I think what is also really sad is Marvin really only crosses the line when Whizzer says he doesn't love him.
I mean despite Marvin being an ass, when you break it down...his need for control stems from his need to be wanted. He wants people to love him, he wants to be wanted.
He lashes out the most when he realizes he can't force others to love or want him, even through cruel and selfish methods. So he just slowly spirals into his greatest fear that no one wants him or can love him. Even if that hate was created by his own actions.

also in In Trousers (which is canonical only if you can make any sense of it) there are many refrences to marvin's mother not loving him or neglecting him, which caused him to lash out for attention (maybe?? that musical makes no sense), which makes his story even sadder. it almost makes you feel bad for him. almost.
