I know everyone likes to bash LA these days, but one way where I don't think anyone can deny the city has improved is with pollution. My parents lived in Anaheim in the late '70s, and even on the best days you could barely see the Puente Hills about 10 miles away. On bad days, your eyes would sting. Nowadays you can see Mount Baldy on most clear days. I'd call that an improvement.

I live in Ohio Everytime I buy a lawnmower it's got a sticker on it say it illegal in the state of California. 1 and 2 gas cylinder engines I guess not allowed in Cali. I'm from San Jose and there would be smog alartes.

@@andyjay729 the whole topic of "regulation" is subjective. It depends who you ask. I myself am one who prefers little regulation. Cali is the most regulated state. Mostly bc i feel like regulation means higher prices. Maybe why gas in CA is so high.
When it comes to the "Banned in Cali" stickers like the guy said about the lawn mower. I don't think it is "bad" but I couldn't justify spending more money on a regulated lawn mower that produces less Smog.
But what do i know? I'm just one of those who's "living in the sticks" I guess lol

I moved from Cincinnati, Ohio to LA about 2 years ago. I will continue to say this. Los Angeles is probably the most misunderstood city in the country. I love LA and I really do feel like it’s an absolutely incredible city. It’s not perfect, but you’d be crazy to think any city is. I’m always hopeful it fixes its issues, because it is such a special place.

They're stuck up, pretentious, and rude (nearly run me over on the sidewalks). They think they're the coolest thing ever because they just arrived with their parents trust fund money which they use to gut out local businesses and open expensive boutiques which are only open 3 hours a day. 8:03 This is kind of a myth, the real reason why filmmakers moved to Los Angeles or at least stay in L.A. was because there was a variety of landscapes in the area, there are deserts, mountains, forests, and beaches in this one area. New Jersey on the other hand is not exactly known for its variety of landscapes. Maybe they came because of Thomas Edison, but they definitely stayed due to landscape variety.

I can say so much about places all around the county of Los Angeles, like the San Fernando Valley (my home), Santa Clarita, Palmdale... but when it comes to the main city, it would take well over a lifetime to explore it and really get an understanding of it. Yeah, I've been most places in L.A., but that's all surface level. I really am a tourist in my own city most of the time. So all these people from Texas and places that think they are better than California, or just Los Angeles, really don't know anything. It's a beautiful city full of wonderful things. Yes it has its problems, and they are almost too much to bare, but when I take a step back and say "I live in a place that millions people around the world consider 'The Top,'" it gives me a new love and appreciation for this place I call home.

I have to disagree about Santa Monica and Venice; if you get away from the touristy areas they are really nice; with many nooks and crannies to get lost in; the area is huge.

I ran away to LA when I was 14. I met some wonderful people under the bridge I slept under. I experienced trauma due to the man who groomed me and convinced me to go with him. But even walking down Hollywood Blvd at 3am in January of 1990, 14 and then alone, I genuinely felt safe. The homeless people were so caring and compassionate to me. Covenant House, in the end, bought me a plane ticket home after several weeks. But the lasting impression I got from Los Angeles, even all these years later, was of a place people went to escape pain, or to find happiness, a place that gave people hope. ✌️

I am planning on homelessness too, while hoping I don't but at least I know the weathers great and I am gearing up for the worst. I just know I can't stay in the red states. They're horrible in actuality for someone like me and the so called liberals often are not that friendly either in them. I targeted red states due to possibly the liberal crowds in small amounts would be welcoming, but its been the opposite. And I also risk homelessness in the midwest where I currently am stopped over too. I'd rather do it in L.A if I am going to pick. Thats where I am at with this right now and if I am not homeless eventually ,that would be super if I can actually get settled in L.A.

The entire atmosphere changes as soon as you drive down into LA county, it’s a little surreal. I can tell my parents don’t really feel it though, but I do. It’s sometimes hard to believe that a global powerhouse is only a few hours away from my quiet little community!

