaching and demanding good values like humility and sportsmanship? 2) League officials are too tolerant of it? 3) Then, refs don't intervene enough (after one warning, technical fouls might help)? 4) Coaches are too tolerant of it? 5) Too much support among peers/fans for this sort of lack of sportsmanship?

Finally, I've been saying this, everyone just wants attention and highlights. Cookie cutter mold for most young player nobody understands roles and how important everyone on the team is.
Exactly, everyone wants to put up 30 points a night and not worry about anything else. Fuck shooting percentage, good shot selection, taking 40 shots to get 50 points, defense, and everything else. As long as you score a lot it must mean you had a good game. Same with fans. Most casuals don't know anything about how a player plays defense or does the little things to help a team win.
I'm very, very worried about the health and longevity of youth basketball players, especially those who make it to professional basketball. AAU + high school + camps + etc is adding a ton of wear and tear to young athletes across sports and it's a very concerning situation. I saw a 13 year old baseball player getting Tommy John surgery, it's insane.
as a 13 year old kid who plays a lot of basketball, I could tell you that all the celebrating we do is because we want to be like our favorite NBA players, so we mimic everything about them
And that is the perfect age to learn to become a leader not a follower. Just because your favorite NBA player treats others with disrespect and taunts does not mean it's a requirement of the game

teenagers get paid to play proffesional sports like football/soccer in Europe under apprenticeships and youth schemes etc so why not basketball makes sense and its a good introduction to employment as well and gets them used to contracts and having responsibility. As for the trash talk and the disrespect teaching them to be humble would see greater athletes but the pros arent exactly all humble. Just have to hope as they mature they will become professional athletes in every sense of the word.
Nothing to do with the generation of kids!! It's the adults in their lives. They are 100% responsible. Coaches, parents, care givers etc...If I was coaching and my players pulled any of that crap their behind would be on that bench.
My gym that used to have two pristine hardwood basketball courts has gotten rid of one recently for pickleball, and doesn't seem all that interested in keeping the other anymore. The whole vibe on the court now is so confrontational, argumentative, flamboyant, and selfish. Its a brand of basketball that I can't enjoy playing, and I hate what's happened to it.
Parents need to step up and tell their young kids you’re not gonna have this kind of attitude 678 910 year-old kids watching the UA-camrs and they want to act like them that’s got to stop… refs need to start calling everything you look at somebody wrong or yell in their face technical foul, it’ll stop quickly.

I coached for 33 years, played 4 years in college and coached college ball.....this game is trash now . I walked away and couldn't be happier. Every game, every possession there is disrespect to this game by today's players. They disrespect their own teammates, their opponents, the referees, the coaches, the fans and the game. Can't just play the game and shake the opponents hand after can we?

Basketball has been ruined for a while now. Started with carrying the ball on every dribble. Then, it allowed the euro step, the step back shot, and all the parents getting in the way.
People/Grown ups keep saying that today's kids are soft, weak, blah, blah, blah. And now they are proving in other ways that they are not, and they have their game, their quickness, and the strength to back it up and anyone can get it. I'm proud of these young people proving to the world that they got their own going on and they deserve their shine and it's their time. So grown ups, stop complaining and let these kids do what it do for their generation. We did it for ours! OUR GAME IS OVER!
I'm 18 And I have so many regrets thinking acting that way was cool. How does a staredown help anybody? Is this really toughness? Yelling and getting angry ain't toughness. If anything, it shows these people my age are ticking time bombs. They can't and WON'T control themselves. I've seen a lot of talented people who don't throw up trash in your face after every play, and get back up to fight again. None of this is necessary. Honestly this is why I'm starting to hate playing competitive games. I'm tired of somebody screaming at me and calling me a bunch of slurs. There ain't no fun in this. It's not even a competition. It's everyone tryna diss and make a fool of the other. Girl slaps.

