My mom and I made a paper mache mountain for my 3 year old nephew with wood glue and blue shop towels over a frame of chicken wire stapled to a thin sheet of plywood, and two PVC pipe scraps (they form two tunnels through the mountain). It was scaled for him to drive his toy cars on a ledge that spiraled up the outside, and of course through the tunnels. He also used it as a place for his plastic dinosaurs and other toys to roam. What are you trying to make? I have several hundred videos, and over 500 posts on my blog. Maybe there's already a tutorial that you can use. This lion mask will be available as a printable pattern like all the ones in the video behind me. The patterns are just cut out and taped together, so they work for beginners.
Hi Jonni. I am a paper mache artist and I have found that Elmer's clear glue is really nice to make your projects a little stiffer. It dries nice and hard. I use it alot.
I’ve used wood glue for hat sizing (felt), for thirty years, or more. It shows on the inside, and can drip on the table or floor, if you over saturate the felt, but it’s not nearly as toxic as the alternatives!
About spending a $ or two more. It's like spending an extra few $s on quality ingredients when cooking or crafting anything..... Sometimes a bargain brand will do (pays to prototype a project first).... but the quality ingredients makes for a better project. Jonni, I've seen enough of your stuff to consider you an expert in the field. Your recommendation of one ingredient over another carries the weight of master advising an apprentice. Thank you for sharing you knowledge with us.
I used air duct sealant on a recent prop I built that I think you should look into using. It dried hard and light as well as making it waterproof as it has rubber like properties
applying vaseline on your fingers might prevent the glue fromsticking to them. Idk.. Im gonna see if they have titebond here in India . Thanks for posting. Loved the lion mounted on the wall
I have always used a cement binder instead of Elmers glue for paper mache with no problems. I buy it in a hardware store and It is actually much cheaper than Elmers. I have even used it with your paper mache clay recipes. It is a bit thicker than Elmers and it is very strong.
I just looked up cement binder on Google, and it wasn't very helpful. Do you have a particular brand you recommend? I'd like to try it out, if we have any in our local stores.
@@UltimatePaperMacheJonni, I live in Trinidad, in the Caribbean. The product is called The Original Poly V7 Cement Binder, and it is made right here in Trinidad. It is used for repairs to concrete, and is mixed in with the mortar. Also used as a sealer to porous cement floors, where a solution of water and Poly V7 is applied as a primer. It looks just like white glue and it is water based, but unfortunately the label does not give the ingredients. I have used it in your recipe with the joint compound and it gets rock hard when it dries. I also found that a water/poly v7 solution helps to smooth the paper mache clay with my fingers. You can find the product here www.cpmltt.com/products/construction/poly_V7
Wow I’m glad I got a chance to see your video regardless to the type of glue…. I’m going to give its a try…but I also love the one you made too your homemade glue…thank you🙋♀️
We have been tasked by my 3.5 year old to make a Blue Marlin fish costume for Halloween, so we are turning to Papier Mache. Thank you for sharing your tips! They will come in useful.
I'm not quite sure what you mean. You can add as many layers as you want, and paper mache can be sanded. You might want to do it outside because you'll get a lot of dust.
We made a paper boat using TB3 and the newspaper and TB3 held up well. We left the boat outside one winter and the shell held up fine. This may be the solution for outdoor paper mache. The core of the boat was foam that gave it structural strength, but the shell was only Tightbond III based paper mache with three layer of newspaper. We did not paint it but a quality exterior paint would have been advised.
Johnny, I have been trying to make papier mache and trying to make crafts with it. I will tell you this. Where I come from, in Canada, we have paper grocery bags at our Sobeys stores. A lot of times, I bring the grocery bags home with me and when I empty them, I save them. A few months ago, I cut up a paper bag into small strips and stuck it into another bag (that wasn't paper). I am going to be using newspaper to cover the skeleton of the paper mache object, then I can put the strips of paper bag on them. The paper bag strips are stronger and easier to paint, because you don't have to continuously paint over ink that is on a newspaper.
I haven't used the paper bag paper for quite a while, only because our local store doesn't use them. But it is stronger, as you say. And even the lightweight brown paper from amazon.com boxes is easier to use than newspaper, because you can see the shapes better without all that printing. Let us know how your new sculptures turn out!
@@UltimatePaperMache okay, I wasn't sure if anyone else ever used strips of paper bag to do paper mache. My mother used to have a craft store and she got stuff on consignment. Some of it was brownish tan, so I assume it was made with paper bag strips

