Dear Luke Martin,... I am watching your video with tears in my eyes,... my family are born in Indonesia on Java Island and grew up in Surabaja and Djakarta,... I have lots of cousins overthere. When I saw the people in your video and emotional feeling comes around me,... I have homesick feelings,... but I never travel in my lifetime to my roots because I am born in The Netherlands,... I hope very soon in my lifetime to travel where my family come from,... that's my wish. Thank you for sharing your precious moments in Azie,... I have enjoyed. Love Astrid, Wissenkerke Netherland

The salad is called "urap" if eaten with shaven coconut, or can called "pecel" if eaten with aromatic peanut sauce

For the Javanese, "dawet" is the name of drink while "cendol" only refers to the worm-like jellies. We Indonesians don't call palm sugar "gula melaka" that's what the Malaysians call it. It's "gula aren" or "gula jawa" for us. BTW, this is not my first time watching your video but I'm still amazed at how you guys are so game with trying everything. I'm Indonesian myself but to be honest the cuisine of Yogyakarta and Central Java is not my favorite as it is more on the sweet side. The Javanese also prefer simple, rustic herbs while where I'm from we're more liberal with our spices. But the Javanese there have got to be some of the friendliest, most gracious people on this planet that Yogyakarta remains a special place for most Indonesians like me. Thank you for taking me back to Yogyakarta! Terima kasih, or as they say it in Javanese, ꦩꦠꦸꦂꦤꦸꦮꦸꦤ꧀ (matur nuwun) 🙏

Sabrina's take on sambal explains pretty much why we Indonesians love our sambals. They just spice up our dishes and make us eat so much more haha! Sambal is especially the best company when we eat sweet food like tempe and tofu bacem you have here and petai or any other kind of lalapan (mere vegetables eaten raw, steamed or boiled as a side dish). All you eat in this episode are healthy and homey dishes. And the setting of Yogyakarta's green neighborhood is just beautiful! @Luke Martin Petai is found in almost all SEA countries. We Thai call it Setor. Best to be taken raw or half grilled with sambal or our Thai Nam phrik koong or of the sort. It is a great remedy for lowering blood pressure and a natural detox agent. Also, the banana you had was primitive. Therefore, it came with seeds. What we get from the supermarket are those genetically modified ones. I personally don't consume those in mass production. You are what you eat! Love your exploring villages in Indonesia. Keep it up!

Luke I must tell you, that some locals in your video speak using a specific javanese which is called “Bahasa Krama”. Yogyakarta has a very rich culture, and people there tend to protect and embrace their local wisdoms. That bahasa krama is only used in a specific situation such as when we speak to an elder person, honorable one and so on.

The Special Region of Yogyakarta is an autonomous and special region in the Republic of Indonesia, the only one in Indonesia that uses a monarchical kingdom system that still exists today, and the King has ruled Yogyakarta for generations.
Yogyakarta is an absolute monarchical kingdom within the Republic of Indonesia. Even if you have an appointment, you can meet the king and governor at the same time, he simultaneously holds two positions at the same time.
Usually the status of a governor is lower than the president, but the King of Yogyakarta is above the president of the Republic of Indonesia, highly respected. The president visits the king, not the king who visits the president.
I have lived in Yogyakarta for two months, but the food is mostly sweet, whereas I like spicy food.
I like cold weather, but in Yogyakarta it is very hot.
But the people of Yogyakarta are generally friendly, and the Javanese culture there is still good.
Yogyakarta is suitable for lovers of sweet food, simplicity, happiness, culture, history and, education.

Respect and social status, especially in the Kingdom of Yogyakarta.
Also social relations between the president of the republic of Indonesia and the king of Yogyakarta.
But in terms of the country in general, the president of the republic of Indonesia certainly has the highest status.
I know that when I lived in Yogyakarta for two months.
It's not surprising that various kings from all countries visited the King of Yogyakarta.

Exactly, my father is from Java and everytime I visited my grandparents, they served me those sweet foods, they were so happy when I visited them, and to show the great happiness they cooked many foods for me. While I actually love the spicy foods 😂. My mother is from Borneo, and every time I visited my grandparent from my mother side, they also did the same to me. Cooked plenty of salty foods. It was nice.
I was born in Sumatra and have been living here for 30 years. My taste of foods is the spicy one. Well, I’m lucky enough to have diverse family. Therefore, I have the chance to taste different foods and things. 🙃