As you get older, you are going to face certain types of challenges from people in way more ways than a stare down that can totally effect and infect your life. And if you are not made/taught to become self aware, those challenges may cause more harm to you than you think. Let me give you a reference. I don't know if you ever heard of Barry Sanders. He was the greatest running back for the Detroit Lions. He played from the 1989 till 1998-1999 season. He was literally one of the greatest overall runnings backs that was way ahead of his time, that impacted today's way of running the football. Back in that day, the competition of football was very brutal and the stare downs and the fights those players got into was brutal and in your face. Barry Sanders was a very humble guy from the South (I believe), that let his game do all the talking. The defense from the opposing teams feared his gift and at every turn, they tried to stop him and Barry gave them a very hard time. And every time Barry ran the ball, whether if it was a first down, or not, or a touchdown, he wouldn't celebrate, he wouldn't give the opposing players dirty looks and yells, he would just make the play and give the ref the football and rinse and repeat. And he became enshrined into the hall of fame because of his illustrious career. That's a very short version. you should check out his biography. I think it will do you very well. My point of all this, I'd rather see people's disrespect in my face instead of subtled, sneaky and behind my back. Those young people who do the stare downs are not ticking time bombs, they are just being possibly over emotional, because they may not have any other outlets that will allow them to express their inner emotions. You can't let what they do bother you. You can't let other people's emotions and actions divert the person you may want to become. Don't ever let another person sabotage your future. That's life! Your only responsibility is to become the greatest person/athlete you can become, and let your game do all the talking for you. Let your greatness shine and stare them down. Let your greatness humble them as they watch you do your thing. Trust me, when they do watch you do your thing in whatever sport you play, trust me, they will check themselves, because they know when they face you, they have to be ready for their lesson. So make them not stare you down! They only way you can do that is by shutting them down! Trust me, it works in all facets of life. Great luck to you!

Kids see people doing ridiculous celebrations after every bucket or fighting over the smallest things, and they think it's normal and copy that behavior. And neither their parents or coaches care about it and don't teach them what real sportsmanship is.
They repeat what they see. Somehow it has become a habit to mock or make fun of the opponent after a bucket. It could be corrected with great and formative officiating..... otherwise Hockey rules shall be implemented to send fighters to a ten minutes penalty box.
Its absolutely disgusting. I remember yelling at my kid and threatening to bench her myself for taunting the other team after hitting some dance move after a 3-pointer at the top of the key. That ish made me furious. No honor with many who do not teach their kids the same value. Basketball is not a right; it's a privilege to play. That's why you see many of the top players are international players now. These kids and their families better wake up. They are being phased out like the MLB did to many US-born players. Not only do I blame social media but the the families who see these kids as possible meal tickets. Its time to regulate AAU and similar associations and it needs to be spearheaded by Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour. AAU wasn't available in the 70s/80s and only the best kids were invited to play at Nike Basketball Camp. Maybe it's time to get back to that. There are a lot of kids who are not good enough to make a team on an AAU team instead. Meanwhile you have adult coaches many of which see the kids who aren't good enough but have families with disposable income paying for the kids who take up most of the minutes. Base it on merit. Maybe it's time to limit the # of families who can watch live games. The rest can stay home to watch via live stream.
I don’t think kids are necessarily angrier, it’s just all caught on camera now. Parents need to chill at all games, doesn’t matter if you’re an NBA, NFL, MLB, or NHL athlete. Let the game play out. Teach your kids how to lose and use that as motivation.

I'm nearly 30 and if you hung on the rim or banged out it was an auto tech.... nevermind the stare downs and shimmying over opponents.... we used to help opposing players up or dap them up when someone took a charge. There was definitely a whole lot more respect. Don't get me wrong there were a few taunting incidences, but for the most part, it was "good take homie", "nice shot my guy" and/or "good call ref"
My boy has autism and adhd. He did this a few times before even he, with terrible ability to read social cues, knew it was unacceptable. Difference is we live in Australia where kids, parents and officials dont tolerate it. Have 3 state players in our competition and all are the height of respect. If any of my players acted this way id bench them the whole game and so would every coach in my competition. Even if it means we dont win. Theres no winning if you dont win with respect.
I have 3 sons. 7,5, and 3. They love basketball and I’ve been teaching them for a year. The 7 and 5 year old played for 3 v 3 league this past summer and did fantastic. But I don’t allow any showboating at all. They show great sportsmanship win or lose. I’m trying to teach my kids all the extras ain’t necessary. Just go give somebody buckets and be humble. Lol!

Usually when they are kids they tend to play with more discipline and respect.. then it starts to fade away -with many of them- when playing at college or even more being pro's. Today is all the way around: they start playing without discipline, being all cocky, disrespecting the opponent. 🙄 Kids used to salute and appologize when they made a hard fould or if the pitcher hit a player or whatever you name the sport... right now the values are thru the floor. Where are the parents ? To enforce the discipline honestly is ridiculous
Pretty simple solution. Officials need to do their job and call technicals for unsporting behavior. Second technical, the player is ejected. Multiple ejections should then carry suspensions. Take away playing time and the attitudes will change, guaranteed.
To be fair, the stare down has always been a part of the game. If you have ever played basketball competitively, you know that there's a psychological aspect to intimidating and dominating your opponent.

