The first thing I want to talk about is the obvious. This thing is heavy and bulky. It weighs in at almost 2 and a half pounds and is about the size of a college text book.

There was a time in my life when I would never even consider packing something like this. But here’s the deal. I really want to like this thing. Like I said in the intro I’m growing tired of freeze dried meals and I’m ready to expand my menu even if it means carrying a couple extra pounds.
That being said there are a few quwerks you should know about.
Number one: you have to use a whisperlight or similar backpacking stove that has a fuel line. Which I don’t own. I use a MSR pocket rocket which is not comparable with the oven. I had to borrow this whisper-light from a friend. So if you don’t own (or can’t get ahold of) a backpacking stove with a detached fuel canister...this oven may not be for you.
Number Two: it’s a bit of a fire hazard. The first time I used this I set it up on a wood pic-Nic Table which caught fire. The second time I used it I put it straight on the ground and cleared dead leaves and pine needles out of the way. But apparently didn’t get down to pure dirt because the ground still caught fire. So unless you are using the oven on straight dirt or rock...be prepared for a fire.
Number Three: it’s Hard to regulate oven temperature. You need to know this things gets hot fast. First time I used it it shot to well above 600 degrees with my stove on as low as I could get it. At first I tried to regulate temperature by turning on and off the stove...but this proved impractical. The oven is in the way of re-lighting the stove...and the oven is too hot to pick up to relight the stove...that way.
So instead I tried just opening the door to let some heat escape. Which seemed to work better. The only problem was with the door wide open and the stove turned all the way down I could get the temperature below 450 degrees. Which hadn’t been a problem so far. Things just cook a little faster. This may prove to be problematic with other recipes but I haven’t encountered one yet.
So the Bemco backpacking oven isn’t perfect, but what makes me like it is all the delicious possibilities. Like pizza, muffins, cookies, lasagna, enchiladas, fresh baked bread and more. Several of which I plan to make videos of. So don’t forget to subscribe and hit that bell.
So it’s not perfect But let’s face it, Backpacking gear is all about comprise. The Bemco backpacking oven is no different. So if you can get past some of its quwerks I think you might enjoy it. As for me time will tell how often the It actually makes its way into my pack.

Justin Outdoors Is it worth the bulk and weight? Would you carry it?

    • @JustinOutdoors

@@MyLifeOutdoors I polled a few people I was out with this evening and we agreed we'd carry it for something like a overnighter with a hike that's only a few hours long. So it'd be more of a novelty item, which I then become very price sensitive to - but $60 seems reasonable (if you have the correct stove)!

@@JustinOutdoors Yes It definitely seems best for short low mile hikes. But at the same time I carry a Helinox Zero (like you recently posted about) for comfort reasons. At first I was hesitent to carry the chair, but after a couple of trips I was sold. Maybe the oven will have the same effect. After a couple of nights of fresh baked goodies....who knows.

The oven temperature hard to control when you using the whisperlite (white gas) or even the XGK EX as they basically only allow user turn on and off.
If you want a precision control by using a multi fuel stove, you may consider to use Omnilite Ti or dragonfly.
I can hold the oven temperature on around 200F ~ 400F for a hot smoke purpose

I’ve been using a bigger remote feed alcohol stove with pretty good results. It’s just slightly slower to heat then the MSR but it’s still not out of control where it can’t be used pretty well

@@MyLifeOutdoors Many years ago when I used the outback oven with a whisperlite I figured out if you put very little pressure in the fuel can like 4 or 5 pumps and lite it the flame is much better for baking.

@@darrenpodraza8014 yes. This old frying pan oven works wonders. Still do it with said stove too. Outback oven WORK IN WIND due to the blanket/cozy. Mine is 25years old and pizza, focaccia and brownies are still tasty as today as then. Too bad though as I’ve not seen it in stores for years.

I started my backpacking journey with trail mix and ramen eventually moving on to mountain house. I've always been pretty lazy about feeding myself but I've realized that if I want to get people to come pack with me the best way to do this is to feed them good food! So I've started cooking actual food and I gotta admit, it's been nice. I'll definitely be looking into adding some baked goods on to my menu but I wonder what this oven can do that a deep pan with a lid couldn't. I'm no cook so it's a genuine question lol

Used one for many years backpacking. The oven is great. It sure is nice to have pizza, baked salmon, chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon rolls ect. I use an isobutane stove that’s the same style as your MSR and I have better temp control. Buy the lowest BTU stove it doesn’t take much.
    Happy trails

I love the idea of an oven in the backcountry. 2.5 lbs is a lot to carry. Then there are the fresh ingredients to carry as well. Flour, eggs, whatever pizza dough is made of, etc. Depending on the temperature, preserving the whole foods may be an issue. Maybe this would be great for winter trekking. Lessens the fire hazard, may make the oven controllable, and maybe your problem for the fresh foods would be keeping it from freezing. Sounds fun. I found this video cuz I want this to work.

    • @MyLifeOutdoors

2.5 pounds is a lot. I have had lots of good intentions with this oven, but almost always take it out of the pack at the last min to conserve weight.

I carry flour cause it's cheap dry and can make a sauce and bread and biscuits. If you carry peanut butter and Marmite it's really nice to make your own bread till both jars are empty. Plus you can travel ten days and in that morning still have fresh bread and peanut butter as long as it is self raising flour

    • @TopperPenquin

Or if your other food runs out it's a great backup to fuel your trip back into town

Just think of all the bread you can make with a 1 kg of flour. Think how cheap it is. Then try to buy the same food value in dehydrated foods. Very expensive. Plus flour is almost everywhere even fuel stations and once you use it and know it can be brought cheaply it is very light considering all the energy it brings

I think a classic Coleman camp oven is a better choice here. Maybe slightly bigger but I believe the weight is less and certainly packs up to a thinner package. I have been using one for more than 20 years (the same one for 20 years) albeit never tried backpacking with it, but it has been with me on several canoe trips and car camping, I love it.

U Need A remote feed alcohol fuel stove. The heat will climb slower. If it gets to hot let the stove die down open the top vent. It starts cooling to much feed fuel to the stove.
The key is somewhat babysitting it and a smaller stove burner.
That gas stove just pumps out way to many BTUs Even at its lowest

I have never used a true Alcohol stove. I once tried to use a alcohol gel pack and couldn't make water boil. So I have stayed away since. But that was also one of my very first backpacking trips.

@@ProdigiousReturndon’t know why my other comment isn’t showing. But unfortunately that’s the only one type that remote fuels he still makes.
He used to have a line up of 6-9 of different kinda. Low heat to high heat only to kinda adjustable ones. A bottles of different sizes with nipples for the hose to attach to ect ect ect.
But it’s possible if you reach out to him. An he still has aluminum bar stock and hose and some nipples a see if y’all could come up with a price. A let him know what you’re looking to do with it.
He may be willing to mill out one for you if one of the types he used to make an actually sell.
There used to be one other guy. But he don’t make any at all anymore. An I’m not sure of anyone else. It the one guy with the link.
If you UA-cam. Minibull Designs. You’ll cross many of them he has made an sold over the years.
Or if you have some tools. A the know how. You may be able to look at one of his ideas. A come up with something based off of one of his designs with more everyday tools.
I know he used to turn his on a lathe an did some things with them on a milling machine. But not everyone has access to them things as much as just regular tools drills an taps for threads an such things.

Coleman made a nicer version of these. It folds compact and it's not in bits and pieces like this. The older ones were made of steel, and the newer ones are made of aluminum. Haha the steel ones had a warning label reminding you not to use leaded gas!!
