You can't conclude that ABRSM has a higher standard for pass and merit based on the pass mark. If they are more lenient in their grading then it could have a higher pass mark and still be easier to pass. It would just be that it is much harder to gain a distinction with Trinity. However, we do know that both provide the exact same UCAS points at grade 6-8 which means that independently they have been assessed to be of the same standard!
In real life, all that matters is if you can play something or not Exams are a great way to have a short term goal to learn things that you would otherwise find boring
We wish you all the best with your music journey regardless of the exam board you have chosen 🥰 It is comment like yours gives us motivation to continue making videos for educational purpose!
digital performance grade in Abrsm has no requirement of technical exercises, but only the pieces. You should also have shown the fee differences and convenience of website/ customer support/ ease of use of the whole process, guidelines.

Hello and thanks for this. If I choose to do the Piano course, could you tell me which board offers more theory… Trinity or ABRSM. I am very keen to learn piano, but in the long term I am also planning to compose music. Thanks in advance.
Hi, thanks for your comment! One thing to note is that ABRSM and Trinity are examination board that provides evaluation on how well you master the musical instruments of your choice. They are not a pedagogy course or method. We plan to make a video to explain this further. Furthermore, both ABRSM & Trinity offers music theory as a separate subject for exam (not combined with piano or any other instruments). It is common that music students take music theory lesson & exams on top of their chosen instruments. So in short, we cannot say which board offers more music theory - it is a subject on its own. In fact, grade 1-5 music theory is considered fundamental, and not too different across different boards or system. There are also plenty of resources out there to learn music theory, the only difference is examination board selects a certain range of topics and expose to students at different levels as a progressive step, to avoid information overload. It also depends which region you're from. In Malaysia where we are based, it is easier to obtain music theory workbooks and materials based on ABRSM syllabus & exam. Hence, it's more popular to take ABRSM music theory in Malaysia due to that reason. Please reply below if you have further questions, we will try our best to assist! Cheers!
@@gramophonemusicstudio5019 So I am guessing there isn’t too much theory embedded into the the Piano course itself, or what’s there is very basic. Thanks for the reply!
@@accentontheoff actually, the course is designed by your teacher or any method that they choose. ABRSM or Trinity only designs the evaluation system (exam), and the syllabus that determines if the student qualifies for certain level. The piano exam does not include theory assessment, it is available as a separate entity. In the lesson, exam can be a goal to work on, however the contents of lesson is very much determined by teacher. For myself, I like to incorporate as much of theory in the piano lesson as it is easier to understand how the theory part is executed in an actual piece of music.
Thanks for your input. This information is covered in our guide to Trinity exam video, which we recommend watching prior to this comparison video ua-cam.com/video/ODoIpndfkbA/v-deo.html Grade-specific information was not included in this comparison video, as well as instrument-specific information. For instance, number of pieces & supporting tests are different for vocal exam. We could only cover most of the general information that students & parents are concerned of in this video. The point we tried to convey in the video was that Trinity provide options for supporting test (although sight reading is mandatory for grade 6-8, another test is at candidate's choice between aural OR improvisation) whereas in ABRSM exam, the type of supporting tests are fixed and candidate is not given options. Cheers.
Thank you for your kind words! We try to be neutral when making this video because we have students who do ABRSM and Trinity exams. Ultimately, they both are able to help students to progress and provide evaluation in different aspects.
@@thememaster7 Certainly. However there is not a single music examination board that can cover ALL of the aspects. We always encourage our students to explore information and knowledge outside of the syllabus, in order to see the bigger picture. But that cannot be achieved by merely following a single syllabus. @@gramophonemusicstudio5019 All the more reason to adhere to classical music to give the student as many aspects as you can. Having them play music with fewer aspects makes no sense. @@thememaster7 I don't think we are at the same page on the definition of "aspects". Hi one important question.. Will I eligible to get music jobs in other Countries like Canada or Australia or any other Countries, if I clear grade 8 exam trinity guitar.
Hi firstly I cannot provide a firm answer as I personally don’t work in those countries, nor do I know anyone working there. It is best to check the job qualifications provided by the respective company. However from my understanding, Canada mainly uses RCM exam board and for Australia it’s AMEB. And perhaps to work as an expat usually a music degree and above is required. Again, you will have to check the job requirement and ask the person in charge. Wishing you best of luck.
Hi, Rockschool London (RSL) is known for providing exam for contemporary musical instruments such as electric guitar, drum kit, keyboard etc. They also launched exams for classical instruments in recent years. Since ABRSM is almost exclusively for classical instruments, it will not be a fair comparison for ABRSM vs Rockschool. Trinity does offer Pop & Rock which is similar to Rockschool syllabus. Since RSL classical exam is relatively new compared to ABRSM & Trinity, it is less popular in Malaysia where we are based. Of course, if our viewers are interested in Rockschool London RSL exams, we will be happy to create a video on this subject! 😊 pls like this comment if you do!
