    As a Unity developer, I excel in most aspects of game development, but I find myself challenged when it comes to creating captivating environments. Typically, I begin by crafting intricate character models and implementing systems tailored to them. However, when it comes time to place these impressive models within a world, I often struggle to achieve the epic atmosphere I envision. Your videos do inspire me to do better and keep up the hard work my friend!

    I love this game so much I had to see how it was made!! You make it look so simple (I am certain it is not)- It looks so real that I think I could take a stroll through the town. Really is amazing to see how it all comes together! If you have not played the game- play it. One of the best games ever made by a mile and absolutely one of its kind.

    Really impressed with your world building. I love the environment, and the time lapse was seriously interesting - your voice-over was perfect, and I loved the little bit of humour. Good luck with your project, and I look forward to seeing every video you release on the way through.

    I don't know why, but I'm probably interested in about 1 video game release a year, maybe less. I don't know if it's just the way games are made now, or if I'm just burnt out on games - nothing really seems that appealing anymore. I just can't seem to find myself that interested in the games people like nowadays.
    Your game simply seems to be approaching things...differently? Right now it looks like something I'd love to play in the future, hope to see more progress soon!

    This is single highhandedly the greatest work in progress for a game's open world I've ever seen. Especially if it's just by yourself. So much detail is put onto the smallest of things. It really show how much you care about your work. You're an inspiration. Will this be available to the public any time soon?

    Hi Danny, I really like the video (and all the videos you have on this channel). This video introduced me to follow active quads which has already been so useful to me in the past few days. Thank you! Do you have any other youtube channels that aren't specifically related to Eastshade where you do other stuff like this? At the beginning of the video you mentioned it being a lot of work to make a full tutorial which seemed to imply you have done that before, I'd really like to see them if you have.
    Additionally, Eastshade looks wonderful.
    I've been working on my own game using Unity and Blender that is also supposed to be heavily an exploration game. Even though I'm only ~ 10 months into development (part of which was mostly conceptualizing and experimenting and scrapping different failed experiments) and I seem to have a lot less experience than you, I'm very determined to actualize as much of what's in my head as I can, so it's really cool to see someone else who may like to work in a similar fashion doing something similar. I like that Eastshade does not rely on combat to keep players interested. That's a really significant thing I'm trying to do in my game (the gameplay is to be horticultural - where players can influence the ecosystems around them - and narrative based).
    Anyway... I would be really interested to talk to you more about your processes and experience if that would be something you'd be interested in.

    Those pizza slices, tho! Great glimpse at your workflow. I can relate to your style for when I'm building animation sets and making new characters or backgrounds and I know that feeling when it feels like cheating but you learn to respect that as a universally used method in any field.

    Awesome modelling job! Its great to see artists create low poly models instead of the usual high-poly to low-poly and all the baking mess...
    I love the detail you went into with your narration. Your techniques look fun and very productive.
    I've used some techniques like your "instances" in SketchUp, but not in Blender. I found Blender much more difficult to use. Your video inspires me to give Blender a try again.
    Do you have any pointers on how I could learn some of your techniques, specially with low poly designs? Maybe a site with tips on low poly modelling in Blender?

    • @orchs
      @orchs 8 років тому

      +Gamers On Linux Its not blender specific but Futurepoly is a school (and youtube channel) that puts out great tutorials for making 3d game art. As far as learning blender specifically I think Blender Cookie's stuff is great.

    I'm really impressed by what you already achieved. Your game is really interesting and you sold me with your environment :p
    Keep the good work !
    I have a question if you don't mind.
    I assume you don't use World Machine since he isn't mention in your blog post about your tools, did you have any advice when building a world by hand and give a natural look ?
    (I actually work on my vegetation skills and want to put it for a gameplay perspective, not only for a beauty shot.)