Yes, it's absolutely abysmal to see the lack of sportsmanship these days. And before anyone says anything, it's kids from all backgrounds. And as many stated already, it's a parenting thing for me, but also it's what they see today's players do. My father would have beat the you know what out of me for taunting someone like that. It's one thing to play hard and compete, it's another to try to intentionally embarrass someone. No room for that.

My wife was a score keeper for high school basketball as part of her required teacher duties. Because of bad parent behavior, the player seating, scoring, and other required support for the game was eventually moved to one side of the court and the spectators were on the other side. It created a nice buffer zone.
I knocked out a lot of people back in my days from balling.
Things can get emotional in basketball.
We balled, we talked trash... When it got personal, we fought.
Then afterwards we became good friends. No hard feelings.
The difference is, these kids are just pretending to be hard.

I coached 1 season of 3rd/4th grade boys basketball and after layups at just practice they would celebrate and talk shit to other kids practicing on other side of court. They couldn’t pay attention longer than 5 seconds. The kids even complained about playing time and getting touches in games as if they were any good aka they were absolute trash since none of them play sports besides sports video games. They all acted like entitled kids and parents didn’t help either.
Put them to real work in the hot sun. Boys will fold.

My generation (Millennials) are mostly to blame for this. Most don’t wanna admit it, but it was our thug sh*t throughout the 90s-2000s that these lil dudes grew up watching. We had a lil more respect, because we still had the WW2 generation hanging around (our grandparents) but after they started dying in big numbers? I’m getting kind of tired of hearing excuses for bad behavior from athletes, like “Well, he’s just so passionate.” Passion is great, bad behavior is just bad., and “Winning at all costs” isn’t really winning. The pro athletes -or the NBA itself- need to stop all the flopping and related nonsense, because it sends the terrible message that cheating is ok…as long as it works. It will filter down, as it always does.

Exactly, everyone wants to put up 30 points a night and not worry about anything else. Fuck shooting percentage, good shot selection, taking 40 shots to get 50 points, defense, and everything else. As long as you score a lot it must mean you had a good game. Same with fans. Most casuals don't know anything about how a player plays defense or does the little things to help a team win.

I'm very, very worried about the health and longevity of youth basketball players, especially those who make it to professional basketball. AAU + high school + camps + etc is adding a ton of wear and tear to young athletes across sports and it's a very concerning situation. I saw a 13 year old baseball player getting Tommy John surgery, it's insane.
I really do think it’s the parents.

teenagers get paid to play proffesional sports like football/soccer in Europe under apprenticeships and youth schemes etc so why not basketball makes sense and its a good introduction to employment as well and gets them used to contracts and having responsibility. As for the trash talk and the disrespect teaching them to be humble would see greater athletes but the pros arent exactly all humble. Just have to hope as they mature they will become professional athletes in every sense of the word.

My gym that used to have two pristine hardwood basketball courts has gotten rid of one recently for pickleball, and doesn't seem all that interested in keeping the other anymore. The whole vibe on the court now is so confrontational, argumentative, flamboyant, and selfish. Its a brand of basketball that I can't enjoy playing, and I hate what's happened to it.
Parents need to step up and tell their young kids you’re not gonna have this kind of attitude 678 910 year-old kids watching the UA-camrs and they want to act like them that’s got to stop… refs need to start calling everything you look at somebody wrong or yell in their face technical foul, it’ll stop quickly.