Hi Robert. You can find a video showing how I make my armature patterns here: ua-cam.com/video/ywViyxgbPUg/v-deo.html It expands on the info I provide in my book Make Animal Sculptures with Paper Mache Clay, available on amazon.com here: amzn.to/1nMUO3a
It depends on how well it's taken care of. You can find antique pieces that were made by the Victorians. If you keep them dry, and don't throw them around, they should last for a very long time.
I was wanting to make my own stencils to design phrases on t-shirts. So I bought a die cutting machine and die cut letters, but it won't cut through Notebook Divider sheets. I just used normal construction paper which is too thin for me to use as a stencil, but if this will work to stiffen the page so it doesn't go soggy when I'm painting a shirt... that would be so amazing!
Thanks. I do have fun making these videos. And yes, I'm doing well - I always work at home so nothing has really changed, so far. Take care and stay well. 😀
Came to this video to see what tou used for super strong bonding, I've used wood glue before, so no surprise there, Titebond will be something I will try in the future (as an Elmer's guy) but more importantly...YOU DO SUCH GREAT WORK! thanks for the video, and wear that or ANY of your creations ANYWHERE you like!
I have seriously considered wearing a different mask every time I go to our local store - folks around here need something to talk about! I probably won't, though. 😀
I'm glad you like the video. I used the paper that comes stuffed in amazon.com boxes. It's almost the same weight as newspaper, so don't go out of your way to find some unless you need the color to show in your final project. Newspaper works just the same, but it doesn't look as nice in a video. :)
I want to cover a 36” beach ball in paper mache to make a globe. Would you have any recommendations to increase the rigidity of the paper mache while I do this? Thanks.
Jonathon, I always recommend using a layer of plaster cloth over any air-filled shape, like a beach ball or balloon. This gives you a rigid base to work on, and prevents any cracking or wrinkling that can happen if the ball or balloon changes its shape while the paper mache is drying. Paper mache over plaster cloth creates a very strong shape.
I don't know - I haven't tried making the paper mache clay with wood glue. But it dries hard as a rock, when you use the original recipe. If your puppet heads hit the table really hard, and often, they could crack, though.
Love your videos. Learning so much. Ordered one of your books. Can’t wait to receive. Also google translate is awesome. Just copy paste and you’ll receive translation to help reply to more friends.
I didn't buy the paper. It's the brown paper that comes as stuffing in amazon.com boxes. It's only slightly heavier than newspaper, and newspaper would work just as well. The brown paper looks better on a video, though. 😊
Nice work. I’m building a type of hotrod called a "belly tank lakester" out of the drop fuel tank from a fighter aircraft. Since I only have one chance of getting things right with the very rare and expensive vintage aircraft tank, I’m going to form a paper mache copy from the original so I can use that for all my mock up work. Your instructions were very clear and concise.
Thank you for this tutorial! Happy I found your channel… subscribed now! I have a fun light sculpture project I want to try. Love the sturdiness of the wood glue. Brilliant. Thank you again!! 🎉
Genuine question: Could it be better to do more than one layer and then sanding everything down searching for a lighter product? And I know it might sound like a waste of materials time, but here are my thoughts: When applying a 2nd or 3rd layer, the inner ones are also getting wet once again and absorbing even more glue over time (but much less will evaporate now since there is stuff over top), giving not only a thicker mask at the end with more room for adjustments (like for crevices if needed), but when you sand the excessive materials down to the right amount, the original shape, now exposed once again, is harder given it went more than one wet/dry cycle and received more glue that couldn't evaporate over time. Is it too far off?
That all sounds very reasonable to me. You'd be creating plywood, essentially, so you'd be able to shape and sand it as much as you want. Do remember to wear a mask, though, so you don't get all the glue and paper fibers in your lungs. If you try it, I hope you'll let us know how it turns out.
Do you think this could be used over balloons? I’m being a storm cloud for Halloween ☁️ so my hat will have lots of balloons with paper mache over them so they’ll last & then covered in some fluff.
What an interesting idea! I think the wood glue would work better with the balloons than regular paper mache paste. I have problems with the paper mache getting wrinkled over balloons because they keep changing their size and shape while the paste is drying, but the glue dries fast enough so that probably won't be a problem. And if the clouds are covered with fluff, it probably won't matter if they wrinkle a bit. Go ahead and try it. 😊
Beautiful. Is there a way to make this weather proof? I am making Dia De Los Muertos skeletons. I will be using large 6 ft skeletons as a "frame". I'm looking for something light weight, quick dry, and paintable.
There's a guest post on my site about waterproofing paper mache, and the author recommends using Rustoleum Leak Seal. She lives in Florida, so her outdoor art is rained on a lot, and she says it works really well. I haven't tried it myself for long-term outdoor weatherproofing, but if your skeletons will only be outside for a few weeks, it should work OK. If they soften at all in the rain, you can bring them back inside to dry out. You can see Linda's guest post here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/make-a-waterproof-paper-mache-mushroom

