4 Keys to Patient Navigation. Learn from the experience of one of the original patient navigation companies: Compass Professional Health Services.

Here are 4 Keys to Patient Navigation:
1) Navigation is a 'Thing' - Patient Navigation is widely used in ACOs, Onsite Clinics, Medicare Advantage Plans, Hospital Systems, Employer-Sponsored Plans and Medicaid.
2) Patient Navigation gave us a Cross-Sectional view across the country and across medical specialties.
3) The two MOST IMPORTANT factors for a patient when searching for a doctor are TIME (i.e. how soon they can get an appointment) and LOCATION (i.e. is the office easy to get to). Not Price. Not Quality.
4) Women Run the Healthcare of a Household. Greater than 80% of healthcare decisions of a household are made by women. Accordingly, patient navigation communication must be geared toward women.

I recently began my search in AL for a new PCP. When I needed specialty/sub- specialty care, I was steered to a medical campus 2 hours from my home. The area is known to have extremely heavy traffic all day, every day! I have not been able to get a clear understanding of why all the specialists are leaving a particular hospital, which is a mere 3 blocks from my front door! I would not have given this change a second thought while in my 20s. Now, in my 60s, I appreciate having my medical care providers within a 1 hour drive of my residence. I commend you for taking the time to thoroughly research your topics. Thank you for presenting the topics in a manner that is easy to comprehend. No fancy slides or colorful graphs.
