you have to be generally an old hippy ( at least back then).. to know that triple drop tuning of Steve Stills....learned it from my older sisters boyfriend back in 1971, I was 14, and into all the west coast country rock sounds of the day....you can come up with all kind of original music in that great tuning made famous by Stills. Richie Havens has an outstanding original tuning as well, check it out. JT
Unique tuning, practical instruction and eminently rational playing. This came across wonderfully, I feel. Just another stellar sharing and performance from James James!
Played this song for decades in open G. Was passable but never sounded quite right. Just tuned my guild to this tuning. Holy Macanoly! There is the sound. Thanks.
Excellent lesson. Stephen Stills style tunings are always fun to mess around with and can really up the diversity of your sound with very simple technique.
I've always wondered how this was played. Now I can attempt it. On the "Stephen Stills" album with Stills seated next to a toy giraffe in the snow. It also contains "Sit yourself Down", another Latin-tinged acoustic gem. Reminiscent of the Manassas album. Thanks for doing.
Man, I love your lessons. I was a fan of your old channel too. Your song choices are spot on and they're songs that are famous for being tough to work out by ear. Your lesson of Stuck in the Middle was perfect. You don't do a lot of handholding and the lessons are fairly quick and right to the point. The only guitar lessons I watch on UA-cam really. If you setup a Patron I'd be your first donor. Keep it up.
Yup beyond awesome for me! Sounds like three guitars and a bass dulcimer droning away underneath it all. Stills was a creative genius with his own things happenin'. SO sad he went so very close to utterly ruining himself with coke. He deserved far better senior years for the immense pleasure he gave to others as a younger man, but he recklessly threw his health away. DON'T do that, people.
Dude you are the coolest cat on UA-cam and a most humble man too. What a service you provide my brother, thank you so much for helping this old man get better on the guitar. I've been playing the guitar since 1973 when I bought myself a Guild 12 string on my 18th B-day and being a stubborn Italian kid never took a lesson either (like you). Man I though 'I' knew a lot of songs...wow dude, you are truly amazing. If you ever make it down to Palm Beach County you better let me know so we can jam and you can sit in with me at my gigs.
The nights i went to bed listening to that song and other CSN tunes with my $39 stereo and headphones. A few of those songs were distorted by some blotter, not the cheap system. A great time for music and discovery.
@ jim Fitzgerald I don`t think many people are going to, or are too young to understand what you mean by "blotter". I do, of course, or I would not have texted you about it. Anyway, I know that many songs remind me of certain days that I dropped, and 90% of those memories are good ones. Unfortunately one day I ended up going to the E.R. because the purple ,double barrel dots were laced with a shitload of speed. I was very close to a heart attack. AArrrrgghhh! That SUCKED! I honestly would like to get my hands on some caps and stems, cuz I am 53, and do not trust anything but the natural. It has been about 25 years, since my last experience. "Or have you ever been experienced ? Well I have, not necessarily stoned, but..beautiful".
@@jamesjames9275 Speaking of slide. There's a UA-cam post from a few years ago, of a guy playing the Faces - "That's All You Need", from the - "A Nod Is As Good As A Wink" album. He totally nails it.