I coached for 33 years, played 4 years in college and coached college ball.....this game is trash now . I walked away and couldn't be happier. Every game, every possession there is disrespect to this game by today's players. They disrespect their own teammates, their opponents, the referees, the coaches, the fans and the game. As an 18 year old young person like yourself, I do not expect for you to understand what I'm about to tell you, but I just want you to read this out.
As you get older, you are going to face certain types of challenges from people in way more ways than a stare down that can totally effect and infect your life. And if you are not made/taught to become self aware, those challenges may cause more harm to you than you think. Let me give you a reference.
I don't know if you ever heard of Barry Sanders. He was the greatest running back for the Detroit Lions. He played from the 1989 till 1998-1999 season. He was literally one of the greatest overall runnings backs that was way ahead of his time, that impacted today's way of running the football.
Back in that day, the competition of football was very brutal and the stare downs and the fights those players got into was brutal and in your face. Barry Sanders was a very humble guy from the South (I believe), that let his game do all the talking. The defense from the opposing teams feared his gift and at every turn, they tried to stop him and Barry gave them a very hard time. And every time Barry ran the ball, whether if it was a first down, or not, or a touchdown, he wouldn't celebrate, he wouldn't give the opposing players dirty looks and yells, he would just make the play and give the ref the football and rinse and repeat. And he became enshrined into the hall of fame because of his illustrious career. That's a very short version. you should check out his biography. I think it will do you very well.
My point of all this, I'd rather see people's disrespect in my face instead of subtled, sneaky and behind my back. Those young people who do the stare downs are not ticking time bombs, they are just being possibly over emotional, because they may not have any other outlets that will allow them to express their inner emotions. You can't let what they do bother you. You can't let other people's emotions and actions divert the person you may want to become. Don't ever let another person sabotage your future. That's life!
Your only responsibility is to become the greatest person/athlete you can become, and let your game do all the talking for you.
Let your greatness shine and stare them down.
Let your greatness humble them as they watch you do your thing.
Trust me, when they do watch you do your thing in whatever sport you play, trust me, they will check themselves, because they know when they face you, they have to be ready for their lesson.
So make them not stare you down! They only way you can do that is by shutting them down! Trust me, it works in all facets of life. Great luck to you!

It's definitely social media and the whole "highlight-culture" nowadays. Kids see people doing ridiculous celebrations after every bucket or fighting over the smallest things, and they think it's normal and copy that behavior. And neither their parents or coaches care about it and don't teach them what real sportsmanship is.
They repeat what they see. Somehow it has become a habit to mock or make fun of the opponent after a bucket. It could be corrected with great and formative officiating..... otherwise Hockey rules shall be implemented to send fighters to a ten minutes penalty box.

The ego of the kids and the egos of the “parents” is destroying sports. There is no team anymore, it’s only me, me, me.
Its absolutely disgusting. I remember yelling at my kid and threatening to bench her myself for taunting the other team after hitting some dance move after a 3-pointer at the top of the key. That ish made me furious. No honor with many who do not teach their kids the same value. Basketball is not a right; it's a privilege to play. That's why you see many of the top players are international players now. These kids and their families better wake up. They are being phased out like the MLB did to many US-born players. Not only do I blame social media but the the families who see these kids as possible meal tickets. Its time to regulate AAU and similar associations and it needs to be spearheaded by Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour. AAU wasn't available in the 70s/80s and only the best kids were invited to play at Nike Basketball Camp. Maybe it's time to get back to that. There are a lot of kids who are not good enough to make a team on an AAU team instead. Meanwhile you have adult coaches many of which see the kids who aren't good enough but have families with disposable income paying for the kids who take up most of the minutes. Base it on merit. Maybe it's time to limit the # of families who can watch live games. The rest can stay home to watch via live stream.

I'm nearly 30 and if you hung on the rim or banged out it was an auto tech.... nevermind the stare downs and shimmying over opponents.... we used to help opposing players up or dap them up when someone took a charge. There was definitely a whole lot more respect. Don't get me wrong there were a few taunting incidences, but for the most part, it was "good take homie", "nice shot my guy" and/or "good call ref"
My boy has autism and adhd. He did this a few times before even he, with terrible ability to read social cues, knew it was unacceptable. Difference is we live in Australia where kids, parents and officials dont tolerate it.
Have 3 state players in our competition and all are the height of respect.
If any of my players acted this way id bench them the whole game and so would every coach in my competition. Even if it means we dont win. Theres no winning if you dont win with respect.

I have 3 sons. 7,5, and 3. They love basketball and I’ve been teaching them for a year. The 7 and 5 year old played for 3 v 3 league this past summer and did fantastic. But I don’t allow any showboating at all. They show great sportsmanship win or lose. I’m trying to teach my kids all the extras ain’t necessary. Just go give somebody buckets and be humble. Lol!

Pretty simple solution. Officials need to do their job and call technicals for unsporting behavior. Second technical, the player is ejected. Multiple ejections should then carry suspensions. Take away playing time and the attitudes will change, guaranteed.
To be fair, the stare down has always been a part of the game. If you have ever played basketball competitively, you know that there's a psychological aspect to intimidating and dominating your opponent.
