@@Vicente75480 Yep
the mistaken toxic belief that admitting to being wrong is a sign of weakness.
There's two motivators.
The first one is that humans tend to be figuratively allergic to being wrong. When it comes to something that's important to you admitting you messed up takes a lot of effort. That's the internal motivation.
The second one is that many people will see you as weak and unreliable if you admit to being wrong. An example of this is one I sometimes encounter amongst anti-intellectual people, claiming that science isn't so great if scientists frequently have to admit to having been wrong about something. That's the external motivation.
Of course there's other stuff but that's the two I think are the most important.
@@filipwolffs Well said. I think it's important to own up to your mistakes, but it's also important to acknowledge that some people want to do the same, but just don't have the courage to admit to their mistakes (at least not publicly). At the same time though, as was said above, there are also those who enjoy being right so much that they refuse to admit when they're wrong.
Reasons for not taking responsibility for your actions vary person to person I suppose.

It's natural for people to fear admitting defeat and that's exactly why we praise those like him who acknowledge their own faults.
And one of the reasons why people fear that humble act is because they fear how others will act. Some people will exploit your smallest mistakes and undermine you just because you admitted your in incorrectness. Thus many prefer to hide their mistakes : mistakes makes you lose authority and credibility. Saying a wrong statement and making it public is a big bad fault as trying to correct yourself is a red flag for critics that you are not good at what your doing.
And sometimes, some mistakes would actually cause a severe loss of respect, credibility, lifestyle because of repercussions, and plenty of other side effects. While you should always seek to be honest in your mistakes and disclose your mistakes when appropriate, some mistakes are beyond the pale and cannot be excused. Faced with that, many choose to hide the mistakes because everything has piled up so much that whatever they did wouldn’t be able to handle it.
For example, say another UA-camr also is an educational UA-camr, similar to Primer and 3blue1brown. They suddenly become viral with a video, a video they only realized presented bad information long after it was posted. That person is known to hate misinformation, and promotes checking work and critical thinking. That person runs many projects. Their entire fanbase as it stood was because of that video, and they will likely have faults in other videos. To some people, that is good enough to not be an educational UA-camr, and their analysis would be correct. That UA-camr realizes that mistake. That person fears that people knowing he spread misinformation, so they hide that fact for they fear the disruption and repercussions.

Imagine where society would be if politicians would question themselves like this.
Great Video!
It's not the politicians' job to question themselves. They're *supposed to* serve at the pleasure of their constituents. If a politician you voted for acts up, it's *your job* to correct them. By voting them out, if necessary.
It's *our* job to question ourselves. Even our choice of political beliefs. And it's important to regularly take a good hard look at the opinions of people you don't agree with. You might just find out you were wrong.
Or you may find out you were *horribly, horribly right.*
@@ClokworkGremlin so, they get their whole term to be wrong, and we can only vote them out at the end? I agree it's up to us to _do_ that, and disagree with your dismissal of the idea that they should hold themselves to a higher standard. We can and should aim for both.
The problem with politicians is the voters. How many people would actually vote for someone who admits to being wrong. The answer is surprisingly few.
No, politicians can’t question themselves, they can only question if there doing what there voters wanted. If they question themselves, they would simply look incompetent, and indecisive. They only seem they way they do because of this need to be assertive. What I think your talking about is, if only we had less corrupt politicians that just don’t care if there wrong, because they have nothing to be afraid and can do whatever they want. But you can’t fix those people with critical thinking, simply because they don’t actually care that there wrong, as long as they get what they want.
A politician that does that would be out competed by hawkish political opponents. There could be a blob based educational video on here somewhere.

We need more people like this in the world. People that aren’t afraid to admit they were wrong and take responsibility for it.
Keep in mind buddy that they may be some who wish to admit defeat or just a mistake, but in some places the smallest mistakes can be used against you. Politics is the biggest example of this! Have you seen a politician admit they failed to a project or their mandate? No! Why? Because one mistake is enough for other to exploit them and make their career miserable, this is why they hide their mistakes for which the people suffer and when they admit them, 90% is when they cannot be used against them anymore. If you or me would become politicians, we would surely make mistakes as people do, but if we publicly admit our faults, there is a good chance that the opposition will exploit our only small made mistakes and dishonour our career.
Same goes for day to day people, some acknowledge they did a mistake as everyone does sometimes, but they fear the repercussions others can make and thus decide is better to move on and forget a mistake rather than admit it humbly like he did.
@@dastanjan320 That's why it's important to publicly value *good* apologies and encourage people around us to stand in for their mistakes by a) being appreciative for apologies and b) being a role model by standing in for your own mistakes, even little ones.
On a greater scale it would benefit us all to implement an open "error culture" that encourages positive discussion on the basis of errors on every level of society - in schools, companies, sports clubs, families, local politics etc. There are measures and publicly available concepts that can be used in every organization.