LA city gets a lot of crap because they expect it to be a certain type of city that they know. LA City has a multi decades long history of very high poverty and low income population that is tightly concentrated especially central LA, Eastside, South central, the valley center and valley east. Many educated, middle class and up moved to ritzy Westside or into dozens of middle class areas of the county like Torrance, Manhattan, Santa Clarita, Pasadena, etc. Property values remained low as prop 13 and low income residents spending power remained low. It is what it is.
Late 90s to today. There is a reversal in LA city. The low income, low education, high crime, poor schools is improving. People with more money and education are moving into LA city driving up home prices and rents. Downside is displacement of poorer people and uptick of homeless that can't afford. This is happening in many cities not just LA. Most of dramatic increases in last 13 years since the recession. Everything from rent to home prices were half of the cost today. It has gotten really bad in a short amount of time. Partially why huge homeless problems and why many fleeing LA for the Inland empire or Vegas, Phoenix, Texas. Too expensive.
The positive is now LA city has more money from property taxes, high consumer spending and economic activity to fix decades long issues. If you live in LA, the streets are repaved often, sidewalks repaired, trees trim, building more parks and playground, more trees planted, eco friendly planting. Cleanup. Even the homeless situations is being addressed with new shelters and housing with services like health, job placement, detox. Etc. But as rents rise problems with lack of affordable housing for those who have been in LA for decades with no affordable options In suburbs. LA city is able to attract tech workers, media tech like Netflix, lots of luxury hotels like Downtown, lots of new luxury apartments and condos. Keeps increasing its bank account with new sources and reinvests making better neighborhoods. For locals, places that were no go's in 80s and 90s are not so bad anymore. Some became very trendy.
In 20 years LA will Rival NYC.

All in all, a great childhood and nice neighborhood. Then in 1971, our house got broke into when we were on vacation and my parents decided to move us to Portland, OR. I used to be very much a New York City guy and worshipped it but really Los Angeles is my kind of place. I would never be bored living in LA. I live in South Florida which isn't exactly terrible, and two years ago we bought a two-bedroom two-bath penthouse condo overlooking a really nice canal with boats going by and every kind of bird and we're five minutes to a very lively and trendy downtown, and we bought it for a hundred and seventeen thousand. I know that would be impossible in Los Angeles. We're 20 minutes from Fort Lauderdale or Palm Beach south and north, but it just isn't Los Angeles.

Utilities, groceries, etc.. honestly about the same if not cheaper in some circumstances. I've been everywhere man, groceries prices are the same everywhere man. The traffic problem with L.A. is similarly overstated. EVERY city has bad traffic. The problem with L.A. is that it's so spread out geographically that public transportation is unfeasible. In New York or San Francisco, you can take a subway and get dropped off within walking distance of any destination. In L.A., you'd probably then have to find a second form of transportation.

Not a fan of LA. It just seems like a place without a soul. Great live music and food though. It (pre covid) is a cheap flight from the east coast of Australia where I am so been a few times.
Much prefer San Diego as a city. It just seems more authentic to me.

I grew up in South Central so watching this video just reminds me that a lot of other ppl in the city grew up with totally different experiences. For example, interracial families/relationships isn't as common in my neighborhood. Being Black we grew up alongside Hispanics but interracial relationships just weren't seen that often. I'm not saying it didn't or doesn't happen I'm just saying it's not something you see on the regular.

Nice Comment, @pamela. I think about leaving due to the "nuts" leadership we have, but I know leaving would be a one-way street; if I left, I could never afford to come back. That's why I'm VERY careful about actually going.

It is SAD what has happened to Los Angeles...nothing but tents on entire street sidewalks, graffiti, high crime. Also the weather is not as nice as Orange County or San Diego (LA is very hot unless you are in Santa Monica or Malibu, and 99% of the jobs are inland part of LA where it is hot, so hot that tar has melted at times!, you also have pollution, and traffic)
