I used to be able to start it in gear with the newer model starter motor. Not sure this will solve all of your problems though if you have a really "draggy" clutch.
I'm really not sure mate. The part numbers would be different, but not sure that they display the part number or not... Maybe call your local dealer and ask if your year model has it or not.
Another fine video Mr. Watson! That's a shame the KTM didn't design a reliable starter system on the 2 stks. I've heard a lot about it on YT. At least they've upgraded the starter motor. I think on the one hand we should be glad they're developing 2 stks, and back in '08 that was very true. No other 2 stks had the "electric leg", so to speak. But now there are other mfr's with electric start 2 stks, and at least I know the Beta's have rock solid starters. I do have to say that the KTM 4 stk starters are very reliable and require zero maintenance. Anyhow sir, thanks for the upload!
gncc1race Thanks mate. Yeah, it was more of an afterthought and they are sold as a "hot start only", so they aren't designed to be starting the bike thousands and thousands of times, especially when cold.
I changed starte with 410w version but it doesn't start when the bike is cold. It works only when bike is at good temperature. Do you think they sold me a 350 w instead of a 410w?
I have the same problem on my 525 Y ktm don't build are 4 brushes starter Instead 2 My son little 200 Suzuki used 4 brushes on the starter This update you're using has 4 brushes or they still using 2 ?
Hi thank you for your video! I have ktm excf 250 year 2008 and my starter is bad, no powerfull.. Do you know where can i find better part than the origine? Sorry for my english(i am french) thank you !😉
Hey mate. As far as I am aware, the starter motors for the 300s and the 250s are the same. So I would recommend going to your nearest KTM dearlership and ordering the 410W starter motor. The KTM Part Number for the 410W motor is: 55140001100.
How easy did that starter motor go into the housing? I'm having trouble installing the starter motor on my bike with a new o-ring. The fit is so tight I can't get it in there.
Pretty sure the dealer gave me the wrong part. The new o-ring is about twice the size of the one that was on the bike. Granted I bought the bike used but I doubt the o-ring had been swapped, I'm the second owner.
JSTAV LOL they are my horns. They are off the bike at the moment, but will make a come back one day. It's fun blasting people on the trails with big air horns.
Please help me find one of these starter motors. I just bought a 2011 KTM 350 SXF with 29 hours on it. It does start well enough... for now... but I really wanted to pick up one of these especially considering it's got the big bore kit. Every single one the motors I see does not specify the 410W. Is this wattage?
@@SampsonGG Hey, I have got same KTM as you and also thinking about upgrading to this 410W starter. Have you bought it and did it fit well in 2011 KTM SXF 350?
@@jakubkowalski8865 I haven't had any issues with my starter yet, I just wanted to at least make sure I knew which one was the correct one for when that time did come. If you're having starting issues consider scrutinizing your battery first. I've upgraded to the new gel type batteries and the performance out of them is insane. Had the bike 3 years, have left the battery in it during the last 3 winters (-35C), parked in a non-heated or insulated garage. Every spring it fires up first try, no battery tender, nothing. Have also had no starter issues while riding.
@@SampsonGG Thanks for your answer! I've replaced the battery first thing though! Not for the gel type one but for the lithium ion battery. It's already better. Although, same as you :-) I am wondering if this particular starter with 410watt will be good for this particular motorcycle, if time for replacement will come. It's very hard to find it on the web.
Hi, you could just repair the old one, the power of starter motor is not that important, the problem is that brushes get bad, and it cant transfer the power to the rotating part, new brushes are 15$
Damn! I have a 2016 with under ten hours on it and it will never start cold. First or second kick every time, but never works with starter. After it is warmed up it starts every time with starter but not if it’s cold.
Before you rush out and buy a new starter make sure your bendix is OK, symptom can be the same; slow crank and can't get over compression. ua-cam.com/video/Zwb5oC3_uKY/v-deo.html if you want to see the fun I had getting mine to work!
RIPPERTON We've done this on quads for faster starting harescrambles. But on those motors, the starter gears were always meshed. A one-way gear was used 'disable' the starter once cranked. With the bendix on the KTM, I'm not sure how well that would work with 24v. Seems like to me, throwing the bendix gear onto the flywheel gear with that much force would shear some teeth, since they are not always meshed.
I am not sure if this is a negative comment about myself or my video. If it is, I apologise. Thank you for your support in watching my video anyway and making the effort to comment.
Can it start in gear? If i have to find N i might aswell kick it. 🤔

how can you tell if you have the 410 watt motor, my bike is a 2013 300xc, I am working through the dreaded, click then nothing...

It could possibly be that, or it could possibly be an issue with the bushings and bendix.
Do you have lithium battery? They have to be warm to start
I have the same problem on my 525
Y ktm don't build are 4 brushes starter
Instead 2
My son little 200 Suzuki used 4 brushes on the starter
This update you're using has 4 brushes or they still using 2 ?
I really don't know mate. I didn't open the starter up to see how many brushes it uses...
Does the motor still hold up?
Hey mate. That starter motor lasted probably five or more years of absolute cold start abuse. So yeah, it's well worth going a genuine one.

On the next JoeJoe show, Joe will teach us how to set fire to your yard! :) A dual sport or super moto is a must living out in the country!
NicheRiding hahaha I don't want to teach anyone else how to do that!
JoeJoe Moto epic pro status though!

It was a bit tight with the new O-Ring, but adding some grease to it should really help out. Maybe a few taps with rubber mallet after that?
Pretty sure the dealer gave me the wrong part. The new o-ring is about twice the size of the one that was on the bike. Granted I bought the bike used but I doubt the o-ring had been swapped, I'm the second owner.
Oh bugger mate! Sounds like it might be the wrong part them hey if it is twice the thickness!
question why the upside down headphones on the bars ?

Hey mate, KTM doesn't state that it is the 410W motor. But as long as you use this part number, it will be the newer 410W version: 55140001100

Hey mate. Yeah, I'd put in new brushes and stuff into the old one and it lasts for a while, but nowhere near as good as the upgraded starter.

Hmmmm. Not sure why that is.... maybe yours has a heap of compression because it's a lot newer possibly.
JoeJoe Moto Never thought of that. I guess time will tell, really wish it would warm up so I could ride it!
Good video man!! I have the exact same problem with my 300! So when I get around to it will defiantly be referring to this video for help:) thanks !

Success!!!

+Dale Wells Well done mate. Great video. Loved your guide process too to diagnose.
JoeJoe Moto I had exactly the same sound, that gu gu when I want to turn bike on. And we change the brushes and after that it start instant ;)
Yeah, I had already done the brushes in my old starter motor. It went well and lasted probably about a year.
If that doesnt work try this.