I'm trying to make a paper mache headliner for an antique truck. I am putting the paper mache over the outside of the truck cab as a mold . overnight I put a fan on low blowing on it and this morning it was warped edges curled up etc. Was that because of the fan? I am using fairly large sheets of newspaper for the more flat spots. I am doing it in a garage and it does get pretty cool right now at night. I have saran wrap taped to the top of the steel cab roof to keep it from sticking. Would the clay mix recipe work better? I am going to seal it and glue vinyl fabric to it after it is dry.
Large flat pieces of paper mache will tend to warp, and that includes the paper mache clay recipe. I think the reason is that the top dries first, and it starts to shrink when the water evaporates, which makes it curl up. One thing you might try is to use a layer of plaster cloth first, then a layer of paper mache. The plaster cloth will get stiff right away. If the paper mache and plaster cloth dry together, and if they're elevated off the metal roof so air can circulate on both sides, it might not warp. But I haven't actually tried doing anything like this, so it's just something that might be worth trying.
@@UltimatePaperMache I probably made that worse by having the fan blowing over it. I tried the glue recipe and that woked better but I am still trying a few different ways of doing it. The weather is getting to cold now to do much. Thanks for the reply

Hi there. Lovely work! Just for more info: Titebond III is a waterproof wood glue. In thin layers, it dries in one hour and it takes eight hours to cure and reach its full strength. The only problem is that it doesn’t sand very well and will limit the paints you can use (because it’s waterproof).
Thanks for the tips. I've been using spray primer on my Lion King masks under the acrylic paint, and I haven't had any problem with the paint yet. Do you know what kinds of paint won't work with the wood glue?
Ultimate Paper Mache Oh, you won’t, if you’re using primer! :) Titebond III cures sort of like plastic, so you just need a light sanding and a primer and you’ll be alright. Also, loving the channel. :)
Because the paper mache clay is heavier than one layer of paper and glue. They'll be worn by kids, so keeping the weight down is important. You could add some details with paper mache clay, if you have time, but when on stage the details will be hard to see from the audience. But you could use the clay if you wanted to.
Hello Joni, I really like watching your videos! But I have a question. Where do you get (buy) paper patterns for masks. I wanted to try to make a lion mask, but I can not find such paper templates anywhere.
Hi Maksim. I create my own mask patterns, and sell them on my website. You can find there here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/patterns I don't know of anyone else who makes the same type of pattern, although you might look for "papercraft lion pattern."
I've tried adding glue to the traditional paper mache paste made with flour and water, and it actually felt less sticky. And for paste, that's not a good thing - but it might have been my imagination. I wonder if you could use one of the acrylic mediums that aren't clear. I've used some of the clear gell as paste when I add colored tissue paper to a paper mache sculpture and it worked really well. The white versions might work, too.

I like the brown paper that comes in amazon.com boxes, but only because it isn't printed. It's really the same as newspaper. Will you have anything under the paper mache, like cereal box cardboard? If it's by itself, you'll need three or four layers to make it strong enough.
Question here. Hello, I just stumbled upon this looking for some paper mache instruction. Thank you so much. I have a question. I have a hat that is made of some sort of extruded paper weave. I would like to use a glue that is strong, and would make it relatively waterproof. My concern is the smell after the glue dries. I'm very smell sensitive, and I also don't want something that would leach any chemical residue into my scalp. Would you let me know if this would work for that? Or perhaps you have a suggestion for a better product? Thanks again.

