Between Phil's talent at writing beautiful airs and Roseanne Cash's beautiful lyrics, this is an incredible song. There is a clip where Phil asks her how she came up with the lyrics. She had the idea of the secret life of roses in her head before, but the longing in the music brought the rest of the lyrics to mind for her. Those two should collaborate on some more.
The Secret Life of Roses: Music by Phil Cunningham, Lyrics by Rosanne Cash, Andrea Zonn - vocals & fiddle (more) Thank you; Andrea Zonn is one of my most favorite singer /musician of all time. This is absolutely beautiful. Thank you for the complete and detailed notes with all the wonderful musicians and (Roseanne Cash) listed songwriter. Had no idea! Hope they come to perform near us in Durham, NC area.
Oh, how beautiful. Yes, I agree this is a grower. I'm going to put it in my favourites. Tom, you post some wonderful stuff. Thank you so much for your contribution to UA-cam.
A grower and a spine-shiverer. Absolutely breathtaking. Andrea's beautiful voice, the Nashville talents there. It was all magical to me. Especially Lloyd Green and his steel. The man has the touch of pure gold.
Lloyd Green complimented every artist he's ever backed up, in a way like only he could. It's no wonder he is one of the most recorded steel guitarists in history, if not THE most recorded!
Great Video and great music. Classic scottish sounds and with the Lloyd green thrown in for good measure. Perfect use of the steel, but what else would you expect from LG?!
The song was written by Phil and Roseanne Cash for a BBC Scotland production where it was performed in different styles of American `Country` to show how the two nations are linked through music. This one is my favourite version.
As far as I know not released by anyone yet. I would think Andrea will have it on her next albulm. You would also expect Roseanne Cash to record it too - here's praying she makes a full recovery from her recent operation. I have added lyrics - just click "more" top right.
It took me hours to find this after hearing the tin whistle version(no vocals) on a Scottish wildlife documentary with no reference to the songs name. I've written other lyrics for it and will perform it.
fantastic song
It should win an award
at least we're still making relevant tunes
Thanks, Tom, for yet another new favorite artist. Your clips are the best reason of all to own a computer.
Scotland, the small white rose that smells sharp and sweet and will break the heart. Thanks for this.
Listen to this a couple of times - it is a real "grower".
An absolutely beautiful song, thanks for sharing it Tom
I've no idea why, but this song has me in tears every time I hear it...beautiful....

This video has haunted my mind , in a good way, since I first heard it about nine years ago , I just have to keep coming back to listen to it.
A big "Hi" to awnok and his friends on the Steel Guitar Forum. It's great to see those guys at RCA Studio B in action!

Phil, stop playing everything so well, you're getting too scary. (but keep it up 'cause I can't get enough) Time to take another breath.
