Every longhunter was different, but I thought I would put together an example longhunter outfit to help people get started. Our Website - www.townsends.us/ Items In This Video - bit.ly/1blGh7H
I came accross this channel fairly recently and I immediately loved it. So now I'm binge watching this channel from the start whenever I can. Great work!
During a rainy event I learned that the weave on my canvas hunting shirt was tight enough that I didn't have to hide from the rain. I wouldn't say it was waterproof as water did eventually come through the cape and shirt, but not enough to soak through the blanket shirt I had on underneath. I remained warm and dry for the weekend. Great products!
@LivingHistorySchool I would suggest sending one of your buckets back so we can see your problem. Wood buckets and barrels that are used frequently can be difficult to keep in good shape as the constant soaking and drying causes them to expand and contract, breaking them apart.
Brilliant longhunter attire! Enjoyed hearing the different pieces that comprised the finished work. Also, I thought it was delightful how the longhunter solemnly stared, as if perplexed by a cheery soldier marching up to him in the wilds and explaining his attire one bit at a time.
Buck skins were the ultra woods attire, durability second to none. Jerkins made from leather, usually deer or elk. Boot length moose hide or elk moccasins to protect legs and feet made quiet foot ware. Canvas and cloth soon wore or rotted to shreds.
I’m Scottish and I love these videos and I tend to think of all of the highlanders who had to journey to the new world because of the clearances I wonder how they would have felt being cast out of their homes and finding themselves in this strange new world with strange new creatures and different climates they were used to
That's so cool, as an American I often wonder the opposite; what kind of culture did my ancestors come from when they moved here? What must it have been like to be a part of Scottish culture then and to come across the pond and have to leave it all behind? These are the people who built this nation.
I have an affinity for blackpowder. Long hunters were men who went on long hunts, hence the name. Can you make a video on the history of the early longhunter? Thanks
I have a hunters coat I got from Koh koh mah I wear it all the time, not that I'm a re enactor but I just like it. It has become a thing on my YT channel, if I don't have it on I'm asked where it is. I also have a blue sash, which I got at Mississinawa 1812
Jon...I know this is a little old, but how about "dressing a longhunter for winter" ...I'm in need of information for a possible winter trek but I'm having a little trouble, especially the foot wear. Thanks, keep'em comin'...
I have noticed that I can find fuzzy fake fur boots or solid hiking boots not usually both. I'd go the regular leather boots the hunter is wearing, but maybe an half inch too loose, carry two sets of linen strips which are close to self wicking fabric nowadays to wrap my feet everyday and swap them out, then stockings of some type, then dry treat thin pieces of grass to trap heat between my stockinged foot and the slightly loose leather. I would decide if I was going to use modern water proofing chemical treatments on my boots, or find an oil or sap treatment from the time period to do it.
It also depends what you fill the buckets with. I could think of a few things that would make the bucket full apart...such a chemicals and such. I know this is old comment however, buckets have to be cared for like with everything else in the 18th century. Todays Americans buy something and expect to take care of itself...thanks plastic.
It took a whole 44 seconds to mention nutmeg. 13 years later, and it's still going strong!
funny that we both watched this video and realised nutmeg within 16 hours :D

After seeing you 7 years later, it's amazing to see a bit of your beginnings.
your comment is now 7 years old lol
"in nutmeg color"
Sabastian Anugraha He cooks a lot. Funny though.
Yes, they did wear the hats flat as the hat blank comes. As for tricorn - ahhh fashion, who can explain it. - Thanks for watching!

The longhunter's dead stare hahahaha

The way the hunter is staring at him while he speaks is rather disturbing. 😱
Agreed! He's hunting I reckon ... :-D
It's the cold, callous, dead-eyed stare of someone who has hunted man...😮
@@David_Rafuse lol yeah something like that 😕
Que the Banjos 😘
If some dandy popped up from behind a tree, and started pawing your stuff, you’d give him the stink-eye too...

I just came here curious about where Townsends started. It was already well done, but it's interesting to see how far these have come.
Just remember"nutmeg color" that covers just about everything.
Love nutmeg.

Lmfaoo, nutmeg man for life
I would question that overshirt being worn during the long hunter period. But...your stuff always looks great 👍
I have an affinity for blackpowder. Long hunters were men who went on long hunts, hence the name. Can you make a video on the history of the early longhunter? Thanks
Your outfit has some seriously nice stuff. Not to mention the videos!
Your products are the best thank you
haha the model is doing very well for being picked apart so well 😃
could this video be the earliest mention of nutmeg on the channel?
Cool video. That will really help beginners.
Very cool! Thank you.
@jastownsendandson
its the cheap metal banding that breaks, I keep the buckets soaked most of the time
Great video!
Where it all started. Surprised there aren't that many comments
You should make a video of how to start the re enactment journey. There's a lot to learn and covering the basics would help a lot!
We have made a getting started series in the past ua-cam.com/video/Cmiv0kFUMG4/v-deo.html
Ah, nutmeg. A favorite spice and a popular color.
@Townsends Whoops, you misspelled your title! Longhunter, not longunter.
Omg so creepy best vid ever townsends

I have always maintained that the best way to age garb is sweat and dirt.
The bag he is carrying as also called a “Possibles” bag ...referring to anything that you could possibly need!

I have like all of those hats lol

Did people actually wear hat blanks back then? If so that amuses since it's seems more practical to wear the hat blank then a tricorn.
The knife was made by Paul Dubro at Legacy Forge. legacyforge.net
Update: I asked Paul and he says it was probably one of his apprentices.
Shouldn't the sash be fingerwoven?
He's looking at you like you made your son do this
Is no one gonna mention how buddy is staring at him. Like it looks like he wants to kill him lol.
does anyone have any patterns or tutorials for making something like this?
what has he got around his neck? crevat? or??
However, keep in mind, when you wear a tri-corn you don't have to worry about burning your hat.
Coffee stains are mandatory, lol.
who watch this in 2018
t-t
What is a “Longunter”?
It's longhunter i think. just misspelled in the title. Longhunters went on long hunts, not a hunt you'd be back the same day or two.
did your website change from years ago?
Rosrychaplet www.townsends.us/
very nice, can I get them in camo? just joking
you guys sell nice clothes, but your wooden buckets fall apart, the bands break