Man I love that acoustic! Great lesson JJ! Inspirational! I sold off all my acoustics in trade for 64 Gretsch Tennessean and 75 Tele Custom! No regrets, I love em but I may sell off 78 JMP and 70's Ampeg SVT for something more reasonable( already have 79 Deluxe Reverb) and get a Martin and Gibson! And call it lol! Then a super strat with Floyd Rose I'm sure and then..... never mind! It never ends does it?
Thank you for this!!! I always thought it was standard tuning but down one whole step. Now that I hear the low C I hear it better. Thanks again for all these songs you post!!!!!!
I learned how to play it like this years ago but couldn’t sing the octave. Still can’t, lol! Completely forgot the crazy genius tuning and how to do it. Thank you so much for your lesson. Amazing job! I might have to bring it out again at a show and just sing it an octave lower. My biggest concern is either taking the time in front of the audience to tune down and then back up (probably would tell the story of how Stephen created this and why) or just bring a second guitar already tuned for this one masterpiece. Thank you again!
James James why do you turn the comments off on some of your stuff ?....i actually enjoy everything you do / teach ...and without boasting...I can pretty much play all of this stuff ....but you have a way of presenting it that's so very organic , I guess you would say ...where I would just mumbled my way thru it ....so when can we order the James James Tee shirts ....?....cheers
As if the song didn't already have a ton of energy with those strumming Acoustics wouldn't that be three comes in it kicks it into well overdrive doesn't begin to describe it overdrive on steroids maybe is better
PT/JJ... man thank you so much for all these videos. I stumbled upon the PT channel back in august and have been learning so much ever since. It's been such a blast to learn some of these awesome tunes from someone who has such an appreciation for guitar and its infinite ability. This is one of my favorite ones to play, so simple and so much fun. I was curious if you have ever heard of Stills' bootleg album "Just Roll Tape - April 26th 1968" or the CSN "Demos" album. Both have awesome live recordings of Stills, and sometimes C&N, jamming these tunes out. Read up on how "Just Roll Tape" came about too. I implore you to take a listen to them if you haven't. Both are on Spotify. Cheers, man. Keep on rockin!
wow, thanks for unlocking this one, great job...(and as a bonus getting in and out of that tuning may justify buying another guitar you can just leave in it..)
I love the tutorial, tuning explanation but I still get confused on the strumming pattern and how many down ups in the middle parts and if there are 6 beats or exactly which two strings to mute.
Great stuff. Loved that! It really does sound like more than one guitar, very much like 'Carry on'. The chord shapes look the same too but I guess there are limited shapes available in such a unique tuning. E model was the tuning for 4+20, Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Carry on, although at the Big Sur in '69 I think Stephen tuned down to D for 4+20 (The one where the heckler guy gets in his face). So I assume this must be C model?
There are hundreds of guitar tutorials on here but I always come to you for the definitive method and style.
Killer freaking lesson James! Sure miss ya.
whose jaw also dropped when he started playing after the tuning lesson? great job and a big thank you!!
Right???
Alternate tunings are a truly magical world.
G.Scott Buchanibal, might you be Clan Buchannan? I'm Clan Innebriated!😂
My jaw dropped on the first four strings I tuned.
Fantastic lesson as usual James love learning new tunings this is a classic thanks
The positive energy from this song and delivery is electrifying.
Never seen a guitar tuned like that - I didn't know that's how they did it! Learn somethin' new every day - Sounds great!

