The guy said that crime in Ashaiman is down because people are busy trying to make money. Which is a great point. There were less opportunities for the youngsters. If you want to minimize crime, increase the opportunities for that community to thrive some.
But, those that's committing the crimes are the ones that's making things bad for those looking to make money. If criminals want an opportunity, they must go to church, pray, go to school, learn, and be willing not to commit crimes.
I was born in Tema and never stepped there once. Ashaiman is a satellite town of the port city Tema, it became a town for labourers, undesirables and the less well off who couldn’t afford regular rents in the built and organised city of Tema. Ashaiman is under the Tema Paramountcy . ( Tema New Town ) These places tell a tale of the missed opportunities, the lost generations, hundreds of otherwise smart Ghanaians who fell through the cracks for being holed in these ghettos around the nation . Can you see how poorly Ghana had been governed? This couldn’t have happened under Dr Nkrumah’s watch, l wasn’t born or raised under his tenure , but the more l learn about the man the more l get drawn to him and l am a dry fiscal conservative!
Ashaiman has the opportunity now to turn it's story around, in fact it's already happening, but the local authorities should fast track it if they're serious people. The place should be properly zoned/planned out, roads should be dualized, high rises should be built to accommodate more people, about 5/6 big multistorey indoor markets should be created to accommodate traders who come from all over Ghana/West Africa to trade in Ashaiman, street lights, CCTV cameras, all houses should be encouraged to have toilets etc etc With Ashaiman's teeming population and it's proximity to Tema, it's location on the busy Nigeria-Cote dIvoire route, it needs VISIONARY leaders to turn it into a proper modern city
I lived in this town 1996/97,,old Tulaku just few meters from Sakasaka Park. Terrible those days. You can't use the underpass between Ashaiman and Tema after 8pm alone.
I have a feeling that, very soon, Ashiaman will be the next target for chiefs to start cutting up and selling like kelewele..u watch! Ashiaman is part of Tema, and I'm surprised these thieving disgraceful chiefs and so called leaders havent ventured Ashiaman yet, for so called new developments and pushing out the original settlers like this young man's family and all. I had the same impression when I visited Antigua and Jamaica. The market setting were the same. It can be traced to slavery. The people forced put of African brought some of their culture. I even saw some men playing aware. Peter Tosh was right, " no matter where you come from, as long as you are Black you are African". ###forced out###

Way safer! I live in NY and Ashiaman has nothing on U.S. crime areas. The so called criminals there can never stand against U.S. ghetto crimes! No high drug dealing, definitely no shootings(guns), no repeat frequent flyer prison visits, definitely nothing called gangs with gang wars! These are jobless youth with no prospects because no jobs opened in this new town. Just families that moved there and markets...really, no opportunities for the youth at all, and with all the schools they have there, no formal education, becos no motivation and empowerment from the parents either. Most of the families that settled and created this town are labourers that worked at the nearby Tema shipping port, and at the end of work day had a hard time travelling back so far away into Accra where they came from or even further. Anyway, like any place in the world, it's just that, because it started with families, having more kids, then gradually it was just homes with a whole lot of youth with nothing to do, thus, the devil is always busy for idle hands. Did u realize how hard it was for that group to say what they did for a living when she asked them? No companies there to employ them, so.....

For over 20 years now, I left Ashaiman, nothing has changed. The same dirty, slummy areas. Sadly this two vote for particular political party, NDC and nothing has been done for them. So sad. We moved from Community 5 to live in ASHAIMAN new town for few years and we came back to Community 5. Crime was really high then. I remember being rubbed openly at knife point. Luckily, I didn't have anything serious on me and did not struggle with them, I would have been killed by now. It used to be very dangerous place but for 20 years now, I expect things to have changed.

When you asked your guide about the Ga names I’m not sure you got a complete answer. All of Greater Accra is Ga land. Same way other regions of Ghana are associated with various groups. The lands were sold by the various kings and chiefs. Therefore it does not mean that Gas are the predominant group on Ashaiman. In fact they are not by any means.

Derrick could be a designated tour guide if only he can be guided and helped to know that he ciuld make a living out of that! If Ashaiman could be marketed by these young men, on UA-cam etc. To invite people to come and see their town with a mixture of ethnicities and remind people that, the world famous Tema harbour is right nearby, and it's that harbour that created the Ashiaman town! That's an idea..and I just thought of it as I started typing, why cant these young men think of that! Most of the youth are being very creative and selling their little villages, towns, cities, regions for that matter. They dont have any govt body in Ghana that's going to do that for them, so if they want the place to change, businesses to come in, they should do it themselves!

I use to sell for my mom in Ashiaman. Eiiish memories, Zongo laka, Turuku etc, years back most of the manufacturing companies in Tema had a decent number of their work force commute from Ashiaman.

The MCE of Ashaiman if he were visionary, would consult private investors to have them build many multistorey indoor markets for his people (markets bring tremendous employment), replan Ashaiman, remove the shanty structures, build high rises to house people/businesses/students, dualize their roads etc etc. It's sad
When you asked your guide about the Ga names I’m not sure you got a complete answer. All of Greater Accra is Ga land. Same way other regions of Ghana are associated with various groups. The lands were sold by the various kings and chiefs. Therefore it does not mean that Gas are the predominant group on Ashaiman. In fact they are not by any means.

You had a very beautiful young gentleman as a guide, he could certainly be a tour guide for that region. I see every place has different levels of house types (slum and otherwise) but the blessing is, is there growth? Babies, fruit, vegetation,...etc all blessings and growth ome adom aye!

Derrick could be a designated tour guide if only he can be guided and helped to know that he ciuld make a living out of that! If Ashaiman could be marketed by these young men, on UA-cam etc. To invite people to come and see their town with a mixture of ethnicities and remind people that, the world famous Tema harbour is right nearby, and it's that harbour that created the Ashiaman town! That's an idea..and I just thought of it as I started typing, why cant these young men think of that! Most of the youth are being very creative and selling their little villages, towns, cities, regions for that matter. They dont have any govt body in Ghana that's going to do that for them, so if they want the place to change, businesses to come in, they should do it themselves!

Tema people are afraid to stay in Ashaiman but they go to their Ashaiman market to buy food stuffs and the rest,because Tema living de3 high cost of living
I use to sell for my mom in Ashiaman. Eiiish memories, Zongo laka, Turuku etc, years back most of the manufacturing companies in Tema had a decent number of their work force commute from Ashiaman.