I have searched most of the comments (not all) and the info, but can't see what brown paper you are using? Is it literally just brown paper you can buy in a roll? it looks a tad thicker than that? I just would like to try with something other than newspaper :/
I'm just using the brown paper that comes in amazon.com packages. It's slightly heavier than newspaper, but not much. I think the Kraft paper you get on a roll is a lot heavier, but if you tear the strips thin enough it should work, too.
Theoretically, it should be as strong as an equal thickness of plywood. However, you'd need to experiment to see if it's really strong enough, and to see what kind of sound it makes. It would be fun to find out. 😀

Hello 👋 how are you doing today? I hope 🤞 this year brings happiness, peace and love all over the world 🌎 I’m originally from Canada 🇨🇦 grow up in Fort Worth Texas, currently living in Key West Florida. Where are you from if i may ask?
Could you make a step by step tutorial for beginners? Thanks 😊
Great tip, Hazel. Thanks! 😺
You are very creative it's been a while now I am watching your tutorial thanks for sharing tips and tricks you are a real artist
I’ve used wood glue for hat sizing (felt), for thirty years, or more. It shows on the inside, and can drip on the table or floor, if you over saturate the felt, but it’s not nearly as toxic as the alternatives!
I LOVE your creations!
Thanks!
Thanks, Joseph.
I used air duct sealant on a recent prop I built that I think you should look into using. It dried hard and light as well as making it waterproof as it has rubber like properties
Thanks, Eric. Is there a particular brand? And where do you buy air duct sealant?
applying vaseline on your fingers might prevent the glue fromsticking to them. Idk.. Im gonna see if they have titebond here in India . Thanks for posting. Loved the lion mounted on the wall
Thanks! And if you'd like to make that lion, it's made with a printable pattern. You can find it here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/lion-mask
You're adorable and such a good teacher. Thank you. My daughter and I loved watching and taking inspiration ☺️
Thanks, Melinda. 😊
Extremely talented.
Thank you for your wonderful videos.
I’m going to give its a try…but I also love the one you made too your homemade glue…thank you🙋♀️
Do you think you can use joint compound over this method to smooth it out?
We have been tasked by my 3.5 year old to make a Blue Marlin fish costume for Halloween, so we are turning to Papier Mache. Thank you for sharing your tips! They will come in useful.
Wow, im already making crow mask in fursuit like style
this is so helpful and also gives me ASMR
Is it possible to build up a mold to make it 1/8 thick and then sand it smooth?
I'm not quite sure what you mean. You can add as many layers as you want, and paper mache can be sanded. You might want to do it outside because you'll get a lot of dust.
91% rubbing alcohol can cut the acrylic binder in titebond III. Cover with alcohol then plastic until soft enough to remove. It can take days.
What is the lovely brown paper you are using?
Very useful!! Im about to make a cover for a sketchbook with this technique
I am really enjoying your videos. I would love to see a tutorial on pattern making in general. Your skills in that area seem unmatched. Thank you for all the valuable tips
Hi Robert. You can find a video showing how I make my armature patterns here: ua-cam.com/video/ywViyxgbPUg/v-deo.html
It expands on the info I provide in my book Make Animal Sculptures with Paper Mache Clay, available on amazon.com here: amzn.to/1nMUO3a
What is the longevity of an item made of papermache?
It depends on how well it's taken care of. You can find antique pieces that were made by the Victorians. If you keep them dry, and don't throw them around, they should last for a very long time.
I was wanting to make my own stencils to design phrases on t-shirts. So I bought a die cutting machine and die cut letters, but it won't cut through Notebook Divider sheets. I just used normal construction paper which is too thin for me to use as a stencil, but if this will work to stiffen the page so it doesn't go soggy when I'm painting a shirt... that would be so amazing!
That's an interesting idea - let us know if it works. 😊
Muito lindo seu trabalho. Me inspiro muito e já aprendi bastante coisa aqui com você. Grande abraço!
is this good for christmas tree ornaments as well?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! You speak really well to the camera :) I hope you're doing well, with everything that's going on.
Thanks. I do have fun making these videos. And yes, I'm doing well - I always work at home so nothing has really changed, so far. Take care and stay well. 😀
You are the ultimate! Love from Niagara, Ontario! Xxx
Thank you so much for this! What is the brown paper that you are using in this video?
Can wood glue be swapped for regular glue in a paper clay recipe? I’m making Punch and Judy puppets and need them to withstand slapstick.
I don't know - I haven't tried making the paper mache clay with wood glue. But it dries hard as a rock, when you use the original recipe. If your puppet heads hit the table really hard, and often, they could crack, though.
Wow this is really great!!!!!!Super happy this is exactly what i needed, thank you so much!!!!
Love your videos. Learning so much. Ordered one of your books. Can’t wait to receive. Also google translate is awesome. Just copy paste and you’ll receive translation to help reply to more friends.
Love this💕 what kind of paper did you use? Where to buy?
Thanks
What a challenging project! Let us know how it turns out. 😊
@@UltimatePaperMache Thanks for the feedback :D Happy I made sense hahahaha
@UltimatePaperMache thank you so much for your reply. I just discovered your channel, and I love it.
What was it that you didn't like about the Elmer's wood glue?
I can't remember. I think it had something to do with the way it felt, but try it yourself. You might like it.
Brilliant! I’m so excited that you’re selling patterns for the base shapes for mache! Your work is AMAZING!
Thanks, Katie. By the way, that dragon finger puppet on your channel is amazing! Have you made any more?