Freaking freaking awesome... I had NO IDEA this song was tuned that way. Love it
Best tutorial for this song -- ever. (I thought I was ahead of the curve playing it in drop D tuning. This blows that away!)
It’s Stephens 71st birthday today and this pops up on my UA-cam! JJ works in mysterious ways.
he's about ten years older!!!
Just tuned my 12 string to that and it sounds amazing !
Unique tuning, practical instruction and eminently rational playing. This came across wonderfully, I feel.
Just another stellar sharing and performance from James James!
Well-struck comment and compliment.
Man, Stills was pure genius.
He is

HOT! Now I see why guys who play guitars get the girls! Woooo!
Thnx JJ this has now become my new Go To song .... playing it transports me into pure bliss
Excellent lesson. Stephen Stills style tunings are always fun to mess around with and can really up the diversity of your sound with very simple technique.
One of my ❤❤❤❤❤ faves!!!
Amazingly fun song to learn! On my radar!..Thanks.
Brilliant lesson.
You are the one to come to for CSNY! Thank you JJ!
I heard this played in standard tuning. It was close but no CIGAR !! This tuning is spot on !! Great Job !
Thank you very much for the lessons you impart. Most edifying and enjoyable.
My gf bought me this album for my 18th birthday and this was the killer track on it. Never knew it was this tuning.
How did Steve ever figure this out ? Amazing ! Then again how did you ever figure this out ? Amazing !
Steve got it from Bruce Palmer.
That was fun James, thanks! Love your selection.
that was one Hell of great strummin!!!! You got it perfect!!! Bravo!!!
Hello from Canada James! You are my go to guy for lessons now! Love your style! Your tastes in classic rock parallel mine. Thanx Bud … keep it going!
Another amazing tutorial. Keep them coming. Currently listening to Stephen Stills Manassas, Incredible album with some amazing songs.
Stills probably tuned that low to match the steel drums. One of those perfect choruses -- he was really kissed by the muse that day!
Thnx for being there James and doing what you do. Excellent as always.
I've always wondered how this was played. Now I can attempt it. On the "Stephen Stills" album with Stills seated next to a toy giraffe in the snow. It also contains "Sit yourself Down", another Latin-tinged acoustic gem. Reminiscent of the Manassas album. Thanks for doing.
man....that makes me happy...thank you...I was so very young when I heard it...
Thanks James another classic in a unusual tuning.
Such a full sound, just wonderful

The droning in this tuning is awesome!

Can always rely on you to teach it right. I learned Angie from you as well. Showed it so even I could get it. Thanks man. You are appreciated
Once again Mr James, we salute you!
I just found these CSN tutorials. They are amazing. Thanks so much for keep up the videos.

awesome ..my favorite acoustic band...thanks

Now you've got me going down that rabbit hole of using this as a blues tuning. Good lord where will it end?!
It would be interesting as a slide tuning.
@@jamesjames9275 Right? Or finger picking, like some Jimmy Page "Irish folk/blues" noodling.

Great job on the tuning it sounds so right, you have so much to offer, thanks
Nice presentation. Very quick and easy to understand and thanks for not putting us through the usual "finger by finger, fret by fret" routine.
Thank you! It will be great to play it in this tuning.
Not since Sonic Youth have I seen such crazy but awesome tuning. Love your vids and lessons.
your the best! much love. Thank you for the years and the lessons.
Great stuff all the meat of the songs without all the rambling your lessons have helped pull me out of a rut and it's been noticed Thank you

New tuning for me. I used the DADDAD tuning for Suite Judy Blue Eyes. So cool! Thanks!
A lot of people use that tuning for Stephen tunes, but he didn't. Still, use whatever works!
Thank you for this!!! I always thought it was standard tuning but down one whole step. Now that I hear the low C I hear it better. Thanks again for all these songs you post!!!!!!
Never heard of this tuning before. Thanks for sharing!
Both genius ! You and CSN ! What powerful strumming ! Thanks for the lesson always ! 👊

You just made my day!!! ✊👍✌👏👏👏🤠👋
Amazing - Thank You!
Very nice. So simple, but I never could figure it out. Thanks.
What a nice T-shirt, The Who by numbers album cover ! Besides, thanks for lesson, very clear and helpful 👍
Yep Great lesson and a great guitar you got ! Sounds amazing !!! Thanx

I've been listening to that stuff for years, it's outstanding.
Wow, for years the books always said it was Open C tuning. Seems like you got it right and they have been wrong!
Well it is an Open C tuning, just a modal one.
Ahhh, it is open C
@@tsfurlan It's not open C.
wow, thanks for unlocking this one, great job...(and as a bonus getting in and out of that tuning may justify buying another guitar you can just leave in it..)
I would never have worked this out in a month of Sundays.
Thanks.
Me neither lol
This is awesome! Thanks! Definitely took me a while to get the tuning right.
Great lesson for a great song!
Nice job man now I just need an amazing organ player....
Great tutorial for one of my favourite songs for decades. Strange tuning :-) Would you tell us the source of that great shirt you wear?
Just awesome!
Nice work J J💖💖👍👍
James happy 2020 good tutus I always thought this was on a 12 string seemed to be the way they did things in 70s
im totally blown away. thankyou!
That is great stuff. You really are a special player.
Amazing how you can figure any song out, and what the tuning is.
Beautiful guitar man. I play a Martin HD-28
excellent..very well done!!
Wow Thanks JJ (that's my nick name BTW) So much fun!