Lovejoy's (2012) "Transformations of Slavery: A History of Slavery in Africa." and others, such as a documentary from german- french TV- channel "Arte", to legitimate their invasive politics in africa (which of course were in reality mostly economicaly driven) colonialists insisted on a humanitarian cause. The whole "civilise the oh-so-poor savages" racists' argument. One of the main causes of humanitarianism was abolotionism at that time (speaking 2nd half of the 19th century). In fact the europeans, not only colonial powers but also non- colonising nations like Austria- Hungary, had been patrolling the atlantic to catch slave traders, both european/american and barbary pirates, since around 1800. The colonial powers were capable of reducing 'obvious' slavery, but never suceeded to eradicate it completely. Also they forced labour on rebellious and otherwise 'criminal'- deemed africans which can be considered a form of slavery itself.
@@valentinmitterbauer4196 Thanks for the info.
I am south american. I just know about spanish colonization, I am not well educated about african slavery . For sure I am going to read more about it after this
@@everab1209 You're welcome. The main difference between american colonisation and african colonisation was the time. In 1500 to 1700 slavery was acceptable and therefore the spanish and portuguese did what they did in south and central america. In 1800 the colonisers needed a new excusion for exploiting foreign societies and therefore came up with raciology and the "we need to save and civilise" attitude.
Although their methods were the same. I am from austria (former austria- hungary), which didn't colonise (not because we were morally superior, we just didn't make it on time and the other superpowers already took everything) so in history in school we learn about the german colonies in africa, therefore i got to know about the differences between african and american colonialism. The germans committed their first genocide in Namibia, where they eradicated the revolting Herero tribe, killing 80% of them, all supposedly in the name of progress, humanitarianism and abolutionism. The real reason of course was money and the prestige of haveing colonial land.

It's the first video I watch from this channel and I imediately subscribed, not even knowing exactly what the videos are talking about.
This guy is precious like water in the desert.
Now I'm gonna explore the contents of the channel. I'm 'overconfident' I'm not goin' to regret for my impulsive decision.
:)
Thanks for saying so. Much respect for anyone trying hard to do their best, finding a flaw, admitting and correcting it.
We've long joked about plugging merch on an apology video but now that it's happened I'm surprisingly fine with it. Perhaps it speaks to the quality of the correction!
How to not be ignorant tutorial:
We need more people to think like this
I didn't even watch the original video, but this was an unexpected breath of fresh air. Not many break down this part of the learning process (mistakes). Especially not so eloquently/introspectively.
I saw a couple of your videos but this one made me subscribe. Thank you for caring more about facts than about your ego and emotions. Thank you!
It's so annoying when the smartest people on youtube also turn out to be incredibly handsome. It's just greedy... stop it.
I agree. It's the reason I never started making videos.
fk winners from the DNA lottery! Like the channel 3Blue1Brown....
As I was reading, “It’s so annoying when the smartest people....” I already started to think that this would be another hate comment with a good argument.... but then I read the rest and it turned out to be a hilarious nonsense. Glad it was.
So unfair!

Maybe for future videos if he gets impatient with correspondence from academics he should send them this video so they know that if they don't talk to him he'll misinform millions of people about their field!
Holy shit, this kind of leverage can move the world.
I've made the exact same set of mistakes a lot when I was learning actively, too. Now, I only avoid them because I'm too busy to learn with active participation like back then. Thank you so much for this video!
Your awesome for doing this I know quite a few channels that make very similar mistakes but never post retractions. They merely double down and make those same bad arguments over and over again thinking they have won some kind of battle even when they have been thoroughly debunked.
This took a level of grace and intellectual honesty that is unfortunately rare today, and for it I applaud you.
I'm so confused. I thought Hamiltons rule was to fight for what you believe and to not throw away your shot.
Lmfao this is what i thought when i saw the title
*deep breath* HOW DOES A BASTARD?
I just got this recommended and I don't know what he is talking about. Please explain!
@@rastislavvassilev8157 It's an evolutionary principle which basically favors altruism. Specifically it says altruistic genes are favored if the cost is worth the increase in reproductive selection of the gene- not necessarily the individual. I remembered him having a video of different game theory types being passed around, but I don't remember him saying altruism was wrong.
@@danielmorton9956 Thank you! He seems like a good You Tuber. I subbed.
When a UA-cam creator is willing to very publicly and clearly admit and correct their mistakes like this, I know I found one of the good ones.
lol, I knew from his very first video
@@ekkehard8 Honestly, you'd be surprised. A UA-camr I had great respect for recently made a horrible decision that goes against everything they stood for, and all of his positive actions (not just words) in the past. It hurt because I really thought he had integrity, but his apology said otherwise. I'm glad I've been following this channel and wish it well.
YOU HAVE A FACE!?!?!
Also, this is literally the best apology video of all time. All apologies should be modeled after this. Including promotion of your cute blob plushies.
Ok, this video just increased my appreciation of your videos so much. I loved how you have been able to summarize and properly illustrate concepts of evolutionary biology that tend to be so abstract and difficult to understand at the beginning. But the process of taking self-responsibility for your mistakes and go through the process of properly amend them, while explaining the process that drove such mistakes, just shows a very valuable pillar of science.
When he said the eyes were a little too far apart I thought he might say it was a "prey" blob.
I love how honest this dude is, we are all humans and we all make mistakes, keep up the amazing work
I LOVE videos like this! Learning to confront our biases. Owning up to our mistakes. I truly believe that's what makes us better human beings. Thank you.
You are the type of content creator that I appreciated. Thank you.
"is a lie is a lie" cancel each other out and now we just have Hamilton's rule
Exactly, thats what he meant!
But is it a double negative (lie/lie) or double positive (_____ is/_____ is)? 🤔
@@guyinthecorner0 It is a double negative.
Noooooo! "Is a lie is a lie" may also just mean we don't _know_ Hamilton's rule is a lie which means we may need more information to come to a conclusion. But yes, in this case Hamilton's rule is true :)
"Hamilton's rule is a lie" is a lie
You just explained the Internet in 5 simple steps
Mad respect, sincerity and owning up to mistakes. Excited to see what content you come out next Primer, cheers!
I didn't even see this as an apology video - I saw this as a correction to ensure proper education.
Hey, a "CGP Grey was WRONG"-style video. I love these, you should own (and correct if possible) you mistakes.
Have you seen Tom Scott's mistake video?
@@jonahnichols2158 Which one do mean?

@@JustThingKing Muhammad is right, it's the "Why you can't trust me" video about Coober Pedy
I was just thinking about that video just then!