    • @eastshadestudios8335
      @eastshadestudios8335  9 років тому +1

      NixxusNibelheim I actually did use world machine when I was first making the terrain. It
      can give a good base to get started from, but I've found unless its a flight sim or something its still up to human-level stuff like vegetation, rocks, etc. to sell the look of a natural place. There are a lot of things I keep in mind when filling out the areas, but unfortunately I don't have a particular golden piece of advice. Things like density, clustering, negative space, rock formations and canopy silhouette matter a lot to me. A totally random tip: I use a lot of dead trees with no leaves because I noticed canopies fill out long before I've reached my desired trunk density.

    As an aspiring game developer, this is amazing! I was wondering, did you do this game by yourself? I will probably find out in the course of watching the videos, but I wanted to ask anyway 😅 I’m interested because I’m trying to find out whether I could do a game by myself one day or not (I’m horrible with people).

  • @jaymkultra

    this looks amazing! I have a question, I see you are unwrapping on the go and using an image as a texture but do you use any normal/spec maps or anything as well? Ill need to try the unwrap workflow and just throw images on my models as I tend to wait till the end then use a texturing application like quixel suite. keep up the good work!

    • @eastshadestudios8335
      @eastshadestudios8335  7 років тому

      Thank you! Yes I use normals and spec. There are multiple maps for every texture, but when unwrapping, I only need to see the diffuse in the UV window to know where I'm putting the UVs. The other maps are already hooked up to the material in Unity.

    Looks awesome. Can you explain how you cut shapes out of a wall, like a door? :)

    • @eastshadestudios8335
      @eastshadestudios8335  9 років тому +1

      Craig Snedeker I usually just use the knife tool and cut it. If you keep the wall a flat plane you can use the "Solidify" modifier to give the wall thickness. In the case of this door I had to use a boolean subtraction because cutting it was too difficult with how complicated the curvature of the wall was. I recommend avoiding booleans if you can but they can deliver some really difficult shapes sometimes.

    When you're painting in black, is that an AO paint on a secondary uv channel or something? I'd also love to learn more about your script and what it does.

    Hi Eastshade. Would like to ask:
    When you exported your model into Unity, how do you let the buildings and surrounding props have such good lighting already? Is it due to the materials, or the work of a shader? Usually for my projects, the environment would only have such quality lighting when every prop is done. Thanks for any advice.
    PS. I watched the trailer and the game looks awesome! I really look forward to playing it! :)

    • @eastshadestudios8335
      @eastshadestudios8335  7 років тому +2

      Hey thanks for checking it out! I'm working in a game world that already has the lighting model and shaders figured out, and the lighting for my world is global, so I don't need to set up new lighting every time I make a new area. I generally think its good practice to lay in lighting early on, because it informs decisions on layout and composition.

    How long did it take you to make this building? And i noticed you have a synced diffuse to normal map setup, did you set that up with unity or is there a plugin that automates normal maps based off diffuse?

    • @eastshadestudios8335
      @eastshadestudios8335  8 років тому

      +Bryan Crisos I think it took a 3-4 work days by the end of it. Not sure exactly what you mean by synced normal map and diffuse, but I generally start with a bake, and then add details from the photo diffuse using a program called CrazyBump.

    • @Mrminico92
      @Mrminico92 8 років тому

      +Eastshade Studios Oh i see, The video is going so fast that it looks like you're only dropping diffuse files and its generating a normal map outta of it.

    Hi! Just wanna ask:
    So you've worked on AAA games before, right? I bet they didn't use Blender, but Maya or something like that. Why do you prefer Blender? Just curious :)

    • @eastshadestudios8335
      @eastshadestudios8335  7 років тому

      Yeah, Maya and 3ds max are the industry standards in games. Blender is my favorite modeler for many reasons. Especially for its UV tools and how it handles instancing. Its certainly the least bloated 3d software as well. The fact that its free is a huge bonus, but I use it because I prefer working with it, not because I'm unwilling to pay for more expensive software.