Where can I follow the instructions to make baby head elephant??? It’s increíble
Thanks! You can find the pattern and videos here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/baby-elephant
Wonderful❣️👍Love the practicality of it, as well as the artistry.
does it needs to get the paper soak the glue inside to make it more stronger? those looks very realistic very detailed
You just need enough glue to hold the pieces together. 😊
I love all your paper mache tutorials. I have a paper mache item that I want to make a reusable mold so I can duplicate more paper mache copies. What would I put on the original item to make my mold
I use silicone molds to make paper mache copies, and I have a video showing how to do it. You can find it here: ua-cam.com/video/zevmy70b4oo/v-deo.html

what is the paper? is it just plain brown bag paper? luv your vids!
Wonderful as always Jonni, just a recommendation maybe try using Japanese rice paper some. it’s super strong, light and durable for stage work. Also you can back light rice paper for really interesting luminous masks or sculptures
I like that idea, Douglas. Thanks for the tip!
Looking for a way to make a paper packing tape sewing dress form strong...could you paint this glue on over the top do you think? Once it is off the model.
I don't know if that would help or not. Could you add another layer, maybe with the brown packing paper like I used for the lion? That might work better.
@@UltimatePaperMache Thank you. Yes, could add another layer or even just plain paper (which I assumed you used). How much glue did your mask take?
@@maryb.c.507 That's hard to say, because I used the large container. But at least 4 oz. The small bottles are way more expensive (per oz) than the big ones.

I haven't used it, but I know it's a traditional choice. I think it may be good in areas where mold is a big problem.

what in your opinion would be a good release agent when papier macheing on top of fibre glass or any kind of pourous material?
thank you
If you want to get the paper mache off when it dries, you can use petroleum jelly, or you can lay plastic wrap over the form.
If making what looks like hair on this wood glue method what paper or material works the best to attach it to the mask?
I know some people have used the pattern with fake fur, but I don't think anyone has told us what glue they use.
God bless you; you are such a talented lady!
😊
@@thiagoamaral5912 Thanks, Thiago! :)
Hey Jonni💕 why dont you use papiermache clay for those masks?
I wonder if adding flour and salt to it will make it stronger and thicker? Trying to find a strong, thick, opaque but also fast drying recipe.
I really admire your hand work 😯
Thank you so much 😀

My son asked to be a dalek for a comicon convention and I was considering paper mache to try do it.
Yes, paper mache would work for that. You might need to reinforce it with a cardboard armature to make it stronger.
Thankyou for sharing they're beautiful
What paper do tou recommend or use to do strong costume layer? Im gonna try this tomorrow to make my sons audrey 2 from little shop of horrors.
Sorry - I'm really not an expert when it comes to glue. The clerk at your local DIY store might be able to help.
Incredible work, I love it. Thank you for sharing. Cheers!

Hi Johnny, you truly are the best!!
Tfs ♥️♥️
Love your videos! Is there something I can put on top the paper mache to make it waterproof. Making my son a mask for Halloween and it is suppose to rain.
Any suggestions?
You could use a waterproof spray varnish.
Wonder if this would be strong enough for a guitar lr lute body, minus the neck
Theoretically, it should be as strong as an equal thickness of plywood. However, you'd need to experiment to see if it's really strong enough, and to see what kind of sound it makes. It would be fun to find out. 😀
Thank you so much!
I wonder if I can successfully try a different texture using the same technique
Maybe - let us know how it turns out.
Great technique I'm going to use this on my pumpkin monster for Halloween
Great idea! Will you post it online so we can see how it comes out?
